Book Spotlight on Silent Voices by Thom Collins

Readers will be drawn to this tale of a young boy put in danger after placement in a gated facility in the middle of nowhere and the investigation into his safety by an uncle who's worried for him and the journalist who knows about the danger behind those gates.  Keep reading to get a tempting glimpse of Silent Voices by Thom Collins, a gothic-fueled m/m romance full of suspense, then add it to your bookshelf!

A desire for justice as strong as their passion for each other.
Concerned about the welfare of his young cousin, Josh Jackson, a restaurant owner, traces the boy to Winterstone Grange, a gated manor deep in the country. Miles from anywhere, the protected walls of this stately house conceal dark secrets. Josh’s search brings him into contact with Ed Brolin, a handsome journalist who has spent weeks investigating the secrets of the Grange and its owner. Ray Armstrong is a wealthy business man with influential connections in Parliament and the police. Ed knows exactly what goes on at the Grange but without evidence, he hasn’t got a story.
Drawn together by instant attraction and a powerful hunger for justice, Josh and Ed are determined to expose the sordid secrets of the grange despite the risks it poses. Josh has never met a man like Ed before—so strong, determined and masculine. Falling in love is easy. But they’ll have to put their emotions aside if they’re going to give a voice to all the silent victims of Winterstone Grange.

EXCERPT:

Josh Jackson didn’t worry when his cousin failed to come home. It was Saturday night and Kevin was eighteen. Josh wasn’t about to impose a curfew on the kid. Neither was he going to babysit. Kevin was old enough to take care of himself.
Josh checked Kevin’s room when he came home from work at one o’clock. The spare bed hadn’t been made since Kevin had gotten out of it that morning and yesterday’s clothes were all over the floor—discarded jeans with his boxers still inside them, a scruffy T-shirt and a pair of dirty socks. The smell of the socks hit him from the doorway. Despite the reek of cheap deodorant and aftershave filling the room, the socks were pungent. Teenagers. Josh wasn’t about to tidy up after him so he left things as they were, including the damp towel draped over the foot of the bed. The kid was only staying a few nights. If he wanted to live in a mess like that, so be it, so long as he left the place as he’d found it when he moved on.
Josh shut the door and went to bed. He wished his cousin luck. If the boy wanted to get laid, he’d rather he did it somewhere else. It was bad enough that Josh’s lodger, Bobby, regarded the place as a Grindr pit stop, without his cousin treating it like a knocking shop, too.
Josh read for a while and half-listened for the sound of Kevin coming home, but eventually fell asleep.
He wasn’t overly concerned in the morning to find Kevin’s room just as he’d left it, though by now it smelled considerably worse. The fancy fragrances had worn off and all that remained was the fetid odor of teenage sweat and damp towel. So, he stayed out all nightGood on him. Josh had been a teenager once, a horny one at that, so he could totally relate. Kevin wouldn’t get the chance to fuck around much when he was at home. His mother had very rigid views on that. It wouldn’t have mattered whether Kevin had turned out straight or gay. His mother had raised a good boy and intended to keep him that way.
Kevin will be going back to her in a couple of days. He might as well have fun while the leash is off.
He was a good-looking lad. Josh knew he’d be popular in town. A little baby-faced for his age, but with the family features of blue eyes and blond hair, his fresh twinkie image would attract plenty of attention. He looked a lot like Josh had at that age. Josh had been a slim-looking twink until well into his twenties. It was only in the last few years he’d filled out with muscle and looked more like a man. The beard helped. How grateful he’d been when the ability to grow more than a few wisps of pale chin-fluff finally occurred. He kept it neat with a regular trim, but now that he had grown a beard, he couldn’t ever see himself being without one.
Josh called Kevin’s mobile while waiting for his morning coffee to brew. It rang a few times before going to voicemail. “Hi, it’s me,” he said. “Not checking up on you, I just want to know you’re okay. Give me a ring back, or a text when you get this message. Just to say you’re alive... Otherwise I’ll have to call your mother,” he added jokingly and hung up.
He had bigger concerns than a randy teenager. His restaurant, The Cellar Steps, was short on staff today and fully booked for both lunch and dinner. He’d asked all his remaining staff to come in early to help with the prep and service, which meant getting in even earlier himself. As the owner, it wasn’t necessary, since he employed a manager for the day-to-day running, but Josh believed in setting an example from the top down. That meant rolling up his sleeves when things got tight. He thought about putting a little cash Kevin’s way to help out, if he arrived home in decent time and wasn’t too hung over.
He heard the heavy thud of the newspapers landing in the hall. Perfect timing. A little news and some freshly brewed coffee. A relaxing start to an otherwise hectic day.
Josh sat at the kitchen table with multiple Sunday supplements spread all around him when Bobby stumbled out of his bedroom in just his boxers and a T-shirt, yawning and scratching his belly and balls at the same time. His semi-hard dick waggled in the front of his shorts. Bobby lurched into the bathroom and returned a few minutes later, looking fractionally more awake, minus morning wood.
“Coffee?” Bobby asked. “Okay if I help myself?"
“You know where it is,” Josh said, drawing back from the stench of alcohol that came off him in stale waves. “Jesus, your blood must be one hundred proof."
“I think I’m still drunk,” Bobby observed. “The hangover hasn’t kicked in yet."
“I don’t envy you when it does."
“One cup of this and I’m crawling back beneath the duvet."
Josh looked at him uncertainly. An idea had just occurred to him. He hoped he was wrong. “I don’t suppose my cousin is under that duvet with you?"
Bobby chuckled, his dark eyes crinkling. “Wouldn’t that be something? He is kinda hot. But little blond cupcakes are not my thing. In Kevin’s case, I could make an exception. Maybe."
“But did you?"
“Too close to home, bro. The kid’s a cutie but he ain’t worth the earache. I’d never hear the last of it."
It was some relief. Josh didn’t have a problem with his young cousin fucking around—but with Bobby, no way. His lodger was a good friend but a total slut. Kevin would need a lot more experience under his belt before he was ready for that old hound. “I don’t suppose you do know where he is? He hasn’t been home."
“He’s between somebody’s sheets, all right. I walked into town with him last night, had a drink and showed him where to go."
“You left him on his own?"
“No, he left me. I guess I cramped his style. He headed off toward Gala Square with a group of studenty types. He didn’t know how fast to ditch me once he got to talking to people his own age."
Josh loosened up again. He’d been right about Kevin. He knew what he was doing. A young man in a new city making friends fast. There was nothing to worry about.

