Book Review for Better When It Hurts by Skye Warren

Five years ago we lived in the same house. He was the ultimate bad boy. And my foster brother.
Now he’s back. Tougher, harder, meaner. All of it aimed at me, because I was the one who sent him away. It’s payback time. He wants his pound of flesh, and I am helpless to say no.

Readers who like their stories steamy, with plots that aren't cookie cutter, and characters that are complex and full of inner conflict will be drawn to this dark and angsty read.  It's a read that's not always easy as it deals with intense emotions and the darker aspects of life, but it's one that pulls you in from the first page to the last.

Though this book is the second installment in Ms. Warren's Stripped series it can stand on its own as the author, from the very first page, jumps right into the action through the heroine's viewpoint.  Through this heroine, Lola, we discover a tale full of pain and sadness that's made her who she is today.  Being stuck in the foster care system as a child led to a lot of dark moments that have given her trust issues along with lots of painful memories that have hardened her heart.  The only bright spot was the time she shared a home with Blue...and even that ended badly as her lie sent him away.  She's a survivor though, a woman not proud of being a stripper but doing what she has to to care for the woman who represents family to her.  She always saw Blue as her savior but his becoming bouncer at her club makes him a threat as she suspects he's back for revenge for her long-ago words.  It's ultimately a dark revenge he's after focused on her body that leaves her conflicted as she understands his anger but is still drawn to him.  As their sexual encounters become hotter, past feelings bubble to the surface blurring the lines between revenge and love.  Through it all Lola remains a strong-willed woman you can't help but root for after all she's survived.  Her conflict over Blue's attentions to her are understandable as their connection is crackling and full of sexual tension that had me hoping they'd find HEA.

Blue is the quintessential anti-hero as he oozes darkness and rage early on.  Being around Lola leaves him conflicted though as years of anger have made him the brutal and dangerous man he is today.  His words towards Lola aren't always kind but remembrances of the feelings he once had for her leave him protective of her and wanting the only man touching her to be himself.  Blue's not always likable, with words sometimes cruel and hurtful, but he's larger than life and his mere presence drives this story and kept me captivated despite his bad behavior.  It's his flashes of care and concern towards Lola, along with his posessiveness, that had me hoping for their HEA and his intense sexuality and talent for taking dirty that had me fully immersed in their deepening relationship.  From start to finish readers will be intrigued by Blue despite his obvious flaws as there's a good man hiding behind a mountain of pain.  His journey towards self-acceptance and moving past years of pain and anger is a rewarding one made richer with the possibility of sharing it with the one woman he truly cared for.

Ms. Warren has crafted a compelling story with realistic characters dealing with heavy emotions.  The characters are a bit rough around the edges, jaded by life, but their tale is one you can't help getting caught up in.  Though I was hoping for a fuller epilogue I was still satisfied by where Lola and Blue are at the end of the story.  On a whole this is a story that fully immerses you from the first page to the last, entrenching you in its sensual haze, and I look forward to where Ms. Warren takes us next.

My rating for this is a B+

Paige Moore has a fulfilling business designing couture corsets for her high profile clientele, but her love life is sorely lacking. Being burned in the worst way possible by Sawyer Burrows has left her guarded and wary when it comes to men and their motives. When her best friend presents her with an invitation to The Players Club, she embraces the chance to enjoy a hot night with a stranger, and finally put her past heartbreak, and Sawyer, behind her.
Sawyer knows he devastated Paige with his careless actions a year and a half ago, and he’s lived every day since with those regrets. Now, seeing Paige at The Players Club, he knows this is his chance to make amends and prove that there is still something between them worth pursuing. If sensual pleasure is what Paige is looking for, then he intends to be the man to spend the night seducing every part of her.
Paige’s surrender is Sawyer’s ultimate goal, but once her desires are sated, will she give them the second chance they deserve?

