A Lady's Guide to Proper (Mis)Behavior by Mrs. Prudence Whittaker on Proper Ton Etiquette (with additions by Miss Mary Elizabeth Waters)
"A lady should never fence in mixed company." -Mrs. Prudence
"A lady should always fence with the best opponents she can find, be they men or women." -Mary Elizabeth

He's the scourge of the Season...
Reasons to quit London:
1. It's not the Highlands.
2. It will never be the Highlands.
3. It's full of the bloody English.
When his wild spitfire of a sister makes a scene by drawing a claymore in Hyde Park, Highlander Robert Waters knows something must be done. To forestall the inevitable scandal, he hires widowed Prudence Whittaker to teach his sister how to be a lady--never expecting to find unbridled passion beneath the clever Englishwoman's prim exterior.
Mrs. Whittaker is a fraud. Born Lady Prudence Farthington, daughter of the ruined earl of Lynwood, she's never even been married. In order to make her way in the world, she has to rely on her wits and a web of lies...lies a sexy Highlander is all too close to unraveling.
He swears he will possess her; she vows he will do nothing of the sort. Yet as passions heat, Prudence comes to realize the illicit pleasure that can be had in going toe-to-toe with a Scot.

EXCERPT:

Robert’s eyes gleamed with mischief—and with something else, something darker, and a bit alarming. Pru’s stomach jumped at the sight of that heat, and a delicious shiver coursed through her.
When he spoke again, his voice was thick with the music of his homeland, and with something else. “Well, now, and don’t I love a woman with a backbone."
“I’m sure you do. Now leave this room and go find one."
“Aye,” he said, moving closer to her. She straightened her shoulders, and sniffed. His smile was infectious, and she had to work very hard not to give in and smile back.
“I do love a sniffing woman. A woman who knows her own mind, and isn’t shy about telling the world."
“That is very edifying. I am sure there are many such women outside these four walls. Again, Mr. Waters, I bid you good day."
Robert laughed and shook his head, stepping even closer until he was standing a mere two feet from her.
She took in the warm scent of cedar, and a hint of something else, some spice that was all Robert Waters and little else. She was sure that if he stood so close for much longer, she would lose the ability to speak at all.
“But you see, Mrs. Prudence, that’s the trouble. There are very few women beyond these four walls that speak their minds to a man and damn the consequences."
“Honesty is its own reward.” Her heart thudded so hard that the pulse in her throat leaped. His eyes seemed to follow it, and then move up the line of her jaw, to her cheekbones, to her eyes.
“I wonder if it might reward me,” he said.
He closed the distance between them, and kissed her.
She had been kissed before, of course. She had been a debutante during the Peninsular War, when everyone thought that the young men around them were surely going to die. She had almost been engaged, and her swain had kissed her on the garden steps of her father’s house in the moonlight, so many years ago now that it seemed to have happened to another woman altogether. But this kiss was different, because Robert Waters offered it.
Pru shocked herself by accepting it for what it was—a warm touch in a world that was often very cold indeed.
She found herself pressed against him in the next instant. His hands did not come down on her. He did not touch her waist or her shoulders, but held his hands aloft, as if she kept him at gunpoint. She did not think of what that meant, but simply moved against him, taking in the heat of his body with her own. If only she might close the door and ignore her life and future and simply have him there in that lovely, overly luxurious room.
She felt his tongue on her lips, and she opened her mouth to his coaxing. He tasted of warm honey from breakfast. He tasted of man, and in some strange, indefinable way, of home.
He still had not touched her but to place his lips on hers. He withdrew his tongue, and then his mouth, and then stepped back, so that she was left alone, grasping at nothing.

SAVING GRACE: THE RYAN CHRONICLES - BOOK ONE by J.E. Taylor

EXCERPT:

