Book Tour for Fear Nothing by Amber Malloy (REVIEW)

As a disabled reader I'm drawn to characters I can relate to which is why I'm excited to bring this book into the spotlight today.  Not only that but add in an interracial romance and you have a story that sets itself apart from the crowd which the author discusses here.  With its heroine losing her eyesight, and its sexy and supportive hero, readers will find themselves drawn to this tale of reunited loves.  Keep reading to get a glimpse of Fear Nothing by Amber Malloy, along with my impressions of it, then add it to your bookshelf!

DIVERSITY IN ROMANCE
Romance books are the ultimate escapism, a tool to be uplifting while allowing the reader to lose themselves in a great story.
In general romance is the bastard child of the book world. It hands down makes the most money, but no one wants to admit they either read or write it. Men who dare to tread into this genre, such as Nicholas Sparks coin their book’s Women’s FictionThis could be considered the first dark smudge against the genre.
The second is the lack of diversity in this field. Whites have the upper hand in romance leads.
Black women read most of everything BBW, WWWM, BWBM, even WWBM but whites are more selective. They don’t read POC leads because they don’t have to.
Black romance was never as broad as white main stream books. Publishing houses figured only a certain type of romance is what Black woman craved, i.e Church, Gansta, or Urban. The cute and homey romance that white women get were simply not in the cards for the rest of us. The problem with that is called stereotyping.
Marketing analytics would point to sales, and so would publisher. However, history has shown us that simply isn’t true. Publishers have what is called category romance, which is a type of story line they would like their authors to follow. It is their tried and true formula that works for them.
Anything outside of the norm just doesn’t get picked up. Nevertheless, famous authors have dispelled this type of book and a box format i.e Zane and E. L. James. These women hit every best seller chart by self-publishing. Considered a one off by industry standards at the time they are now the blue print for erotic romance.
Unfortunately, publishing is much like the movie industry in the argument that no one actually wants to go out on a limb. They would rather stick to what works for them.
When I first started writing I didn’t see much call for interracial works. Thanks, in part to the television show Scandal, Interracial romances have had a little boost.
The pairing with a strong black woman lead and white man seemed foreign to most.
Yet, interracial romance has been around for some time. What would help a lot of author’s is for the genre to catch on with women outside of their race.
Black women read books with white leads wouldn’t it be awesome if white women could do the same?

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

Bodhi King and Skye Everwood were once lovers until a tragic act tore them apart and left her with diminishing eyesight.  At the hands of a psychotic soldier both of their lives were forever altered with one gone into hiding and the other on a path of vengeance.  When their two paths cross again everything finally comes to a head as danger knocks on their front door in a fast-paced tale of second chances and surprising twists and turns.

Bodhi is a man on a mission.  Anger over the damage done to his relationship with Skye has him determined to ruin the finances of the Goodwin family for the heinous act Dane Goodwin committed long ago and part of what brings him to the town where Skye's hiding.  Past hurts quickly fade though as their mutual passions re-ignite during an event that brings to light the illegal and despicable acts of Dane and ultimately culminates in a pulse-pounding HEA.  Bodhi was heartbroken when Skye vanished without a trace and it fueled his vengeance. Finding her again has him scrambling to reclaim her and keep her safe from the danger that just arrived in town.  Vengeance is still alive but he also has plans to help her regain her eyesight.  His acts show a man used to commanding but he's also sweet, sexy, and supportive.  He's an honorable man determined to do what's right and willing to put his life on the line to accomplish that.

Skye's life dramatically changed the night Dane set off an explosion to cover-up his crimes.  It damaged her eyesight and had her father put her into hiding in a small town in the middle of nowhere.  He also took away the love of her life, leaving her with just a seeing eye dog for companionship.  She's gotten caught up in the lives of her new small town, becoming mayor after a questionable death, and become beloved by all.  The return of her former love, along with the threat that arrives in conjunction, puts her life in danger as attacks are blatantly made on her life.  Luckily Bodhi's there beside her every step of the way, keeping her safe and giving her an incentive to repair her eyesight.  Skye's a likable heroine who's made the best of a bad situation with a strong will and no-nonsense attitude.  She's made a place for herself amongst the colorful and mysterious denizens of Glory, Louisiana with exchanges that were funny and heartwarming.  Her interactions with her seeing eye dogs were also charming and made me like her even more.