The bell on the door to Couture Corsets tinkled, announcing that a customer had just walked into Paige Moore’s small boutique in Old Town San Diego, where she designed and sold custom-made corsets.
“It’s just me,” she heard her good friend Raina Beck call out.
Knowing Raina would just head to the back area of the shop where Paige did all her designing and creations, she continued hand sewing small seed pearls to an exquisite white satin corset she was making for a client’s wedding night.
A moment later, Raina walked past the curtain of glittering crystals hanging in the doorway that separated the retail floor from the workroom. “Wow, that looks stunning,” she said of the one-of-a-kind bridal corset, her voice laced with awe.
Paige glanced over her shoulder and grinned. “Thanks. Once I add the crystal and lace embellishments along the bodice, this bride is going to knock her groom’s pants off when he sees her in this corset.”
Raina laughed. “Not a bad way to start off a marriage.”
“What? By getting lucky?” Paige asked humorously as she set her needle and thread down on the nearby worktable that dominated the area.
“And being totally turned on by your new wife.”
“Speaking of getting turned on,” Paige said with a smirk as she eyed her cheerful friend. “You’re glowing and smiling all the time, so things with Logan must be good, yes?”
“Really good,” Raina admitted, her face flushing with happiness. “And I do have to say, it’s nice having sex on a regular basis,” she teased.
Paige sent her a mock glare. “Yeah, I wouldn’t know, so stop bragging,” she grumbled, even though she was genuinely thrilled that Raina had found a man who absolutely adored her. “What brings you by?”
“I have something for you,” Raina said and handed her an envelope with the word Welcome embossed in black across the front.
Paige’s eyes widened as she looked at the envelope. “Oh my God, is this an invitation to your wedding? I can’t believe you didn’t tell me…” Her words and excitement trailed off as she pulled out the card inside and read the message granting her a night at The Players Club, an exclusive, members-only sex club.
“Oh, wow,” she breathed in surprise and glanced back at Raina. “I thought—”
“If I was getting married, you’d know about it before I sent out invitations because you’d be my maid of honor,” Raina interrupted with a laugh. “Besides, I’m not even engaged yet. This invitation is for you,” Raina went on with a grin. “The Players Club is a place where you can get down and dirty and freaky with a stranger, indulge in a fantasy, or try a particular kink that has piqued your interest.”
“I have to say, that sounds very tempting.”
Oh, yes, Paige was definitely intrigued. It had been a year and a half since she’d been with a man. A year and a half since the morning Sawyer Burrows had shattered her heart with his betrayal. And the thought of indulging in a night of hot sex with an anonymous guy was incredibly appealing. She needed to do something to finally shake Sawyer from her mind and thoughts and let the painful past go so she could move on with her life.
Easier said than done, but an evening at The Players Club was a good start to putting an end to her dry spell.
“There is one thing you need to know.” Raina suddenly looked uncertain. “Logan told me that Sawyer is a member of The Players Club. Which, in my opinion, could work to your advantage if he’s there the night you decide to go.”
Paige frowned, not sure how she felt about running into a man she swore she hated yet who still had the ability to affect her on a physical level. Yeah, that part drove her absolutely crazy, but she was curious what Raina meant. “How so?”
“If he’s there, think of it as a bit of revenge.” Raina’s eyes danced with mischief.
“Flirt with other guys and enjoy yourself. Show Sawyer exactly what he’s been missing and what is no longer his. Men are such jealous, possessive creatures, and it’ll drive him nuts to see you with another man.”
The corner of Paige’s mouth curled into a smile as she thought about her friend’s suggestion. It had been too long since she’d felt desired and sexy.
Combine the bonus of possibly showing Sawyer that she was over him by letting him see her enjoy another man’s attention, and it really was a win-win situation.
Her decision made, she met Raina’s gaze and lifted her chin in determination.
“I’m totally down for that.”