Rosa Getzi lives a life of intrigue at Poiana Brasov with Clement, a werewolf, and Cassandra, the witch. Her past doesn't matter to her – until she discovers what it holds.
Prince Michael Sigmaringen joins his sister-in-law, Caroline, and the vampire prince, Darius, in a daring rescue, igniting Rosa's desire to find her family. However, all is not as it appears. Rickard, Rosa's friend, escapes with her. Clement will go to any lengths to get Rosa and Rickard back.
At Darius' fortress, Michael soon discovers Rickard is a new breed of werewolf – one who can control the change, and Clement hopes to exploit Rickard's abilities.
Michael's courage, strengths, and convictions will be tested like never before. Can Michael and Rosa find true happiness and the rid the lupine haunting of the Sigmaringens once and for all?

EXCERPT:

Some inner voice encouraged her to leave with him. It was the right thing to do. "Turn around," she said quietly.
"Why?"
"So I can change."
"I don't trust you." His reply was quick. "Leave your chemise on." He walked to the window and glanced outside, then checked his pocket watch.
Rosa figured that was the most privacy he was willing to afford her and unfastened her robe. Quickly, she stepped into the winter dress without putting on a corset. "I need you to lace up the back."
Michael approached and tied up the stays with familiar ease. There was that word again -- familiar. Rosa shivered. What did it mean? How was he familiar when she couldn't recall seeing him before? She found her boots and slid them on. They were lined with fur and went up to her knees. She couldn't articulate her compliance, but could say an instinctual desire drove her to do his bidding. Yes, there were clues, but no easy answers.
He was a witch, like her. She responded to his kiss, enjoying it far too much, though she wouldn't admit that to him. He hadn't hurt her, and he knew her mother. The thought of finding her mother filled her with a sense of comfort. In all honesty, Rosa, however, couldn't remember her life before coming to Poiana Brasov, but she hated to think that Clement and Cassandra, who had been so kind to her, had deceived her. Rosa wouldn't deny her instincts and decided to follow the clues. When there was a minute, she intended to get her answers from Michael.
Her boots secure, she slid her arms into her winter coat. Michael grabbed a scarf and gloves from a shelf in her closet, presenting them to her. His face betrayed nothing -- not one hint of pleasure or dissatisfaction. Instead, he grabbed her gloved hand and led her out of the room.
Rosa noticed the noise continued outside of the fortress. Just on the other side of her door, Andrei lay crumpled on the ground. His chest rose and fell. Thank Corvinus he appeared to be sleeping.
Michael moved with unnatural speed. His grasp on her hand was tight, tugging her behind him. They proceeded down the hall toward the servants' staircase.
The inner fortress remained quiet. Several candles in wall sconces had burnt down to the stubs, casting long, inky shadows over the stone walls.
Reaching the staircase, Rosa paused. "I need to check on Rickard."
"There's no time. We delayed too long as it is." Michael dragged her down the stairs.

