Movie Review: Fright Night

A sexy, suspenseful, fast-paced remake of the 1985 classic vampire movie.  This time around, Colin Farrell plays new neighbor Jerry, who just happens to be a deadly vampire.  Once teen Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) discovers the truth, he and those he loves are next on Jerry's list.  With the help of a reluctant vampire hunter played by David Tennant, Charley's forced to fight in a world he never believed in before.

This is a well-done remake of an iconic 80's vampire movie.  The action scenes are fast-paced and keep you on the edge of your seat.  Along with heart pounding action comes brilliant moments of humor which are mostly courtesy of vampire hunter Peter Vincent.  Played in the 1985 version by the very entertaining Roddy MacDowall, Tennant delivers a performance that is both hyper and humorous at the same time with some truly laugh-out-loud moments.  He's my favorite part of the movie and after seeing him here people will be left wondering Doctor who?  He inhabits his character so fully that whenever he's on-screen you can't look away.

Colin Farrell is excellent here too playing both brooding and sexy to a tee.  He's truly bloodthirsty at times as well as intelligent and relishes his cruelty.  He's a formidable villain for Charley and his cohorts.  The character of Charley is a typical teen who's a former geek not wanting to get involved in this unbelievable world after getting with the hot girl.  He's smart though and once he discovers the truth he jumps into the mythology fully.  The same is true for his mother (Toni Collette) and girlfriend (Imogen Poots) who are strong-willed women willing to get their hands dirty in a fight.  No shrinking violets here!

This movie owes a lot to the original version but stands very well on its own.  There's a brilliant cameo in this update from one of the stars of the 1985 version that had all of us cheering when we saw him come on the scene.  But this version certainly has memorable portrayals of its own, most notably Tennant with his frenetic yet humorous characterization.  I'd love to see more of his entertaining vampire hunting in the future as a matter-of-fact.  Farrell is sexy and scary and barrels through this movie with bloodthirsty glee.  At 106 minutes the movie immediately gets to the good stuff and keeps the action going steadily from there.  There are no lulls and the end comes before you even realize it.  This is an engrossing movie that I thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish and fans of horror and sci-fi will find themselves equally enthralled by.

My rating for this is an A!

-I may be the shy sister, the less pretty sister, the not as smart sister.  But I still knew what I wanted--what I'd wanted for a very long time--and here, right now, it was within my grasp.  I'd be damned if I wasn't going to take it.

Fashion Monday Madness..............

I hope everyone on the East Coast made it through Irene safely this weekend.  Moments like this make me thankful for my living in a land-locked state where we only have to avoid tornadoes.  My weekend was full of reading.  But of course, when isn't it?  I also finally saw the movie Fright Night which was enjoyable and, which you can read more of, in my movie review on Wednesday.  I'll also be hosting author Reena Jacobs on Thursday along with a giveaway related to her new release.  So be on the lookout for all the excitement coming up this week.  And now for our Monday staple of.....

The Good....

At age 66, Helen Mirren continues to look ravishing in red with her classic hairstyle and tasteful accessories.  All of us wish we looked half as good as she does and I can't help but marvel at her genetics.  She just keeps getting better, and younger-looking, with age.

Anne Hathaway is on top again this week in a classic yet romantic dress.  Lace can sometimes look dated, but the cut of this gives it a funky edge.  She looks flirty and demure all at once.

The Bad....

Katy Perry looks like a craft project gone astray with her macrame skirt and tamely tie-dyed tank.  Add in the cotton candy colored hair and Katy looks virtually unrecognizable.  Which is probably a good thing considering how unkempt she looks.

Kelly Osbourne is going for cutting edge, but ends up looking clown-like in this overly-embellished cocktail dress that completely overwhelms her.  As the newest addition to E!'s Fashion Police you'd think she'd know better.  Be prepared for Joan Rivers' wrath in this mess of a dress!

The Ugly....

With the economy going through a rough patch, singer Cee Lo Green must have heard that the only good investment is gold.  At least I hope that's the explanation for this gaudy outfit.  From head-to-toe he looks like The Oscar Statuette or perhaps MC Hammer was having a garage sale and Cee Lo was able to get this for cheap.

Zoe Saldana has also gone overboard with the gold-lame fabric and embellishments.  With the sheer fabric inclusion I'm not sure if she thinks she's a superhero or a reject from the cast of Barbarella.  Either way, this is what happens when sci-fi goes bad.  Next time, save this for your role on Star Trek.

That concludes another Monday runway show with the Stars.  What's your take on these wardrobe choices?  Malfunctions or masterpieces?  Sound off below and come visit again next week for more fashion fun.

Sci-Fi Invades Real Life With The Third Season of Fringe on DVD

Throughout the summer I've been able to catch up on the most recent season of the tv show Fringe and with the soon-to-be released DVD set you can too.  One of the interesting aspects of season 3 of Fringe is that it's set within two distinctive worlds where one world is affected by the actions that occur in the other.  Something like this happens to each of us bloggers everyday where we try to balance our online persona with who we are in our professional life.  Ways of maintaining a balance are to be straight-forward in how you present yourself.  Remember that anything you put on the internet is there for a lifetime.  Don't be something you're not, be proud of who you are.  In my case, what you see is what you get.  I'm proud of my love of books and sci-fi and proclaim it here for all to see.

Again, to proclaim my love of sci-fi, be sure to pre-order your copy of Fringe: The Complete Third Season on DVD here today: http://bit.ly/o2MYBv !