Erika Wilde (aka Janelle Denison) is the USA Today bestselling author of over 50 contemporary romances for multiple print publishers.
So, why the new pen name?
As Janelle Denison I’ve always written sexy books, but lately my writing has taken on more erotic elements that I wanted to keep separate for readers because not everyone likes their reading material on the spicier, kinkier side of romance.   However, please be assured that even as Erika Wilde, you will still get an emotionally layered story with characters you’ll care about and fall in love with.   That is always my goal, whether I’m writing straight contemporary romances, or more erotically charged stories.
Currently, I’m working on The Marriage Diaries and making sure that Dean and Jillian enjoy exploring the more erotic side to their marriage.  The series will be on-going, with no foreseeable ending as of right now, for as long as readers want to be voyeurs to Dean and Jillian’s sizzling new relationship.
I’m also planning a spin-off series in the future, featuring the hot military men that work security for Dean at Noble and Associates.

Single father, Ryan McNamara, returns to the only place he'd ever been happy, Gypsy Beach. This time he's divorced, broken, but determined to make something of his life. Sienna Cooper is determined to forget Ryan, the last decade, and all of the hurt he'd left her with. She's got enough spunk and gypsy fire in her soul to make this work. She's going to run her grandmother's inn and make it a success. But when a chance encounter throws them back together, the passions ignite and the past doesn't feel so far out of reach. Can they rekindle the love they'd once had? Can he convince her that he never intends to walk away again? Will a potent dose of unending lust, a lifetime of love, and enough hot-blooded Gypsy spirit be enough to save them both?

The knowledge that this was all for Evie and for the life he wanted to build for her echoed in the choked whir of the engine of his truck. A new car could be purchased after he had his little girl safely with him and he’d turned his parents’ old beach house into their home.
To his parents’ fury, and mostly to annoy them, Ryan had refused to sell the beach house to help cover the cost of his father’s crimes. He’d paid off their mansion and managed to keep his dad out of jail, but the beach house was non-negotiable.
Unable to plan beyond the next demand or the next moment, he hadn’t known why it was so important then, but he was eternally thankful that he’d listened to his gut.
Alexa had thrown him out of their home in Buckhead the next week. He’d moved into his parent’s pool house after reminding his father that he’d effectively saved his ass, and began to formulate a plan to escape everything he’d ever really known.
The truck bumped and bounced over the massive tree roots that stuck out of the ground. Reminding himself that Sienna was long gone and that the Inn now had new owners was how he forced himself out of the truck. She’s probably off in California like she always wanted to be. She’s probably married to some lucky bastard without even half the problems you have. She deserves to be happy and fulfilled. Thoughts of Sienna lying in bed under some unnamed man, staring up at him with that hunger in her eyes, made him furious. He shook them away as he eased onto the porch. There was a large hole, the approximate shape of a boot, that had gone through the rotting wood. The decks and porches needed to come down first. He could do that today.
The door was open just a crack. It appeared too swollen to fully close. Ryan knocked, and it swung open further. He glanced around, not wanting to walk into someone else’s home. Not wanting to walk in at all.
The memories were far too potent. It even smelled like her grandmother’s cooking and that coffee she used to make them that tasted like heaven. The only thing sweeter was kissing it off of Sienna’s lips.
Suddenly, he heard a shrill scream from upstairs. Another echo of terror met him on the steps that he took three at a time. It sounded like someone was being attacked.
Working on instinct alone, he threw open one of the bedroom doors and raced towards the shrieking shouts of fear.
“Oh my God! This is horrible!” He heard her voice one half second before he flung open the bathroom door.
Another shriek ricocheted through his ears as Sienna grabbed an old hand towel and attempted to cover her absolutely spellbinding body. Shock rocketed through Ryan. He didn’t know what to think, but he was unable to do anything more than stare at her. She’d been beautiful when she was seventeen, but damn, she was a full-blown woman now, and he’d never seen anything more breathtaking.
Her beautiful, heart-shaped face was contorted in horrified shock. Her hair was soaking wet and did a decent job of covering her painfully hardened nipples. His eyes tracked downward without his permission. She’d covered the bottom half of her breasts, her slender waist, and her pussy with the towel, much to his chagrin. He saw half of a large tattoo that ran from her back over her luscious ass and down her right leg. Ryan ordered himself to turn around, but my God, she was exquisite. It was like being presented with a feast after a long, long famine.
“Sienna? I’m so sorry!” He finally managed to turn and tried not to look back.
“Ryan!” she finally gasped.
“Sienna, I had no idea you were here. I heard someone screaming. I’m so sorry!” He kept repeating the vow, but he couldn’t make sense of what had just happened himself.
“Go in there,” she ordered, and he assumed she pointed to the door. With a quick nod, he left the bathroom and closed the door behind him.

