How could someone so pure want filth like him?
Damon Comb was no stranger to pain, hunger, loneliness, and abandonment. Being given a family that would die for one another didn’t erase six years of torture. It didn’t take away the nightmares. She did. She was everything someone like him should never be allowed. She was goodness and strength and she made him human.
How could someone so broken complete her?
Willa McClain had it all, a family that adored each other, the love of an entire town and a future she worked her butt off to get. But all she wanted was the boy with the sad blue eyes and the crooked smile. He was her best friend, her protector and the only one who really understood her.
How could a love like theirs be extinguished?
But nothing ever lasted forever. Damon knew better than anyone how quickly the tides could change. Can he keep his past at bay before it consumes the only light in his dark world? Can he finally tell Willa the truth, or will his fears tear them apart forever?
How could love so strong ever fail?

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

As a reader whose favorite part of romance novels is the hero, I found Damon the quintessential hero as he waited years to claim the one woman he knew to be his.  Though he came from a childhood of abuse and unfathomable neglect he rose above all that to become a man you can count on for his loyalty and honesty.  He may have once been a bully as a child in acting out against the pain his father heaped on him, but meeting Willa brought out all his protective instincts as they became forever inseparable.  While everyone else thought they were dating he was too scared to admit his feelings for fear their closeness would end if she didn't feel the same.  When outside forces force him to admit the truth though their close friendship will never be the same.  Their newfound connection becomes even more complicated when his past comes back to haunt him with a darkness that might finally overpower him.  Damon's a sweet character very different from the typical romance hero in that he's a virgin.  It was endearing seeing him and Willa grow closer through charmingly awkward sexual interludes at the start of their newly-defined relationship.  Readers get a glimpse into what he suffered as a child and it's heartbreaking, but seeing how much he's overcome makes him even more admirable.

While I adored the hero, I had some issues with Willa.  As a 23 year old woman she tended to act more like a child.  She was fearful of everything, emotionally broke when confronted with negativity, while secrets and surprises left her hyperventilating.  I kept expecting there to be a reason in her past for this but I didn't see that here.  Everyone knew she had these problems but instead of getting her help they fed into it.  While she was full of child-like naïveté though, she was a truly kindhearted person whose cheery outlook Damon needed to overcome the darkness of his childhood.  Willa loved Damon unconditionally and once she committed to him it was completely, which made their new relationship move very quickly and in a very mature direction.

Along with a memorable main couple there was a large cast of secondary characters to interfere in Damon and Willa's relationship, which they often did with little regard to their feelings.  There were numerous familial interactions to show the importance of family, especially to Damon who had only his vile father as a role model.  His wonder and love for all the chaos made me ache for him all the more and happy for the peace and contentment that Willa brought him despite my feelings for her.  His interactions with his male friends also added a bit of humor to a sweet story with very intense feelings at times.  The story may have started out slow but a face from Damon's past makes for a fast-paced conclusion full of pulse-pounding fear.  While this return felt a bit jarring, it did add a bit of much-needed excitement to a story that didn't have much conflict.  While this story can be read on its own the familial connections and long-simmering love between two connected souls will be more richly rewarding reading the other books in The Baby Saga first.  Fans of sweet yet sensual romances will find themselves charmed by this tale and its drool-worthy hero and will soon want to take a trip to Willow Creek!

My rating for this is a C+