Review for Playing Dirty by Susan Andersen

Ava Spencer has always thought of herself as the "fat girl" and no matter how much weight she loses, the feelings of inadequacy remain and flare-up occasionally.  She's having one of those flare-ups now courtesy of "Buttface" Cade Gallari, the boy who crushed her heart in high school by accepting a bet to sleep with the "fat girl".  Cade's back in town now to make a documentary using Ava's mansion and hiring Ava to be the production's concierge and hoping to finally make amends.  As Ava learns more about Cade and how he really feels about her, will she finally be able to put the past behind her and embrace the future he's offering her and a love she's always dreamed about?  Or will insecurities keep her alone?  Find out in this sweet and sexy romance full of likable characters, a bit of mystery, and an immensely satisfying conclusion.

This is the third installment in Susan Andersen's Sisterhood Diaries and it's just as entertaining as the previous books.  The series focuses on three long-time friends who have stuck by each other through every hardship with the guiding force of Miss Agnes Wolcott encouraging their dreams and who left her estate to the girls upon her death, along with a mystery surrounding hidden diamonds.  If this is your first time reading the series, have no fear, this is an easily accessible series that draws you into the story without making you feel lost.  Ava, Poppy, and Jane are the greatest of friends and their interactions make you long to be a part of their circle.  They fiercely defend one another and their scenes together are warm and extremely realistic.  The times they're together are some of the most entertaining and satisfying moments in the book.

Ava is a wonderfully admirable character with body issues that sometimes bring her down.  She never wallows in pity though, she acknowledges the issues and moves on.  This is much how her relationship with Cade progresses.  Once he's finally explained why he committed such a vile act towards her in high school, they undertake a steamy connection that hits a bump or two along the way but is resolved in a quick and mature way.  No annoyingly long misunderstandings between these two.  Once she's committed herself to him they're a wonderful sight to see.

Cade is equally as likable.  He's always felt a connection to Ava.  In a world where there was no joy for him, only disappointment, he could always count on her laughter.  But as a young boy, he'd rather give her a spider than a hug.  That could all be forgiven until that one regretful moment when his anger towards his father led him to an act that he's been trying to make amends for ever since.  His constant attempts at forgiveness are admirable and watching the battle of wills between him and Ava makes for some very entertaining scenes.  Cade's sexy and makes Ava feel that way too.  Their sexual encounters are steamy and perfectly spaced throughout the second half of the book.

There's a few secondary characters related to Cade's documentary, but only one stands out.  Cade's production assistant Beks is a goth-dresser with a tell-it-like-it-is attitude who fits in beautifully with Ava and her friends.  And with her staying in town, I don't think we've heard the last of her yet.  I'd definitely love to see her be the focus of her own story and will be first in line if that happens.  What doesn't make much of an impact is the Wolcott diamond mystery and the bad-guy looking for the jewels.  Tony Phillips is a grifter who scams women and that's clearly what he should stick.  Anything dangerously physical ended with him looking like a buffoon and made this aspect of the story weak and unnecessary.

This was an entertaining story with likable characters both strong-willed and sexy with realistic relationships.  These are mature characters put in realistic situations that act in ways that we can all relate to.  Those wanting a memorable contemporary read need look no further than Susan Andersen's latest release.

My rating for this is an A.

*I received this from NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

Follow Friday........

This is the day of the week where we get to know each other better by answering a question devised by our lovely hostesses Parajunkee & Alisoncanread.  We also gain new followers by joining each other's sites via GFC, so please let me know if you're a new follower since I automatically follow back.  And now for this week's question....

Q. In books like the Sookie Stackhouse (True Blood) series the paranormal creature in question "comes out of the closet" and makes itself known to the world. Which mythical creature do you wish would come out of the closet, for real?

A. I'd love mermaids/merman to be acknowledged.  All those reports of Nessie or shark attacks are most likely mer-creatures.  They just need to admit the truth already.

Blog Tour for Lone Wolf by Shelley Munro (Interview & GIVEAWAY)

Before we get to my interview with Shelley Munro and a giveaway for an Amazon gc I want to thank Goddess Fish Promotions for letting me be a part of this tour and Shelley for taking the time to interview with me.  Make sure to read all the way to the end of the post for giveaway info and now, without further ado.  Here's Shelley........

TSP:  Have you always wanted to be a writer and what steps have you taken to get where you are today?

SM:  Yes, I’ve wanted to be a writer since my teens. I had several abortive attempts, but didn’t start seriously until my husband and I returned to New Zealand after an extended overseas trip. What prompted me to take my first steps was the fact I wasn’t getting any younger! I woke one day and decided I was wasting time, and I had to get a move on. I enrolled in a romance writing course at my local university, joined Romance Writers of New Zealand and went from there. It took me six years before I sold my first book, and I’ve worked steadily since then.

TSP:  You've written in many different genres, do you have a favorite? Are there any genres you haven't written in yet that you'd like to try your hand at?

SM:  I like writing a variety of genres, although if I had to pick a favorite it would be paranormal. I enjoy creating new worlds and populating them with magical beings. I write a lot of feline shifters, and Lone Wolf, my new release, features werewolves with the story being set in an alternative world. I also like to write contemporary stories.

Steampunk is something I’d like to attempt when I get a chance. It’s a matter of finding time and completing my current projects.

TSP:  You've done a lot of traveling throughout the world, how does it enhance your writing and where was your favorite spot that you'd love to return to?