Book Tour for Far From Hollywood by Daisy Harris (Review & GIVEAWAY)

Fans of the m/m genre rejoice as the talented Daisy Harris is here with her latest tale of opposites attracting, Far From Hollywood.  Keep reading to get a tempting taste of this complicated romance, along with my impressions of it, and then add it to your bookshelf.  To celebrate this book make sure to fill out the form below for the chance to win 2 eBooks of choice from ARe Books Imprints too!

Pretending to be someone else is easy. The hard part is keeping it real.
Sheriff Jack Francis finds the last thing he would expect in the small town of Pookataw Valley, Idaho—a gorgeous yet troubled movie star on a bender. Though Jack is intrigued, he can’t afford to draw attention to his sexuality and risk a scandal.
Former teen idol Blake Tyler thinks hiding in Pookataw Valley is perfect—it’s isolated, beautiful, and comes with a sexy sheriff eager to share Blake’s bed. When Hollywood arrives in Pookataw Valley to film a reality show, Blake embraces the chance for a comeback, but Jack struggles to know what is real and what is faked for the camera.
If Jack wants to date America’s Sweetheart, he’ll have to make his private life public. Is he ready to share the spotlight?

Blake shivered in the April wind, rubbing his arms and wishing the sequins on his G-string weren’t chafing his ass. With quick and frozen fingers, he picked at his wedgie. Barefoot, he hopped from foot to foot on the fake wood porch where he was hiding from the party. Vail Village surrounded him and the Western facades were faded in the moonlight, but with a warm glow coming through their windows. If he didn’t get inside the party soon he’d get hypothermia, and any hope he had of avoiding a media frenzy would disappear.
He could imagine the headline—“Oh, how the mighty have fallen! Teen Scene star, Blake Tyler, raced to the hospital…after an orgy at elite Vail hotel.”
Of course, the party raging just on the other side of the sliding door wasn’t an orgy at all. The invite had said, “Dress like a porn star,” but while most of the B-list guests milling around with cocktails in their hands wore leisure suits or puffy jackets over shorts or bikinis, Blake had been an idiot. Trying to get attention, or maybe convince a director that he no longer was the seventeen-year old heartthrob from Teen Scene, Blake wore nothing but pink underwear and nipple tassels—a mistake on his part. On his nearly-thirty-year-old body, the sequins looked ridiculous.
Anyway, Blake should have known there’d be at least one gossip blogger at the party waiting to strike like a snake. Since Blake’s contract for the Teen Scene franchise included a morality clause which prohibited scandalous behavior and revealing his true sexuality, one picture of Blake in a sparkly G-string would be enough to ruin his whole career.
He peeked through the window, where the shades were parted just enough for Blake to see a prominent blogger stalking the room like a hyena. He wore a pair of aviator sunglasses and a crooked sneer.
Fuck. Blake couldn’t go back inside.
Glancing around at his options, he spotted a trellis not far from the porch. Though he might scrape his hands, Blake could probably climb down. Maybe the exercise would warm him, too.
Next to the lone lawn chair sat a plastic crate, and Blake opened it. Inside there was a pink Snuggie. He rolled his eyes. Perfect. I’ll match. Blake draped it around his shoulders and tied the sleeves around his neck.
Then, like a travesty of a superhero, Blake clambered onto the porch’s railing and stretched to reach the trellis nearby. It was close, but not close enough. Blake said a prayer and launched.
His fingers scraped wood, but with panted breaths he managed to get a hold of the trellis. Unfortunately, his Snuggie flapped in the wind and there wasn’t anything Blake could do about it.
Below in Vail Village, people were milling around in the streets, but Blake tried not to peer down. They probably couldn’t spot him in the dark. Instead, he focused on putting his toes into the prickly holes in the trellis and feeding his body lower, hand over hand. He told himself he was imagining the shouts and gasps he heard from below. After all, he could barely focus on anything besides the sound of his breath and his slow progression downward.
When a siren broke through the night, Blake couldn’t deny that someone must have reported they’d seen him. Hurrying, he shuffled lower, ignoring the splinters in his hands and the cuts on his feet. It wasn’t until an authoritative voice called through a loudspeaker, “We’re coming to help you, sir, stay where you are,” that Blake twisted and looked behind him.
A dozen cell phones were raised, their flashes sparkling like snowfall in the night. Above the other voices, Blake heard a squeal of, “Oh my God, it’s Blake Tyler!”
And then his arms went weak, and he fell.