The issue of Skye's blindness was handled well with a few examples subtly included in the narrative, along with her closeness to her seeing eye dogs that brought a tear to my eye as they reacted to Skye's life being threatened. Though the culmination of her journey wasn't as I wished it to be, it was still  satisfying.  The issue of her and Bodhi having an interracial relationship was not addressed at all which is a shame as I like romances that deal with social issues. Their relationship was a scorching one though that was mostly based in the past.  They quickly reunited in erotically-charged encounters that fell a bit flat though as we didn't get to see the foundation of their relationship begin.  The villain of this story is truly creepy with his blatant craziness and over-the-top demeanor, but the juxtaposition to his kind and caring brother Caine was compelling, and made Dane's mental deficiencies even more obvious.  Caine left me intrigued as he was commanding yet kind, he could do good but was willing to do bad when need be.  I'd love to see more of him as his decision late in the story upended everything.  Other engaging characters can be found amongst the denizens of this charming yet mysterious small town, from outspoken friends to hidden foes.  One final character that I'm drawn to is Jason, the tatted-up gay friend of Bodhi, who's larger than life with his words and deeds. I'd LOVE to see his story told as he was flirty and fun and his time in the story left me clamoring for more.  This story was a bit rough around the edges when it came to the flow as it almost went too fast and jumped from one scene to the next a bit frantically.  That didn't take away from my enjoyment, though it did disappoint me as I had such high hopes from its premise.  Despite that I still enjoyed this thrill ride, became fully immersed in its outcome, and cheered its conclusion.  I'm especially hoping to see more of Jason as he lit up the scenes he was in which is just one reason to recommend this book.

My rating for this is a B-

*I got this book from the author for review in exchange for my honest opinion.

EXCERPT:

“Are you accusing Kitty of going after your brother for his money?"
“She wouldn’t be the first."
Willie set her jaw firmly, just as she always had when she was angry. “A decade later and you’re still following your father’s example. You still think the worst of women, don’t you?"
“I’m simply waiting to be proven wrong."
“You were,” she said quietly, almost too low for him to hear.
“Once, Willie, and even that’s debatable. Every woman after you has fulfilled my lowest expectations."
She looked away, a pale blush spread across the creamy pale skin of her chest. “Mrs. Turner,” she reminded him, facing him once again. “Kitty’s not like that. She doesn’t need his money."
“Both your parents are gone and last time I knew, you hadn’t a penny to your name. How can she not need my brother’s money?"
“Because I make sure she’s taken care of. I’d do anything for that girl, no matter how silly or naïve she is. She’s still mine to take care of.” She jutted her chin proudly, just as she always had. George had to remind himself that this was no longer the stubborn, hopeful young woman he once knew, but a strong, experienced widow standing before him.
“Mr. Turner left you comfortable then?"
“My finances are none of your concern. We are doing quite well considering our circumstance."
He found that hard to believe. “Beg your pardon, Mrs. Turner, but a vicar and a viscount are two very different things. Now, if you don’t mind, I’ll need to get on the road soon. I heard mention that there might be a great deal of rain coming, possibly snow, and I doubt the weather will hold off much longer.” He turned his back to her and continued gathering the necessary items from around the study.
“I can’t allow you to go by yourself,” Wilhelmina protested, ignoring his less than subtle hint that their discussion had ended. “There’s no way I could possibly trust you to address this situation fairly after the unwarranted judgement you’ve already made regarding Kitty’s character."
“It’s only unwarranted if it’s not true and that remains to be seen, now doesn’t it?"
“I won’t let you do it, George."
The use of his given name stopped him cold. He took a deep breath, then turned to her, arms folded across his chest. “What exactly do you propose I do then, Mrs. Turner?"
“Take me with you.”