Book Spotlight on In the Flesh by KD Grace (GIVEAWAY)

Readers looking for a compelling tale that's not easy to categorize as it blends Gothic and dark romance with a bit of the paranormal will find themselves drawn to this series starter.  Keep reading to get a tempting taste of In the Flesh by KD Grace, and learn about mashing up genres when crafting a story, then add this unforgettable read to your bookshelf.  In honor of this first installment in the Medusa's Consortium series make sure to fill out the form below for the chance to win a $30 Amazon GC too!

I have to admit, I was very skeptical when my husband rented a copy of Cowboys and Aliens for our evening’s viewing pleasure a couple of years ago. I mean seriously – that’s like mixing clams with chocolate covered cherries isn’t it? And then there was Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Slayer and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Is it an acquired taste? Well it certainly wasn’t for me. I have to admit I loved all three. That got me thinking about mash-ups and rules and how they exist to be broken. In the Flesh wasn’t really a mash-up when it started its life ten years ago as a short story. It was just sexy horror. I didn’t even plan the mash-up bit when I began what I thought was In The Flesh, the novella. But as it evolved into a novel, it became a strange mix of demons, vampires, angels and Medusa – that’s right, even Medusa shows up for the funAnd why not? It is the first book of Medusa’s Consortium, after all.
What I discovered as I wrote it is that the characters who joined the cast throughout the novel may have come to the party uninvited, but they were always a welcome addition that made the story better and stronger and juicier as it unfolded. Those new characters and the chemistry they created opened the doors to whole new possibilities and made the novel shine and sizzle in ways I could have never achieved without a little party-crashing mash-up, making ready for one giant twist of a mash-up that absolutely guaranteed Michael, Susan and the Guardian were gonna need a sequelEnjoy the excerpt and don’t forget to comment for a chance to win the giveaway.

When Susan Innes comes to visit her friend, Annie Rivers, in Chapel House, the deconsecrated church that Annie is renovating into a home, she discovers her outgoing friend changed, reclusive, secretive, and completely enthralled by a mysterious lover, whose presence is always felt, but never seen, a lover whom she claims is god. As her holiday turns into a nightmare, Susan must come to grips with the fact that her friend’s lover is neither imaginary nor is he human, and even worse, he’s turned his wandering eye on Susan, and he won’t be denied his prize. If Susan is to fight an inhuman stalker intent on having her as his own, she’ll need a little inhuman help.

EXCERPT:

By the time I finished my breakfast and was ready to go, Annie was already fast asleep, curled in her nest at the foot of the altar. Outside, the smell of burning rubbish stung my eyes and the back of my throat.
I had little enthusiasm for the handbag sale, nor for lingering at the make-up counter. Instead I found myself in a coffee shop, laptop open researching God’s love life, which turned out to be a long history of seducing humans.
Zeus visited Danae in a shower of gold. He seduced Leda in the form of a swan. Eros came to Psyche in the dead of night forbidding her to look upon his face. Hades dragged Persephone down to the Underworld. The Virgin Mary was impregnated by the god of the Bible. In the New Testament, Christ is the bridegroom, and the church his bride. And the list went on and on. Perhaps even the indwelling of the Holy Spirit was just another way for divinity to experience flesh.
I had always loved mythology, and I’d read all these stories before. I’d just never put them together to get the whole picture. And though I was seeing an aspect of divinity that I found rather disturbing, I couldn’t help feeling there was still a piece of the puzzle missing.
I suppose I should have felt relieved. Annie wasn’t as unusual as I’d thought. God was the ultimate stalker, and he didn’t seem to be very faithful to his lovers. Just Annie’s type. I tried not to think about the implications of my experience in the bath last night. After all, it was just mythology, and I’d had a lot of wine. And there’s never any accounting for my vivid imagination. After all, I was a writer. I made my living as a teller of tales.
“What are you reading?"
I jumped at the sound of Annie’s voice and quickly minimized the page. “Didn’t expect to see you here."
“I’m feeling better."
“How did you know where to find me?"
She leaned down and whispered next to my ear. “My lover’s God, remember? You can’t hide from him.” I barely had time to register shock before she reached down and restored the page.
“Trying to learn a little bit more about him, are we?”  She smiled at the monitor and nodded knowingly. “None of this does him justice. He’s the Hound of Heaven. He’s always pursuing those he loves, and there’s no escaping. Once he’s set his eyes on you, he’ll do whatever it takes to make you his own."
I suddenly felt cold.