As a fan of the m/m genre Ms. Harris has crafted many satisfying stories and while this one isn't her best it still has a nice bit of charm with a diverse cast of characters to bring small town living alive.  In this tale of opposites attracting the emotional angst runs high as one man is outed in an incident caught on video while the other is fighting to stay in the closet.  Together, will these two find HEA or will they let the outside world rule their future?

In an attempt to keep his sexuality secret young actor Blake only succeeded in making it even more public.  While waiting for the gossip to die down, and to figure out how to ressurect his career, he's hiding out far from Hollywood and licking his wounds in a self-destructive way that engendered a bit of sympathy.  Meeting the town's sheriff though changes his life irrevocably as he's forced into seeing himself in a whole new light, a light that he might like a whole lot better than what Hollywood sees.  Working with the town's youth theater is the first step in salvaging his career but also puts him in contact with a colorful and memorable cast of secondary characters that brought out a down to earth side to Blake.  Between sensual moments with Jack and his enjoyable interactions with the teen actors Blake is left wondering what will truly make him happy, but with his strong-willed agent desperate to gain him fame again, the sweet and sensual burgeoning relationship with the sheriff might be over before it starts.

Jack has been keeping a very big secret, not only from the denizens of the town he's sworn to protect but from his family as well.  He has his reasons for doing so as his sister is in a bitter custody battle with her stalker ex-husband and he doesn't want her custodial rights jeopardized.  Meeting the emotionally bruised actor Blake though puts his secret in jeopardy as the attraction between them is instantaneous.  He understands Blake's pain and wants to help him but staying in the closet is a necessity that adds strain to a relationship just starting out.  While I can understand Jack's fears, especially in small town America, it still left me frustrated.  I also appreciated his seeing the real Blake behind the glitz and glamour that was the impetus to Blake's finally discovering what he really wanted out of life.

There's a lot going on in this story with many characters coming and going that distracts a bit from the sweet and sensual relationship blossoming between Blake and Jack.  Their feelings about their sexuality sometimes became a bit too angsty and left me frustrated while still cheering them on as I liked both of them.  While the storyline involving Jack's sister was suspenseful it felt out of place amongst the charming, sweet, and sensual tone Ms. Harris set early on.  Overall though this was a quick read that fans of the m/m genre will find entertaining.

My rating for this is a B-

*I got this book from the author for review in exchange for my honest opinion.