EXCERPT:

London – October 2015
Oliver
It’s too early to be dealing with this shit. My head is about to split in two, I didn’t have time to eat or even grab a cup of coffee, and to make my morning even more hellish, I’m horny as fuck. The image of a siren with green and blue hair, and a mouth as sinful and perverse as the goddess Venus comes into my mind. My cock strains against my jeans and I grip the steering wheel hard, turning my knuckles white. The moment I saw her singing on that stage, I felt the pull, an immediate attraction that had me craving her body like a junkie craves his next fix.
A car cuts me off and I hit the brakes, narrowly missing the moron. I slam my fist against the horn and don’t let it up until my annoyance subsides. I switch lanes and when I pass him, I make sure to lower my window and flip the driver off. Then I stomp on the gas pedal.
I love my car. It’s an Aston Martin Vanquish, the greatest fucking car in history, and it was the first thing I bought with my own money. I’d never had a problem spending my parents fortune before, but it wasn’t until I started making my own that I realized how good it felt to not depend on them anymore, to finally be able to cut the strings. No more forced monthly dinners, no more pretending I give a shit about their high-society friends and appearances.
As I approach Sebastian’s place, I grapple with my brain for an idea to help him out of the messed up situation he’s in. If the paparazzi see me, they will never leave. More likely, they will call their friends and we’ll have a mob gather in front of his apartment. I know I’m the reason they’re stalking my friend, I don’t want to make matters worse.
I park on the street parallel to Sebastian’s, in front of the town house that is directly behind his place. If I’m not mistaken, I believe there’s a small garden at the back. If Liv can jump off his kitchen balcony into that yard, she’ll be home free. I’m aware I’m betting on a lot of ‘ifs’ right now. I stare at the house in front of me, trying to guess what kind of people live in there.
A cab stops ahead, catching my attention. I squint behind my sunglasses, trying to peer inside the black car, but with the tinted windows it’s impossible. A minute later, the door opens, and I see a mane of multicolored hair emerge. I suck in my breath. You’ve got to be fucking kidding me. Her hair is even more luscious in the daylight and it falls in waves down her back. It’s the most gorgeous thing I have ever seen and my fingers itch to touch it, to ascertain that those locks are as soft as they look. I let my gaze travel down her body and I commit every single detail to memory. She’s wearing dark jeans so tight, they don’t leave much to my imagination. She has on some kind of flouncy, asymmetric black top that peeks out of her cropped leather jacket. But what seals my fate is the pair of over the knee high-heeled boots on her feet. I forget the humiliation of last night. I must have her. I won’t quit until she’s under me, writhing in pleasure.
She doesn’t glance at my car, even though she’s now standing right in front of it. Her gaze is fixated on the house I had been looking at myself a minute ago. She hesitates for a brief moment before she walks towards the front door. I manage to take my mind out of the gutter in time to realize what she’s about to do. Apparently, she’s here to save her friend, and somehow, came up with the same plan I did. A weird feeling unfurls in the pit of my stomach, something foreign that I quickly dismiss as hunger pains.
I exit the vehicle and make my presence known. She hears the noise and turns to me, narrowing her eyes. I remove my sunglasses and recognition finally hits her expression.
“You! What are you doing here?"
Fuck me! Her voice is like soft, rich, velvet. I didn’t get to appreciate it properly last night while she was screaming at me. Smooth and raspy, it’s even more lethal than her mouth.
Her tone is indignant which means she’s still mad at me for my bold proposition at the karaoke bar. I grin at her as I take a few steps closer. Her porcelain skin is flawless without any make-up. Instincts are telling me to keep walking until our chests touch and I can suck her plump lips into my mouth. But I can’t indulge in my crazy fantasies right now. My impulsiveness is what created this situation.
“I’m here to help your friend out,” I say.
**********
Saylor
I cross my arms and stare at the stupid man in front of me, unable to decide if he’s serious or not. The few times I’d caught him on television giving an interview, I’d pegged him to be a snobby jackass. Last night just served to prove me right.
His striking, almost surreal, blue eyes are glued to my face, searching for something I can’t fathom. It’s almost as if he’s trying to invade my mind, peer into my thoughts. His blond hair is messy, like he’s just run his fingers through it without a thought. I don’t want to concede, I don’t want to acknowledge it, but he is a sexy motherfucker. Tall and wiry, with a face carved to be on the cover of a magazine, and that arrogant mouth, he has serious potential to be my next huge mistake.
“I think you’ve done enough damage,” I say.
He moves closer, almost invading my space, but I don’t step back, I don’t want to show that his nearness bothers me. He’ll never know how he’s affecting me right now. I refuse to drop my stare from his electric eyes, tilting my head is the only way. He’s so damn tall.
“You know, this is as much your fault as it’s mine. If you had been more accommodating..."
My jaw drops, a reflex on my part when I hear complete and utter bullshit. Quickly, I realize Oliver likes to play games, mess with people’s heads. What he doesn’t know is that he’s met his match. I take a step forward, a movement he wasn’t counting on, if the flexing of his jaw is any indication. “You’re saying that if I had dropped down onto my knees and taken your dick into my mouth right then and there, no one would have recognized you?"
I’m close enough that I can see his pupils dilate and hear his sharp intake of breath. But he calls my bluff and leans down, until his nose almost touches mine, until his lips are close enough that I can smell his minty toothpaste. “I can’t undo the past, but the picture you just painted sounds a lot like an offering."
My heart is flittering like there’s a hummingbird trapped in my chest. But I won’t back down, I won’t step away. I’ve gone through more shit in my life than Oliver can possibly imagine. This stand-off is nothing.
I smile. “Do you wanna hear a secret? I probably would have done more than suck you into oblivion last night if you hadn’t been so crass about it. I guess you’ll never know what it fee--"
Oliver crashes his lips against mine, cutting off my reply. His hand cups the back of my head, his fingers curl around my hair, keeping me in place as he devours my mouth. And I let him. Not only do I let him, but I join the feast because this is the best fucking kiss ever.