SM:  Yes, I was born with itchy feet! Luckily, my husband enjoys travel as much as I do, and we have a lot of fun planning our trips. We’re off to China at the end of August, which I’m looking forward to very much. I’ve wanted to visit China for a long time. I think any type of life experience adds to the richness of an author’s writing. With travel, there’s the obvious introduction to different settings, but visiting other countries also exposes me to new food, mythology and the people. It gives me the springboard to create something a little different.

India is one of my favorite spots. I’ve visited twice and would like to return to Rajasthan one day. It’s such a colorful and vibrant place, and there’s never a dull moment.

TSP:  Living in New Zealand, do you think that changes how you write or influences it in anyway?

SM:  The Internet brings the world together and makes it easy to communicate with agents, publishers, authors and readers. In the past, a writer living in New Zealand might have found it difficult but these days it doesn’t present a problem.

I do tend to use New Zealand as a setting. Many of my books are set in my home country, and I like exposing people to our outdoorsy style of life. I do have to Americanize my vocab so that readers understand what my characters are talking about, but that’s probably the only change I have to make.

TSP:  How has the digital revolution affected the way you write and how you market your books and yourself and do you think these changes are for the good?

SM: The digital revolution hasn’t affected the way I write, although it has provided an outlet for my work. I’ve always been e-published and it suits my style of working. The recent growth in the digital sector, especially in the self-published realm, can only be good. I think it’s past time for the publishing industry to have a shake-up. Both e-publishing and self-publishing gives writers options and the ability to have more control over their work. While I haven’t self-published yet, it’s definitely at the back of my mind and is something I’ll explore in the future.

TSP:  What can you tell us about your new release, Lone Wolf? Is it a stand alone title or the beginning of a series and what happens next for you?

SM:  Lone Wolf is a werewolf story, set in present time USA, but in an alternative world where werewolves hold more power than humans. In my world, werewolves aren’t permitted to shift to wolf form, and they take drugs to stop them from changing. Lone Wolf is a gay romance, and the story takes place mainly in Yellowstone National Park, a place I visited a few years ago and loved. While I didn’t write this story with the intention of writing a series, there are some secondary characters who are starting to yammer in my brain. I’m quite eager to write more stories set in this new world.

I’m currently working on a follow-up story for one of my other Samhain Publishing stories, The Bottom Line, although I’m sure I’ll return to the Lone Wolf world soon.

TSP:  My site is all about your favorite things, so what are some of your favorite things or the things you can't live without?

SM:  I can’t live without my husband and our puppy. My favorite things include my iPod and books. Oh, and chocolate plus a nice glass of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc always goes down well, no matter what the occasion. I’m also partial to a good cup of coffee.

Thank you very much for having me to visit today. I wondered if your readers would answer a question for me—where do you go to learn about your favorite authors and their new releases? The local bookstore, author’s website, publisher website, Facebook, Twitter or somewhere else?

When you fall out of step, that’s when everything falls into place.

R.J. Blake begins a new session tutoring young werewolves in the old ways—before the introduction of the shift-suppressing drugs that allow their kind to live secretly among humans. He expects nothing out of the ordinary. Until sexy, smart, aggravating-as-hell Corey Wilson arrives. Older than the others, son of a powerful Los Angeles pack leader, Corey is an instant temptation he cannot afford.

The last thing Corey wants is three months stuck in the Yellowstone wilderness, followed by the stifling life his father has all mapped out for him. One glimpse of R.J., though, sparks a determination to seduce the older man before he leaves. Yet as R.J. guides him through the sometimes terrifying process of rediscovering his heritage, a deepening respect calls to his artistic soul and fuels a burst of creativity.

When their time comes to an end, Corey senses hesitation behind R.J.’s insistence that theirs was simply a summer fling. Inspiring him to take a leap of faith with consequences neither of them saw coming. A dangerous plot that reaches from the heart of their love to the highest office in the land…

Product Warnings:

This book contains a young werewolf intent on seduction, an older werewolf determined to resist said seduction, werewolf politics and brutality, a little spilled blood, and hot, naked manlove in the great outdoors.

Excerpt:

R.J. struggled to maintain a neutral expression. Corey Wilson wore black—everything from the tight T-shirt to the leather jacket, jeans and biker boots. His long hair hung in lank strands, unnaturally black and harsh against his pale cheeks. Black eyeliner outlined his brown eyes. And…R.J. thought the kid wore mascara. There was no doubt about the black lipstick. The knowing smile on those painted lips finally jerked R.J. back to professional.

It took him a second or two longer to realize Corey returned his scrutiny with equal intensity and to register the interest flaring in the kid’s face.

Sexual curiosity.

R.J. took in Corey’s muscular thighs and broad chest. Not such a kid, despite the air of city softness. Corey Wilson was an adult and his face bore frank awareness of R.J. He offered his hand and R.J. stared, off balance and at a disadvantage. No one—man or woman—ever surveyed him with such blatant lust.

“My father informed me I’d find things different out here, but I’m sure he told me this was the place to learn manners.” Silent laughter trembled in the words, yanking R.J. from his trance. He extended his hand, his callused palm meeting snow-white skin. He grasped the kid’s hand and shook it, tempering his strength.

The firm grip dragged his glance to Corey’s fingers. “You’re wearing nail polish.”

“There’s a law against painted nails?” Corey’s quizzical smile offered a glimpse of startling white teeth.

R.J.’s eyes narrowed. Not only did the kid dress like a Goth, but he bore a smart attitude, which didn’t bode well for the next three months. “Come and help me load your luggage. We’re keeping everyone waiting.”