Daisy Harris was born into the psychedelic wonder that was the 70s and has had an interesting life so far. She's been to Catholic school and Ramones concerts; danced to MC Hammer and Lady Gaga; and been a hair's breadth from shipwreck twice. (Three times, if you count sea kayaks!)
As far as Daisy's concerned, the best things in life happen by accident. Though she's gotten better at planning over the years, she still writes, lives and plays by the seat of her pants. Her books are a happy mix of romantic comedies and coming of age stories, more often than not, inspired by the great films of the 1980s.
Daisy lives in Seattle in a house full of dogs and children. When she's not writing gay romance, she can be found experimenting with new ways to cook kale. Every once in a while, she goes out to pay homage to the party gods of her youth—and maybe to find a little trouble.

PREVIOUS BOOKS IN THIS SERIES:  Sweet Perdition | Hot as Hades | Damned

As a reader obsessed with MC-themed romances I was thrilled to finally become acquainted with the Four Horseman MC and the sexy and compelling men and women who inhabit this exciting and sometimes stormy world.  Though I've not read the previous installments in this series I had no trouble getting quickly caught up in the dangerous past and unsettled future for the Club.  Once I reached the final page I couldn't wait to purchase the rest of the series as I became captivated by the exhilarating and dangerous world Ms. Rayne crafted.

After deadly events long ago left their Club in ruins, current President Captain seems to have the Club flourishing with men surrounding him who he knows he can count on.  Beside him throughout the years offering support has been the older woman, and wife of the Club's long dead President, Eddie.  From the moment he saw Eddie he wanted her but Club honor held him back and had him marrying another but never giving up his attraction for her.  He's waited patiently for the right time to claim her and after being goaded by his Brothers that time is now.  It will be a difficult battle to earn her love though as he'll be fighting the memories she has of her dead husband as well as threats from rivals to the Club.  It all leads to moments of unrelenting sexual tension as well as pulse pounding and dangerous encounters that bring him and Eddie closer together despite all the reasons why she thinks they shouldn't find HEA.  Captain's a super sexy guy full of guilt over the past and worries over the Club's future.  He was only a Prospect when everything went so wrong for the Club and is determined not to let it happen again, but with their ongoing war with the Raptors and with an upcoming visit from the FBI, he's on edge.  He's always been drawn to Eddie but knew he couldn't have her, even now he's hesitant to claim her as he doesn't want it seen as a betrayal to the Club.  Being with her brings moments of peace and happiness, along with a fun, flirty, and playful side that he can't show as President.  I loved seeing him and Eddie together, their flirty banter and crackling sexual chemistry, and found their older woman/younger man connection believable and refreshing.

Eddie may no longer be the official Queen Bee of the Club but she's a big part of its past and its future as the mother of current members.  Though she was devoted to her dead husband Joker she was always flattered by Captain's flirtations and couldn't help finding him sexy.  Now that she's free to accept his affections though she's torn over feelings of betrayal to Joker's memory as well as their age difference.  Her willpower will be tested as Captain unleashes a sensual onslaught that any woman would find hard to resist.  When her lucrative moonshine business captures the attention of rivals it will put her in extremely close quarters with Captain which allows them to explore years of pent-up feelings.  Once the dust settles nothing will ever be the same!

This was an exciting thrill-ride from the first page to the last.  Though it's the fourth book in the series it definitely stands on its own as it nicely balances the sweet and sexy romance with Club machinations that has readers discovering what brought the MC down and what dangers loom on the horizon.  The main couple is immensely likable as they engage in their sensual battle of wills with a believable connection that's been years in the making.  Surrounding them is an equally likable and diverse cast of secondary characters that keep the action rolling along and that have me excited for the future as their personal lives play out amidst a background of increasing danger.  With an exciting cliffhanger ending readers will be left counting down the days until we return to Hell in this exhilarating and sensual series!

My rating for this is an A-

*I got this book from the author for review in exchange for my honest opinion.

Cynthia Rayne is the author of the Amazon best-selling Four Horsemen MC series. Her first erotic book was written when she was thirteen. Of course, the most risqué scene involved kissing, but it was the talk of her middle school! She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in education and writes whenever she can. In her spare time, she enjoys dating, shopping, reading way too many romance novels, and drinking a truly obscene amount of coffee.