EXCERPT:

The ring of the alarm was interfering with a perfectly good daydream, but when I realised the noise was coming from the phone, I grabbed at it. None of my family called this early in the morning, so I worried it was an emergency.
“Hello?” I said down the phone, bracing myself for bad news.
“Tell me you were touching yourself in bed and thinking of me when I called,” Kieran replied.
“You sound like some heavy-breathing pervert,” I said, giggling.
“Irish, that’s exactly what I am."
“Serious, what’s with the heavy breathing?"
“I’m running, but I’ve got hands free."
“Doesn’t it mess up your rhythm to talk while you run?” I couldn’t imagine being able to run to the corner shop and back, let alone hold a conversation while I was doing it.
“Hell yes, but it’s worth it to speak to you. Between my training and your work, I’m getting some serious withdrawals. Last night just made things worse. Now I want you in my bed every night,” he admitted. I couldn’t help my little groan as I imagined that too. “Seriously, baby, you can’t be making noises like that when I’m not there. Running and talking is one thing, but even I don’t think I can run with a hard-on."
I laughed as I imagined it, and just like that, Kieran had filled up the gloom with his light.
“Why are you running again?” I asked him. “Didn’t you run to the gym this morning?"
“Usually I don’t have to run again until lunch or the evening, but Danny’s pissed."
“Why?” I’d met Danny a few times since I’d known Em, but I didn’t know him well. Still, I couldn’t see what Kieran could have done to wind him up already. He’d only been at the gym a couple of hours.
“Tommy shouted across the gym to ask me where I spent last night, because he called me at Ma’s and I wasn’t there. When I told him I spent it with you, Danny lost his shit. He thinks I broke the sex ban, and despite pleading my innocence, I don’t think he’s really buying it. He told me to ‘feck off outta his sight for five miles."
“Poor baby. Do you think it would help if I wrote you a note confirming that my virtue’s intact?” I asked him, giggling.
“Even if he didn’t tell me to feck off, it wouldn’t be entirely true. I mean, we might not have technically broken the ban, but I think about fingering you at least once every half hour,” he admitted.
“Kieran,” I whined, rubbing my thighs together, trying to ease the ache building between them.
“’Course, then I start think about touching my tongue between your legs, and how sweet you’ll taste. And that gets me thinking what it’ll feel like when I’m finally inside you, below with you above me, and behind with you bent over in front of me. Whether I’ll have my hands on your tits, or whether they’ll be in my mouth,” he said. It might have been my imagination, but his breathing seemed to get much harder.
“You’re going to give yourself that hard-on,” I warned.
“Yeah, it’s a bit late for that, Irish. Not one of my best ideas, calling you in the middle of training."
“Serves you right for getting me all hot and horny when you aren’t here to do anything about it,” I replied, laughing.
“Man, that is a fucking beautiful sound. I’ll see you tonight, love, and I don’t worry, I don’t mind in the slightest if you touch yourself after I hang up as long as you’re thinking about me,” he said.
“Good luck training for the rest of the day with that visual in mind,” I replied, making him groan as he realised what he’d done.
“It’s gonna be a long day,” he said on a sigh.
“Only twelve more hours, Kier, and just for you, I’ll wear my favourite blue panties today to match the colour of your balls,” I replied. The line went quiet for a second, and it sounded like he’d stopped.
“Irish, I think I’ve finally met my match,” he said, breathlessly.