“Can’t have that.” Corey’s lips curved into a genuine smile, the expression taking him from smart-ass, weird Goth to another beast entirely.

R.J. jolted from his sensual haze. Fuck! Hal was right. This kid spelled trouble and unfortunately he’d scored the job of babysitter for the next three months.

“Here’s my luggage.” Corey indicated a man pushing a trolley laden with bags.

R.J. studied the four matching black bags. Expensive designer luggage. “All of it?”

“Yeah, I wanted to make sure I came prepared for every eventuality.”

R.J. gave a clipped nod, starting to gain an inkling of why Corey Wilson’s family wanted to ship him here for the summer. The kid—man—was trouble waiting to happen. An ache sprang to life at his temples, its nagging presence hovering like a stormy cloud.

“Can you grab two and I’ll take the others?”

Corey waggled his painted nails in front of R.J. “I’d hate to chip my nail polish. Is that our bus? I’ll wait with the others.” He sauntered away without a backward glance, leaving R.J. to tip the porter and load the bags.

Review for Lone Wolf by Shelley Munro

Political intrigue abounds in this sexy read by Shelley Munro that takes place in a world where werewolves have taken their rightful place in society.  Through the use of suppression drugs werewolves permeate every sector of society, including The White House.  The only place they can run wild is at a camp for youth to experience their animal side before going to live amongst humans.  It's here that goth-boy Corey Wilson, the rebellious son of an influential man, meets a man who will forever change his life.  RJ Blake's early life saw him as the sole survivor of a group of werewolves massacred by The Enforcers, men whose sole purpose is to enforce governmental laws.  He's been hesitant to form a commitment before, but once he lays eyes on Corey he can't help himself.  Once they finally connect, an age difference and dangerous men of power will try to stop what they've started.  But for two Alphas, once they've found their mate no one can get in their way.

This is a sexy m/m story that contains intriguing political issues that are just beginning to be addressed in this story and have me hoping for a sequel.  I'm intrigued seeing how werewolves have become an important segment of society and yet have to use suppression drugs to coexist with humans.  Part of the storyline also touches on an Underground Railroad of sorts for those unwilling to take the drugs.  Both of these actions make for an interesting correlation to the treatment of illegal immigrants in today's society and adds an interesting dimension to the story.

The relationship between RJ and Corey is steamy and evolves slowly.  The flirting they engage in is fun and is a nice build-up to them finally coming together.  I enjoyed the changes Corey goes through from the first rebellious glimpse of him in full goth wardrobe to the the confident young man who leaves his judgemental family behind.  His character definitely matured as the story progressed and he found out more about himself.  Even with all of his maturing I still feel a slight disconnect between him and RJ.  RJ is a very serious character dealing with serious issues I don't think he'll ever get over.  He's carefree with Corey and enjoys their fun times, but he still feels like the adult in their relationship while Corey acts like a pouting child occasionally.  I enjoy their relationship but don't feel fully invested because of their emotional inequality.

Another enjoyable aspect of the story are the secondary characters.  The current crop of youngsters at the camp were intriguing and ones I'd like to see more of, especially Teague who is tortured by Corey's father and The Enforcers.  He's very badly hurt and I'm interested to see how he reacts after seeing what the true purpose of The Enforcers is.  The secret pack leader Wilson keeps about Corey and its ramifications are also thought-provoking and will bring about all sorts of new intrigues in any future stories evolving from this one.  Corey's father is despicable but his secrets definitely drive this story.

Lone Wolf is a fast-paced story with a nice mix of action and romance.  With many likable characters as well as cruel villains the reader is kept on the edge of their seat as the story races to its conclusion.  Readers of the paranormal will find much to enjoy in this story while hoping for a continuation of its intriguing points.

My rating for this is a B.

Fashion Monday Madness......

Before we start our fashion chat I want to remind everyone that I have two contests running right now, with a third giveaway going up on Thursday when author Shelley Munro will be here for an interview and giving away an Amazon gc.  So please sign up for all the goodies listed on the upper right-hand side of this page and good luck to all!  This week I found so many fashion blunders that it was difficult to choose who should make my list, but I think I made some good choices.  So here's this week's.....

The Good....

Kristen Bell looks stylish and dramatic in this beautifully patterned mini-dress.  The diagonal pattern works well with her body shape and the bits of sparkle enhance the party feel.  Shoes, bag, and hair are the perfect choices to boot.  Kudos Kristen!

Kate Middleton continues her reign as the Queen of Fashion in this military-inspired half-business half-party dress.  The split skirt is flirty while the top reflects her royalness.  This ensemble was created by her wedding dress designer and they seem to be a match made in Heaven with her looking this good as the result.

The Bad....

Rihanna looks to be trying out for a role in the new Muppet Movie in this over-the-top outfit.  With the pajama-styled pants and feathery top, she looks more ready for bed than the premiere of her new perfume.  Either way, remember, Elmo loves you and would totally love for you to move to Sesame Street if the Muppets won't have you!

Quick, somebody save Lindsay Lohan from the giant Purple People Eater!  Oh wait, that's her purse.  Combined with the doily-inspired dress, Lind's look is definitely dated.  The over-fried hair extensions don't help matters and age her even more to the point of relic.  No wonder she's under house arrest, this look is a fashion crime!

The Ugly....

Newlywed Tara Reid looks to have just rolled out of bed in this nightgown of a dress, or is that nightmare?  From the dirty looking hair to the drapery-inspired fabric, Tara looks nothing like a blushing bride.  Dressing like this should make her blush though....in embarrassment.