Book Spotlight for The River’s Embrace by A. Silenus

Readers who like their romance steamy and mixed with a bit of suspense will find much to draw them to this book.  Keep reading to get a glimpse of The River's Embrace by A. Silenus and then add it to your bookshelf....

With her blond tresses and blue eyes, London fabric retailer Margery “Margie” Tull is used to being admired. When she’s hired to decorate a riverside manor house though, she suspects ulterior motives.
Lord of the manor Percival Winstanley reveals a long ago love triangle leading to death and the bewitching of his son and heir Stephen. Margie’s cousin Shyan is supposed to protect her. But he’s lured away by Winstanley’s cougarish housekeeper, Mrs. DePlessey, leaving Margie in the dubious care of servant Kern.
Unsure whom to trust, Margie turns first to artist Raphael Watts, also working at the house. Meanwhile Stephen hovers in the background trying to draw her attention to a cottage across the river. Somehow the women who live there are a portent of Margie’s fate. If only Stephen can convince her of what lies in store Margie can give new hope to the manor and its heir.

EXCERPT:

Margie crept from the hall to the library and back again. It was the strangest thing how people either were not there when they were wanted or were breathing down your neck and scaring you out of your skin. There seemed no middle way in this house.
She would have to go upstairs. It was the obvious place to look. She started climbing steps, feeling like an intruder and unsure how she would explain why she was snooping around the house if she did find someone. A snigger told her she was on the right track. Tiptoeing across the landing and down a passage way, she homed in on the intertwined voices, Shyan’s wisecracks and Mrs. DePlessey’s purrs of appreciation.
Through the gap between an open bedroom door and the jamb, Margie watched unobserved. Shyan was standing on a foot stool wearing only underwear. Evidently measuring requirements had reached the upper thigh. A crouching Mrs. DePlessey’s glistening nails trailed a tape over the city boy’s pale flanks. Shyan’s muscles tensed as her fingers neared the straining material of his briefs.
“Am I tickling?” The question was made to sound guileless, like a dentist asking “Am I hurting you?”
“Well a bit,” Shyan said. “But it don’t bother me.”
I’ll bet it doesn’t, Margie thought. She was so mad at him. Had he forgotten why he had come? Not to dally with the housekeeper, that’s for sure.
The waistband was the next number on Mrs. DePlessey’s list, and as her arms circumnavigated Shyan’s midriff with the tape measure she could not refrain from rubbing the bangles on her wrists against his bare skin. The metal must have been cold, because Shyan jumped slightly at the touch.
“Oh, I am sorry. Did I do that?”
You calculating bitch, Margie wanted to shriek. She’d seen better acting on the soaps.
But there was nothing simulated about Shyan’s reaction once the tape made contact at the base of his spine. Margie didn’t have to see below his waistband to know his self-control was on the edge. It wouldn’t take much to unbalance him.
All it did take was another move in Mrs. DePlessey’s repertoire of suggestive contact. As her breasts prodded his stomach, ostensibly so she could complete the tape loop, Shyan’s hands descended onto her shoulders. Then the tape was forgotten as her lips came up to meet his. Her clasping arms steadied him on the wobbling stool. They moved to the bed in an uncoordinated tango, and toppled into a grinding embrace. Shyan tackled the buttons on her blouse. His hand groped for the bra clip at her back. He suckled on an inflamed turret of a nipple, with a gusto equal to Ainsworth’s effort during Margie’s previous spying escapade. Then the couple’s hands met and, steered by one or the other—or both—glided in unison down the crevasse between their bodies until they disappeared inside Shyan’s briefs.
Margie was mesmerized. Exasperated as she was by her cousin’s easy compliance, she couldn’t help being fascinated by this mesh of desires. That was why it was so startling when Mrs. DePlessey rolled Shyan to one side and, with a light kiss on the lips, told him, “We must save this.”
Shyan gaped and attempted to insert a hand between her closed thighs.
“For what?” he asked.
She smiled, not in the provocative way Margie half expected, but rather as if Shyan hadn’t understood.
“In time,” she said. “In time.”

Book Spotlight for Redemption by Randi Cooley Wilson (Review)

Today I'm bringing you an intense and atmospheric read that is the third installment in the Revelation series.  Keep reading to get a glimpse of Redemption by Randi Cooley Wilson along with my impressions of it.  You'll also learn a bit about the author before adding this saga to your bookshelf.

LET'S GET TO KNOW A BIT ABOUT THE AUTHOR.....