She smiled and I felt a need stir inside me and it had nothing to do with my heart, or soul, for that matter.
“You really let a demon tie you up?” Dimples appeared in her cheeks and mine bloomed with heat.
I shifted, focusing back on the darkness beyond the glass, suddenly uncomfortable and unable to look at her. I swear my face must be the shade of a bright red kickball. “I wasn’t exactly myself,” I said without looking at her.
She chuckled.
The kind of chuckle that was meant as a turn on and I slid my gaze to her. “You like your men tied up?” I raised an eyebrow. It was her turn to blush and she grinned, shrugging and looking back outside. Before I could explore more of this conversation, she paled and took a step back, dragging me with her.
There must have been a dozen pale creatures slinking across the back yard. I gave her hand that gripped my upper arm a gentle pat and she turned her frightened gaze to me.
“They won’t get through.” My voice held confidence, but deep inside, I was trembling just as much as she was. Damian, Steve, and I had wiped out more than this at the cove, but that was three of us and of course Paradise Cove probably had a lot to do with it.
We both focused on the approaching horde and without much thought, I slung my arm around Valerie’s shoulder and pulled her close. It was time to concentrate on the deadly quality of the wall I put up. I wasn’t sure of how much sizzle to put into it.
“I want to see them burn,” Valerie said, answering my silent contemplation and a chill ran up my spine.
She had every right to hate these creatures as much as demons and I concentrated, glaring at the approaching danger. Saliva ran from their lips and their teeth gleamed in the moonlight. My heart pounded in my chest, sending throbbing vibrations through my skin. The harder my heart beat, the hungrier the approaching vampires looked.
“Just a few more feet,” I muttered, focusing on the entire perimeter of the house because I wasn’t as much of an idiot as they thought. This wasn’t the only line of assault. Still, when they advanced, I took a cautious step backwards, pulling Valerie with me. The power inside me grew and I couldn’t tell whether it was the adrenaline or the power raking across my skin like a hundred finely manicured nails. The sensation grew, moving from the land of pleasure into the world of discomfort and I gritted my teeth.
“Come on, you motherfuckers,” I growled, loud enough for their acute hearing to pick up. I moved Valerie behind me and positioned myself in a fighting stance, waving them in with my leading hand. The results were memorable.
They all launched towards the glass slider and the moment they hit my invisible barrier each vampire burst into a ball of flame. The roar of fire drowned out their screams, but I heard them and the dark part of my soul reveled in it.
Valerie let out a high pitched laugh and I glanced back at her, smiling.
She met my gaze with a measure of awe. “The only one I ever saw do something that impressive was Michael."
Being compared to an archangel was humbling and I glanced outside at the black dust that spun on the wind. “I’m not an angel.
“Oh, I gathered that,” she said and stepped away.
I turned towards her. “What do you mean by that?"
“You’re more recent activities?”
I shoved my hands into my pockets and stared at the floor, shamed by the fact she was privy to my more decadent actions. Instead of apologizing, I lifted my gaze to hers, studying her memories of past events, especially the times after the more traumatic events. Naomi was right about one thing. The girl never freaked out. Ever.
And therein lay the challenge.
I let a grin slowly surface and narrowed my eyes, stepping closer. “So, you want to try out some of those ‘activities’ with me?"
She laughed. The kind of laugh that bruised a man’s ego and when she went into the gale realm, I crossed my arms, my good humor turning sourer by the second.

CREATURE OF HABIT by Angel Lawson

EXCERPT:

"I know you have a secret."
My still heart plummeted to my ancient stomach, igniting a feeling of absolute dread and horror.  These were the words of my deepest fears. Miles had warned me—this is what Olivia was trying to tell me. I’d gotten too close. My mouth became dry and I had to force myself to breathe in order to appear normal.
I steadied my voice. "A secret?"
The sound of her metal spoon, tracing the edge of her cup, was the only noise in the room until she said, "The signs were all there. I mean, they’re stereotypical but stereotypes are for a reason, right?"
“I’m, uh, not following."
“Well, you’re freakishly neat and tidy. Your closet alone should have sent up a red flag."
Okay. This was true. I had an extreme case of obsessive compulsive disorder, but that was hardly an identifiable trait of being a vampire. It was more of a personal quirk exaggerated by the vampirism. I braced myself for more.
“Obviously your body is like…killer.” Her heart beat like a hummingbird's wings and I could almost feel the heat of nervousness rolling off her body. Only this silly woman would be embarrassed as she destroyed my life. Abruptly she said, "I mean, killer. I know a lot of men who would die for your physique."
She thought I looked amazing. A smug grin crept across my face before I shook it off, wondering for the millionth time what thoughts were running though her head. I was aware women found me attractive, as it was one of the lures that made humans such susceptible prey. To hear Amelia say those words brought about a rush of feelings I wasn't used to, but was it really important to say right now?
"Your skin is flawless, unblemished. And your hair…it’s a work of art."
“My hair?"
I hated my hair. Loathed it. It was the one thing that drove me absolutely insane post transition, but that alone was nothing definitive. I mean, look at Miles. He was bald. Forever.
She stepped closer and peered at my neck and chest. “You man-scape, right?"
I shook my head silently, afraid to speak. I had no idea what this 'man-scaping' thing was but I knew I didn't have it "Huh," she considered and turned back to the counter, her long hair swaying a bit as she took a sip of her tea. "You probably have more clothes than Kanye West."
The uneasy knot in my stomach quickly morphed into one of confusion. Kanye West? Who?
She continued, rambling now. "Sometimes you speak like you've never been around a woman, and you never have company, and the only time you did it was a man. Who, coincidentally, was also unbelievably gorgeous."
What? I literally was unable to follow her train of thought. What man was she talking about? I searched my memory and came up with the only male visitor we'd had.
Elijah.
She stilled, palms flat on the counter. When she spoke it was low and with conviction. "Like I said, I know what you’re hiding, Grant.
Here it comes. Images of what would come flashed in my mind. Would she run screaming? Would I have to kill her? In over a hundred years I'd never had a moment of exposure like this.
“I want you to know that I support you—no matter what."
I waited for a beat. I waited for the earth to stop. For the fear to sink in her eyes.
“Uh, what?”