Actress Phoebe Price looks like something the cat dragged in in this holier-than-thou candy colored ensemble.  When choosing an outfit you want everything to match, but this goes too far and she ends up looking like a chewed on cat toy with the strategically placed shredded areas and comical coloring.

So there you have it, the fashion parade for this week.  Sound off below letting me know what you think of these outfits and if you'd wear them.  Join me again next week for even more fashion fun and don't forget to sign-up for the giveaways I have listed before time runs out.

Sci-Fi Intrigue With Fringe:The Complete Third Season on DVD

As all of you know I'm a big fan of sci-fi shows and the intriguing concepts and worlds they present.  A show with a particularly intriguing storyline that just gets more exciting each season is Fox's Fringe.  In the most recent season, the main character of FBI agent Olivia and her alternate version switch places-wherein each Olivia becomes trapped in her respective alternate universe.  This part of the storyline creates an interesting discussion...If a version of you existed in an alternate universe, what kind of different decisions would the alternate you make?

In my case, I would do so many things differently.  The main change would be to avoid the farming accident that caused my quadriplegia by listening to my mother when she said to play inside.  I'd also make sure my parents made different decisions that led to bigger problems too.  Basically this would be the chance to have one big do-over which I'm always wishing for!

So if you're in the mood for fast-paced, thought-provoking sci-fi, pre-order your copy of Fringe:The Complete Third Season on DVD right now at http://bit.ly/o2MYBv

A Marriage of Inconvenience by Susanna Fraser

As the poor relation, Lucy Jones and her two younger brothers are at the whim of their rich relatives' generosity.  After being promised financial care by the Arringtons, those relatives renege and Lucy is forced to make her own way for her and her brothers.  Circumstances soon join her to Lord James Selsley, but misunderstandings rear their ugly head and a marriage based on love soon deteriorates.  Will James put aside past hurts to truly make his marriage work or will he throw away the one woman who accepts him totally?

This is an intriguing historical that starts out in a wonderful direction but gets bogged down by petty misunderstandings and truly unlikable characters to end in a predictably unfulfilling end.  At the beginning of the story Lucy is a strong-willed character, dealing with her circumstances with a brave front.  Her family continually reminds her of her lesser status but it doesn't make her bitter.  After years of verbal browbeating for coming into the family from a workhouse with a head full of lice she's still loyal to them no matter how they treat her.

Her first meeting and later interactions with James are entertaining with witty dialogue and a subtle undertone of sexual interest.  James is charming and the kindly way he treats her in comparison to her family makes him even more endearing.  Seeing them grow closer together makes for a very pleasant part of the story and when a stolen kiss forces a marriage between them there's every belief their marriage will be happy considering how wonderfully romantic they are together at the beginning.

However, past truths regarding Sebastian Arrington and his earlier secret engagement to Lucy that he perpetuated to get out of marrying a poor girl he dishonored.  Once his older brother informs him that their family is broke he immediately casts aside Lucy to become married to Anna, James' sister.  Sebastian is a truly despicable character using one woman after another and doesn't get his just rewards until the epilogue and in an unsatisfying way since it's done off page.  I actually dreaded seeing him on the page especially when his mistreatment of Anna causes a rift between Lucy and James.

Between Sebastian's actions and James' anger towards Lucy over keeping the truth about Seb a secret causes the latter half of the story to be extremely disappointing.  Not only does James act completely different than what we've seen all along, there's no reason for his anger towards Lucy.  She's the one decent thing in the whole story and yet he still wants to set her aside for something ridiculously unreasonable.  James became just as unlikable as Seb because of this one act and no amount of forgiveness redeemed him in my eyes.  Anna too became an unrecognizable character because of Seb's unreasonable anger towards her.  She used to be a strong-willed woman at the start of the story and became a shell of her former self groveling for his attention.  With the dramatic change in these two formerly likable characters my enjoyment of the story greatly diminished as well and I was happy to finally reach the last page of the book.

A story that started out strong with moments reminiscent of Julia Quinn came to a resounding thud overburdened with unreasonable actions and unrecognizable characters.  For those who enjoy historicals, this isn't a horrible book but one that started out with great promise and lost itself along the way.  I wish the number of likable characters had outnumbered those that were unlikable and that the few admirable characters hadn't become unrecognizable.  Had those things happened this would have been a more fulfilling read for me, but as it stands I'm left disappointed.

Q.  If you could write yourself a part in a book, what book would it be and what role would you play in that book?

A.  I'd love to be Payne from JR Ward's Lover Unleashed so my paralysis could be cured by a rousing dose of smexin' just like hers was.  Plus, she's a super impressive fighter and I'd love to kick some butt to relieve stress.

Review and GIVEAWAY for Viscount Breckenridge to the Rescue by Stephanie Laurens

Before we get to the good stuff I want to thank Goddess Fish Promotions for letting me be a part of this tour and Ms. Laurens and Avon / Harper Collins Publishers for their very generous giveaway.  So please read the entire post to get to the giveaway information at the end because you don't want to miss out on not one, but two generous prizes.

A young woman looking for a hero finds one in the least likeliest place in Stephanie Laurens' latest release.  As Heather Cynster and her new savior embark on the journey home they come to realize that what they've been searching for all along is right in front of them.  Will they set aside their egos long enough to admit the truth or will they lose out on their perfect mate?  Share the journey in this pleasantly entertaining read.