Readers who enjoy couples that are more seasoned will find themselves charmed by the sweet and sensual burgeoning relationship between the shy Emory, with her low self-esteem issues, and the strong-willed and protective Gray, who's bored with superficial encounters based on his fame. Theirs is a slow moving relationship in which through every word and deed Gray reminds Emory of her innate sensuality while she shows him her love for the man he is instead of the persona he created. Throw in some outside interferences due to his abusive father and her newfound mafia neighbors and you end up with a story juggling elements that don't always fit seamlessly together but ends up delivering a HEA in the end.

Emory met and married quickly during her college years so hasn't had much experience with sex beyond the husband who recently left her for someone younger while making her feel inadequate. Her self-esteem is at an all-time low due to his belittling words which leaves her with little desire to be with anyone expect for what's in her bedside table. For so long she saw herself as only a mom with her son being her main concern, but with his leaving home she can now find a life of her own...and perhaps a new love if she can just be brave and bold enough to grab on to the sweet and sexy former MMA champ who rushes to her rescue at a wedding. Emory's a likable woman but her self-esteem issues lead to awkward talk and her rushing to believe the worst. It takes a lot of gentle handling from Gray to put her at ease but once she finally takes the plunge she finds out what she'd been missing throughout her boring marriage. With her sexual liberation I had hoped she would've also found strength at protecting herself instead of cowering and letting others defend her. She's sweet and honest though, with every one of her emotions easily seen, which is exactly what Gray needs after years of being liked for his fame instead of who he is inside.

Gray had a harsh childhood of abuse at the hands of a vile man who was left untouched by the law despite his numerous crimes. All the blood and bruises though led him to fame in the MMA and becoming more than his father could ever hope to be. His father's hatred never stopped as he constantly picks apart his son's self-esteem every chance he gets, dirtying up the life Gray has made for himself. After years of superficiality with his partners he's shocked by how powerful his feelings are for the shy and demure Emory as he's never had to work so hard to get the attention of a woman before. He may feel unworthy of her but he relishes being her hero and getting to introduce her to the delights of the bedroom as he takes his time getting there which proves that all good things come to those who wait. Gray is sexy and rugged with strong Alpha tendencies that don't seem to bother Emory as he's the one she counts on whenever she's afraid. The pain his father inflicted on him was awful and I hated him still letting his father affect his life after all he's accomplished.

This was a story that moved a bit slowly at times despite my being charmed by the sweetness of Gray and Emory's relationship. I could understand Gray moving slowly with Emory as her self-esteem issues ran deep but it still made for a lot of frustration as it felt like a glacial pace at times. Once they finally culminated their relationship though it resulted in some scorching encounters that showed him to be a champ not only in the ring but in the bedroom too. Gray's issues with his father would've been more than enough angst to make the HEA rewarding as it was a heartbreaking situation. That's why I was equally frustrated by the author's inclusion of the mafia theme as it felt so out of place as did the reason behind the danger to Emory. This element was jarring to the story and unnecessary in my opinion. Ultimately though it's Gray who kept me fully invested in this story as I liked the gruff fighter and his care and concern for the gentle soul he's brought into his world.

My rating for this is a C+

*I got this book from the author for review in exchange for my honest opinion.

AUTHOR INFO:

Who doesn't love the romance of the old West? USA Today Bestselling author Vanessa Vale takes the sensual appeal of rugged cowboys a step further with her bestselling books set in the Montana Territory. They are much more than just sexy historical westerns. They're deliciously naughty reads that sometimes push the boundaries of fantasy. It's pure escapism with quite a few very hot, very alpha cowboys. When she's not writing, Vanessa savors the insanity of raising two boys, is figuring out how many meals she can make with a pressure cooker, and teaches a pretty mean karate class. She considers herself to be remarkably normal, exceedingly introverted and fairly vanilla, which does not explain her steamy stories and her fascination with cowboys, preferably more than one at a time. She lives in the Wild Wild West where there's an endless source of 'research' material.