TSP:  How did you come up with the idea for this story?
RCW:  The Revelation Series was an idea that progressed over time. As a long-time lover of the paranormal romance genre, I was craving something different and distinctive. In 2008, I was home on maternity leave and starting writing, which is something I do frequently as a creative outlet. Before I even realized it, my one-off sentences, and character backgrounds morphed into a story. From there, I folded in my obsession with John Milton’s Paradise Lost and my love for gothic architecture and really romanced the idea of the mythology behind my supernatural creatures.
TSP:  Tell us about your first book. What would readers find different about the first one and your most recent published work?
RCW:  This is an interesting question. I feel the more I write, the deeper my books get. Revelation, (The Revelation Series, book #1) was really about the mythology behind the supernatural creatures and the world building that surrounds the characters. Restraint, (The Revelation Series, book #2) was about the love between the main characters, Asher and Eve. Redemption, (The Revelation Series, book #3) takes you deeper into their world and also allows the secondary characters to shine, which I love.
TSP:  What is for you the perfect book hero?
RCW:  This is a great question. I prefer a hero who is strong, emotional, overprotective, yet has flaws.
TSP:  Tell us something that people would be surprised you know how to do.
RCW:  Um…I can twerk (smirks).

A LOVE RETURNS.
A LOYALTY IS BROKEN.
AND WAR BEGINS.
For Eve Collins, darkness has descended after her love vanished into the night sky. A new protector has been appointed, one who challenges everything she’s believed to be true.
In this third installment of The Revelation Series, Eve will become aware of dangers and worlds that exist only in her nightmares, and bloodline secrets that will trigger a centuries old war.
You can escape anything, except your destiny.

EXCERPT:

“Someday, when this is all over, I promise you’ll have the peace you’re craving. It will be just me and you, siren,” he vows quietly.
I sigh in contentment. “That’s all I want, Ash.”
“Then I’ll move Heaven and earth to make sure you get it.”
I turn to face him and push up on my tiptoes. Leaning in, I give him a slow, molten kiss. I push everything I feel for him into the gesture. I want to fill every space of his soul, the way he does mine.
It’s like I’m trying to climb inside his heart and live there. I’m not sure how long we stay like this, in our own private, perfect moment, but I never want to leave.
Breathlessly, I pull away. My eyes find Asher’s. “What is it you want the most?”
Asher’s intense gaze holds mine, taking my breath away.“Redemption.”

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

Picking up where the previous book left off, Eve is reeling from Asher's absence but the upcoming war doesn't allow time for grief as she's given a new handler.  Though she's young she knows she has to put her pain behind her and under Gage's tutelage she's becoming stronger and more independent.  Whereas Asher tended to over-protect her Gage lets her stand on her own, only stepping in when he needs to.  Though she grows close to Gage it's no love match.  There's mutual respect and deep friendship, which is somewhat tainted by his subtly questionable nature that leaves me worried about his loyalties as at times he seems clearly entrenched on the side of good, while at other times..... No matter what though I found him a compelling and delectable yet mysterious man.

Through it all Asher is still Eve's one and only love which becomes more complicated upon his return and as the truth of their bloodlines is revealed.  Their relationship is frowned upon by the Council which adds in even more emotional turmoil in addition to the truths about each of them revealed here.  Asher is a strong and overwhelming man who consumes the scenes he's in.  He's poetic and romantic and will always protect Eve.  Knowing what we know about them now though gives their relationship a Romeo and Juliet vibe.

Along with these main characters being the lynchpin of this story, former secondary characters step into the spotlight here too.  Callan continues to entertain and his humor is greatly appreciated in a story arc getting deeper and more emotionally intense.  McKenna is a strong-willed and very outspoken woman.  While some might see her as crass, I appreciated her brutal honesty in saying what needed to be said.  Their contributions and interactions with others lightened my mood and made for a more emotionally well-rounded story.

This is a story that takes you on a wild ride.  It's full of twists and turns, laughter and tears, along with truths revealed and a traitor on the loose.  Hell's getting ever closer and with the kidnapping of someone close to Eve there's a sense of doom on the horizon, a helplessness that evil will prevail.  Seeing Eve get stronger gives us hope for the future, but with an ending that leaves you screaming in agony it's anyone's guess what the future will bring.  With its well-developed world-building, multi-faceted characters, and sensual and maturing romance between Asher and Eve this is a story getting more compelling.  Though this book quickly fills you in on what's come before, readers will find it more richly rewarding having read it from the start.  Those who enjoy a vividly drawn fantasy that puts readers on an emotional roller coaster will want to hop on this compelling journey with lots of travails yet to reveal!

My rating for this is an A.

*I got this book from the author for review in exchange for my honest opinion.