As the sixteenth book in Stephanie Laurens' Cynster series and the beginning of its own series, the Cynster Sisters, this book has a lot to live up to.  And mostly it succeeds.  Heather Cynster isn't like the other debutantes looking for a suitable husband.  She's considered on-the-shelf after refusing numerous marriage proposals so she sets out to find a hero to marry wherever men are, even those places considered less than ladylike.  An unknown man with revenge on his mind hires men to kidnap her and it's this fateful event that introduces her to her hero, Viscount Breckenridge Timothy Danvers, a man she hasn't liked before now.  But he's all she has as her kidnappers carry her further and further away from home.

Heather is an extremely likable heroine, a strong-willed afraid of nothing female comfortable with who she is.  She'd like to find a worthy husband but won't be heartbroken if it doesn't happen.  She has other plans for her spinster years.  She's no shrinking violet when it comes to sexual matters either and she's more than happy to indulge in what Timothy offers.  Their sexual interludes are intense and numerous in the second half of the book and with the looks given during these moments you can sense a very deep connection between them.

Timothy is equally endearing and though he starts out as Heather's nemesis he quickly takes on heroic qualities.  He's an honorable man who wants to do right.  He's been hurt badly by love before and that makes him unable to express his true feelings in words which is what Heather longs for.  Through his actions the reader has no doubt about his feelings of love and is willing Heather to see the same.  Not until a tragic accident does Heather finally see the truth but with the incident being so over-the-top it takes away from the romanticism of the deed.

The book is very slow starting and the first half is a bit tedious.  It's not until Heather and Tim hit the road that they start cementing their connection since their previous encounters were clandestine.  Their sexual interactions start quickly and are reflected in the intensity.

The reasons for Heather's kidnapping are mysterious as is the real identity of the man behind the kidnapping.  This Laird is being forced by his insane mother who holds the future of his lands in her hands to enact revenge against one of the Cynster sisters.  He's a noble man who watched over Heather after her escape and wants no part of revenge.  He's an intriguing character and I'm excited to see more of him in the next book when Eliza becomes the next object of revenge.

This is a very romantic story with very likable characters that starts out very slowly but picks up in intensity to race towards a heart wrenching ending.  Those unfamiliar with Stephanie Laurens' Cynsters will have no trouble becoming engrossed in the story since the focus is on this one couple.  The mystery surrounding the Laird is an intriguing part of the story and will have readers counting down the days until the next installment of this exciting series.  So mark the date on your calendar to once again jump in to the lives of this immensely entertaining family.

My rating for this is a B.

Fashion Monday Madness.......

I hope everyone had a great weekend.  Mine was relaxing in anticipation of my super busy week ahead.  I want to remind everyone of the giveaway I have going on for Wendy Burke's highly emotional short story The One He Chose in digital format that you can sign up for here.  Now get comfy and get ready for.....

The Good....

Anne Hathaway again sparkles on the red carpet in this classically designed cocktail dress.  The light smattering of crystals adds just enough drama to keep the look interesting.  The relaxed hairstyle also adds to the comfortably classic feel of this ensemble.

Kim Kardashian balances classical and modern in this tame-for-her cocktail dress.  Kim manages to restrain herself and her figure to look chic and stylish with the tame bodice and exotically open back.  I wish she would pull of this perfect balancing act more often.

The Bad....

Instead of selling movie tickets by making movies, actress Diane Kruger looks to be selling tickets in this theater-inspired ensemble.  The top half is too manly and severe looking and all the layers give a top heavy appearance compared with the scantily clad bottom half.  The only good thing about this outfit are the shoes which should've been paired with something more light and airy and summery.

Lea Michele looks matronly and over-done in this morbid-looking ill-fitting dress.  The fabric is too heavy with a pattern reminiscent of an upholstered couch.  The flowers and ruffles clash in a battle of accessories where no one's the winner, especially Lea.  And the ultimate sin is the overly-tight hairdo that's the poor man's version of a face lift.  This is definitely not a harmonious dress for the Glee star.

The Ugly....

It's now time for a battle of the superheroes!  First up, Tyra Banks.  Not since Olivia Newton-John in Grease have I seen so much leather in one outfit.  Olivia wore it better though as Tyra ends up looking more like Super Queen Bee rather than saucy bad girl.

Dancer Lacey Schwimmer looks to be Wonder Woman's less well-dressed cousin in this leather ensemble more reminiscent of Christina Aguilera's Dirty phase than anything remotely super.  The hair definitely adds to the Xtina feel.  With this over-the-top outfit I can't imagine she'll find a dance partner anytime soon, unless Super Boy is available.

So there you have it!  The fashion hits and misses.  What's your opinion of this week's selections?  Please sound off below and join me again next week for even more fashion fun.

Review for Rise of the Planet of the Apes

One man's desire to create a cure for Alzheimer's leads to a war between simians and humans in this action-packed thrill-fest with a heart of gold.  This is a loosely based remake that has been updated with great visuals and interesting political overtones and is a movie that will appeal to all.

This is an extremely well-done update to the Charlton Heston classic that expands on the original premise and brings it into the modern world.  Heston's iconic quote is included though and upon hearing it one can't help but applaud.  This update brings in thought-provoking discussions regarding animal testing and by making the simians so human that discussion will definitely get even more heated.

The visuals are amazing!  This is definitely where modern technology is at its most apparent.  The simians are so human-looking.  Their gestures and facial expressions draw you in and that's why you root for them every step of the way.  I actually had to bring out the tissues during certain scenes, I was that emotionally invested!  Caesar (portrayed by Andy Serkis and massive CGI) is an amazing character and had my heart in his hands from the moment his little face peered out from behind the blanket.  I found his acting and the feelings he conveyed using only a look to be superior to some of the human actors.