Fighting his relentless love for Trevor, the guy he was raised to consider his brother, has been Tristan’s mission in life.
To distance himself from Trevor, even after discovering they weren’t really related, he left for college at sixteen. Moving into the city, building a new life, and running an anonymous blog about what he considers sick, twisted feelings might make Tristan famous on the Internet, but it isn’t enough to get over his obsession. Every time he goes home, a quick glance at Trevor brings it all flooding back.
When commitment-phobe Trevor announces he’s got a serious boyfriend during one of Tristan’s rare visits home, the adoring kid brother will be forced to run once again. This time, however, Trevor doesn’t stand back and watch him leave.
Instead, he follows him, making it nigh on impossible for Tristan to keep his love a secret for much longer.

EXCERPT:

Trev ran past me as he shouted, "Give me five."
His five minute prep for a night out had always baffled me. All he did was rush through a shower, pull some clothes out of his closet and throw them on, run his fingers through his hair, a comb if it was really needed, and, voila, he was ready, all perfect and sexy. I could never pull that off. If I tried, my hair would end up sticking out in all directions, my clothes wouldn't match, and I'd end up looking like a hobo.
True to style, he rumbled down the stairs five minutes later, smelling divine and looking as if he'd stepped out of a magazine cover. I swallowed hard, unable to stop myself from taking him in. How my cock did not tear through my jeans, I couldn't say. All I knew was I was now an expert at dressing in a way that would hide my bulge and keep it contained as much as humanly possible.
He hooked his arm around my shoulders and walked me outside.
"Where are we going, Trev?" I asked, looking up into his dark eyes.
I would introduce him as my brother, sure, but I never called him that when we were alone together, nor after that first introduction. I avoided referring to him as my sibling and used his name instead. I preferred his name; the same name I uttered on so many nights while writhing on top of my sheets and fucking my hand. Although the knowledge of how twisted I was never left me, I didn’t need to keep reminding myself he was my brother every time I addressed him.
"Mackie's Bar and Grill?" he asked, raising a brow. He wasn't taller by more than an inch or two, but it allowed him to look down at me, and I was happy with that. I loved to smile up at Trev and see him smile back, especially when he held me like this. It allowed my imagination to turn and twist the moment into something it was not.

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

Taboo-themed romances have become popular recently, and with this novella that's the start of a new series, readers are given the impression of a taboo relationship between two men who always had a close bond even after discovering they weren't bound by blood. That discovery though didn't diminish their feelings of guilt and fears over how their parents and neighbors would react. It all leads to an engaging story full of angst and desperation that culminates in a few steamy interludes late in the story.

Tristan has loved Trevor ever since he discovered the meaning of the word but convinced himself his feelings were dirty because of their brotherly bond. Knowing that he could never love another has left him alone with very little sexual knowledge as he never wanted to give himself to anyone other than Trevor. To bury his feelings over the years he ran away from home, went to college under early admittance, stayed away from home as much as possible and buried himself in work. Everything changes though on the day Trevor introduces his family to his boyfriend as he looks a lot like Tristan. Running away doesn't work this time as Trevor soon follows and all the feelings that have been brewing between them come boiling to the surface.

Trevor always felt close to Tristan but didn't want to tarnish the connection they had as brothers. Instead of running and hiding though he buried himself in numerous one-night stands and alcohol. He acted carefree but inside he too was hurting. After the debacle of bringing his boyfriend home he can no longer ignore Tristan's tendency to run and puts his job, and the life he's lived thus far, on the line by speaking truths long kept hidden in a moment of intense relief and joy.

Tristan and Trevor are both so worried about what others think that they forget about their own happiness. Trevor held back the truth as he felt Tristan needed a brother more than anything else growing up. Tristan was too worried about rejection from his parents, Trevor, and his community to admit his feelings and constantly beat himself up over feelings of dirtiness and perversion. His angst was heavy-handed and palpable and I felt immense sympathy for him. While the two of them wallowed in unhappiness it was their parents who brought a bit of sunshine to the angst in this story as they were sweet and supportive from realizing their sons were gay to the feelings the boys had for each other. Their son's happiness was their only concern and they're what every kid would want in a parent. Along with a romance that percolated for most of the story before combusting in a sensual tug of war was a clever plot device that allowed readers to dig deeper into Tristan's psyche and innermost thoughts. Tristan's blog about his perceived questionable feelings for Trevor caught the attention of the publishing world and it's put him on the cusp of fame. His blog posts were thoughtful, humorous, and self-deprecating and I enjoyed seeing this other side of Tristan; a less serious one. On a whole this was a quick read full of intense emotions that ended just as it got started as I long to see their relationship evolve out in the open. It nicely balanced angst with steamy encounters to keep me fully immersed in the outcome and is another satisfying read from Ms. Popescu that has me excited for the next installment in this new series.