The good guys in this film are James Franco, Freida Pinto, and John Lithgow and they do well with what they're given, but pale in comparison to Caesar and his fellow simians.  The villains in the film range from a corrupt drug manufacturer, to sadistic zoo keepers, to the police.  They're a bit over-the-top during the film's climactic ending, more animal-like in their disregard for living creatures and again make you root for Caesar and his fellow simians.

This movie definitely has possibilities for sequelization.  An issue that was left hanging involves a mutated virus unleashed in to the human population and its deadly affects.  Since a sequel is almost a given after the opening weekend's box office returns I'm intrigued where things might go and hope the mutated virus' affects will be addressed.  I'll definitely be there on opening night yelling "Hail Caesar" and breathlessly awaiting another glimpse of this amazingly brilliant character!

GIVEAWAY for The One He Chose by Wendy Burke

I recently had the opportunity to read and review this highly emotional short story that made me a bit misty-eyed.  Not many books do that so I knew I had to give away a copy of this emotionally satisfying read to my wonderful followers.  Wendy, being the wonderfully generous person that she is, agreed to donating a copy so please read the rest of this post to learn more about the book and how to win a digital copy.

A year after losing her beloved husband, Grace Wizler learns he left a special surprise for her. A fabulous getaway in the beautiful Canadian Rockies that includes a date with a mystery man arranged through Madame Eve's 1NightStand dating service. She's shocked and intrigued...what was Ben thinking?

Grace's date is charming, handsome and about to find out whether the woman of his dreams will return his affection. He's waited forever, but he's ready to risk it all on a 1NightStand.

“Grace.” The deep voice worked its way into her consciousness.

She sighed in her haziness and clutched the imaginary hand resting on her tummy. Whoever or whatever held her carried a familiar scent, one that elicited trust and caring.

Out on the porch, the mountain air had chilled. Despite the comfort of the presence around her, her body responded with a shiver.

A hand slipped into the lace triangle of her thong, caressing the area between navel and Nirvana.

Definitely not a dream.

She blinked, slowly coming to life. The frightened tone of her inquiry shocked even her “Who are you?”

“Relax.” His lips lovingly met her shoulder. “Ben sent me.”

He didn’t seem to have any malicious intent—well, at least not at the moment. And Madame Eve wouldn’t allow something hurtful to happen.

“What do you…?” The hand cupped her waxed-for-the-occasion pubic area. His callused digits followed a natural path. It’d been so long since someone had touched her in this manner, nearly two years. She didn’t blame Ben for the extended dry spell, only the disease which had dampened his interest and stamina.

“I want you to relax and let me make love to you. That’s what you want, isn’t it?”

So, this is how this Madame Eve stuff works.

With little thought, she relented to her physical loneliness. She closed her eyes and shoved the lace below her hips. The stranger assisted until her legs were completely bare. “Yes, please.”

He was strong, agile, and wonderfully gentle.

A warm, sincere, somewhat familiar voice tickled her ear. “Grace.”

She leaned into him, wanting to sigh in happy relief and cry in terrible sadness. His arms about her, she slowly turned into his embrace. She closed her eyes, waiting for the initial kiss.

Then, it came, gentle yet deep and although he was a stranger, she felt a profound connection, a silent conversation. She raised her hand to touch his cheek in encouragement. Blinking in the darkness, desperately wanting to see her soon-to-be lover, her eyes finally focused and the world came to an abrupt halt.

Review for The One He Chose by Wendy Burke

On the one-year anniversary of her husband's death, Grace Witzler gets a very unexpected gift from beyond the grave.  Wanting his wife to start living again, Ben set up a vacation before his death at a resort known for its erotic couplings.  If that's not shocking enough to Grace, the person Ben sends to share the vacation with her is even more unexpected.  As unexpected as it is, it just may be the best thing for her if she's willing to open her heart again.

This is a short story that is anything but short when it comes to the emotional impact of the storyline.  Add in likable characters and steamy encounters and you have a great addition to the 1 Night Stand series.

Grace is understandably still mourning her husband at the start of the story but is showing some attraction to her neighbor, and long-time friend of her deceased husband, Jake Van Abel.  She appreciates the man-about-house role that he's undertaken and is starting to appreciate his body too.  She's always felt a connection to him but things have never progressed further.

Jake is someone every woman wishes she had in her life.  He's strong, dependable, loyal, and not afraid to show his emotions when warranted.  He too has felt that connection with Grace but out of friendship for Ben he never acted on it.  He's been quietly supportive of Grace for the last year but desperately wants to make his move now and you can't help but root for this true gentlemen.

Once Grace meets her mystery man the emotions aroused go off the charts.  Both individuals have to come to a level of acceptance and a removal of guilt which happens after a lot of tears.  The sexual encounters are steamy and emotionally intense and there's a feeling of soul-deep connection occurring.

This is an intense tearjerker where the power of love is shown at its strongest.  True selfishness amidst upcoming death is the ultimate display of love and you can't help but mourn Ben too for what he's done for his wife.  Have a box of tissues handy when reading and enjoy this thoroughly satisfying story.

This is the day of the week where we get to know each other better by answering a question devised by our lovely hostesses Parajunkee & Alisoncanread.  We also gain new followers by joining each other's sites via GFC, so please let me know if you're a new follower since I automatically follow back.  And now for this week's question....

Q:  How have your reading habits changed since you were a teen?

A:  My habits haven't changed at all.  I've always been a voracious reader.  The only difference now is that I don't have to hide under the blankets with a flashlight when reading late at night.

Review for Captain America: The First Avenger

The onslaught of summertime superhero movies continues with the release of Captain America: The First Avenger and oh, what a wonderful ride it was.  Set in 1942 as America enters the war against Hitler a secret project, named Project Rebirth, is implemented to create the perfect American soldier.  The perfect American soldier comes in the form of sickly and weak Steve Rogers who, after undergoing a dangerous medical procedure, becomes the strong and popular hero Captain America.  He's soon fighting an even bigger evil than Hitler in the form of Red Skull, who underwent an earlier version of Project Rebirth that not only enhanced his strength but also his insanity, and the soldiers of HYDRA.  The action sequences are intense and fast-paced with nicely subtle bits of romance in this rousing cinematic spectacular.

Marvel Studios has done it again!  This is a superhero movie with heart as well as exhilarating action sequences and extremely likable characters.  Chris Evans easily transforms into Captain America while retaining his all-American sweetness.  He goes from a piece of propaganda to a one-man Army to save his friend.  And it had me cheering every step of the way.  I enjoyed the subtle romantic moments he had with Peggy Carter (played by Hayley Atwell) that showed no matter how strong he got women were still a mystery to him.  A particularly suave line he used when asking Peggy about her availability when another man propositioned her went something like this....."So are you two...? Do you...? Fondue?"  How can you not find him endearing?

Since we have a perfect hero it's a necessity to have a worthy enemy and Red Skull (played by Hugo Weaving) fits the bill.  His looks alone are disturbing as he thoroughly enjoys his evil deeds.  He's a madman and it's intriguing seeing how the same secret project can create two radically different men.

The secondary characters of Peggy Carter, Col. Chester Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones), and James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes (Sebastian Stan) stand out and are immensely likable.  Peggy is no shrinking violet, she speaks her mind and fights out on the front lines.  She's truly someone worthy of Captain America.

Along with entertaining characters comes visually stimulating and heart pounding action sequences.  The feel of the 1940's permeates the entire movie and draws you in even further.  From start to finish this movie keeps you entertained and breathless for what happens next.  It's the quintessential summer blockbuster and I can't wait to see the red, white, and blue shield again.  As with other Marvel movies make sure to stay until after the credits roll for extra material to get you ready for next summer's The Avengers movie.

Book Tour for Night Walker by Lisa Kessler (Part 2-Interview)

As promised, here now is my interview with Lisa Kessler about her writing career, her new series, and what she's addicted to.  So without further ado, here's Lisa.......

TSP:  Did you always want to be a writer and how did you get where you are today?

LK:  I've always enjoyed writing, but I never attempted a novel until I met a palm reader in New Orleans who smiled at me and told me I was going to be a famous writer one day... LOL By the end of the trip I wrote the basic plot for Night Walker on cocktail napkins in the New Orleans airport.

TSP:  What genres do you like to write in and are there any genres you haven't written in yet that you'd like to try your hand at?

LK:  I enjoy Paranomal romance, Urban Fantasy, and Horror.  I'm sort of watching Steampunk right now...  I think it might be a fun genre!

TSP:  Your current release is with a fairly new to the scene publisher, Entangled Publishing.  What are the advantages to working with a newbie publisher?

LK:  I think the biggest advantage is that my book isn't just a publishing-slot filler.  Being new, my publisher did everything they could to make Night Walker great and they're counting on the book standing out.

TSP:  What affect has the digital revolution had on your career and the way you market yourself?

LK:  While I was at RomCon, I met a wonderful book blogger from the book reading gals.  She had her iPad with her and she was showing me the different eReader apps.  She checked for my book and ended up buying a copy from the iBooks library.  About 30 seconds later it was in her iPad ready to read!  WOW!  I think digital makes it much easier to reach readers whenever and wherever they decide they want a new book.  We live in amazing times!  LOL

TSP:  What can you tell us about your Night Walker series and where do you see it going?

LK:  My Night Walker series tells the story of vampire-like Night Walkers that descend from the Mayans instead of from Europe.  They can shapeshift into their spirit animal and they're actually alive at night.  Their hearts beat and they breathe.  The series will have three books and a novella.

TSP:  How do the Night Walkers differ from average vampires and do you think the public will ever tire of vampire stories?

LK:  Whoops!  I put that on the last question!  LOL  I don't think vampires will ever fade away.  I think the thought of being able to watch the world change over lifetimes is too intriguing for we mortals. It's always intriguing to see the effect it has on a character.  What price do they pay for their immortality?  How do they stay relevant in a changing world when they never change?  There are endless possibilities for writers and readers alike! :)

TSP:  My blog is all about your favorite things.  So what are your favorite things, the things you can't live without?

LK:  Music and books would top the list! :)  When I'm not listening to music I'm singing it!  Whenever I'm stressed or blue, singing usually buoys my spirits again.  I also love to read and lose myself in another world.  And my other very most favorite thing is Disney!  I have been a rabid Disney fan all my life...  I mostly gravitate toward the villains these days...  I love the Evil Queen from Snow White!  That was a woman with a plan who wasn't afraid to get things done on her own... LOL

Thanks so much for having me on your blog!

****************************
Thanks for being here too Lisa!  I'm a huge fan of musical theater and am always singing too, not sure my neighbors are too happy with that.  Good luck with your new release and for those who haven't read Night Walker yet, purchase a copy of this entertaining read today!