My rating for this is a B.

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

As a quadriplegic it's not often that I find a character that realistically depicts the thoughts, emotions, and ups and downs of living in a world not always accessible.  With her creation of Lacey I applaud Ms. Goliesh in opening up dialogue when it comes to the definition of beauty, disability, and HEA.  The author continually holds up a mirror and it's not always a pretty reflection as the outside world often treats Lacey as a child constantly in need of help or an inspiration not allowed to to do anything but smile.  Through it all Lacey's just trying to find happiness and acceptance, making mistakes along the way that left her in tears, but ultimately growing stronger for all her turmoil and uncertainty.

Lacey's childhood in Belarus had her torn from her family and put into a hospital where loneliness and pain dwelt and set her on a path of insecurities and incessant fears that everyone will leave her because of her disability.  Being taken in by her aunt had her living a life her aunt would be proud of to show her gratitude but one that left her unfulfilled.  Grabbing the attention of the sexy bad boy musician became a defining moment for her as it opened her up to a world of possibilities, from love to heartbreak to a glimpse of the stars.  Hers isn't an easy journey though as she's teeming with self-doubts and her friends tend to perpetuate her insecurities.  For every positive move towards independence she made there was a negative in letting herself be consumed by doubts when people didn't act as she expected them to.  It ultimately had me labeling Lacey as admirable one moment while leaving me frustrated with her copious tears the next in a story that kept me engaged from start to finish.

Surrounding this unique main character was a colorful cast of secondary characters with reactions to Lacey's disability that sometimes left me cringing but always thinking.  With friends who were sometimes supportive, sometimes catty, Lacey was put through the emotional wringer as she not only judged herself but let others judge her too.  Ms. Goliesh didn't hold back though, didn't sugarcoat the realities of her disability, which I appreciated.  When it came to sexuality Lacey's deformities were dwelt with head-on in a way that was sensitive while retaining the sweet and sexiness of being with someone you love.  On a whole this was a story that forged its own path, from a main character who stirred up intense emotions in me to an ending that was equally unconventional, and readers will find it an intriguing read.

My rating for this is a C+.

Book Spotlight for The Rogue Debutante by Maggie Dallen

Fans of Steampunk romances will be drawn to this fast-paced and exhilarating tale of a young woman breaking the chains of her planned-out life to find excitement with a rugged pirate.  Keep reading to get a tantalizing taste of The Rogue Debutante by Maggie Dallen, the first installment in the Beau Monde Chronicles, and then add it to your bookshelf!

A rebellion is brewing and everyone must pick a side....even pirates and debutantes.
Delia Langley has been a prisoner all her life - a prisoner to high society and its conventions. A prisoner to her wealthy father's overprotective measures. A prisoner to a fiance-to-be in an arrangement made by her father to have a royal heir. In fact, the only time in her life that Delia ever felt free was when she was captured by the much-feared pirate Blackheart and his crew, and held for months while her father negotiated her ransom.
Now nineteen, the beautiful Delia is ready to leave another prison, the manmade "city in the sky," Beau Monde, where she's been tucked away, high above London all these many years. The plan is that after her debutante ball, her marriage to Lord Thaddeus Templeton will be announced, and the wheels will be set in motion for Delia to take her place as a proper society lady. Except she has other plans. Frustrated by the greed of the rich and the plight of the poor who live in the Shadowlands, a ghetto cast in darkness by the floating city of wealth above, Delia has been masquerading as Madame X, a French pirate, who has arranged to purchase her own pirate airship from the mysterious "Professor." Then there's Nicholas Crawley, the dashing, bachelor son of the family who have opened their home to Delia for her London visit. He's ruggedly handsome - and he's impossible. She doesn't expect to fall for him, but there's no denying the electricity that surges between them. A future with him would ruin everything, but her attraction to him is only one of many surprises poised to thwart her pirating plans in this charming steampunk tale.

EXCERPT:

The spires of London grew in the distance as Delia hurtled through the air, her petticoats and skirts flapping in the wind. Delia opened her mouth to scream but her cry was drowned out by the sound of air rushing past as she tumbled toward the earth.
A rough grip on her arm brought her to a sudden and painful stop. Her shoulder shrieked in agony as she dangled in midair. She latched onto the rope that swung in front of her face, but whoever was holding on to her arm didn't loosen his hold. She looked up to see who was keeping her from a grim and grotesque death.
She could only see her savior's dark form; his face was hidden in the shadow cast by the airship hovering overhead.
