They call us the Firework Girls.
I’m Sam. Let’s get one thing straight. Marriage is fine for some people, but it’s got nothing to do with me. If you knew the truth about my past, believe me, you’d understand.
But hey, I’m not complaining. I’ve got a good job. Great friends. And when I need a little something in the man department, well… I’ve never had any trouble getting that when I want it either.
Then Jack has to come along and screw it all up.
I never saw it coming. I mean, we’ve been friends for six years. Years. But in one moment… one gooseflesh-inducing, world tilting, alarming moment… it all starts to change.
Let me tell you something, the last thing in the world I wanted to do was freaking fall in love. But that Jack snuck right under my radar.
I’m not too happy about it either.
Not one damn bit.

EXCERPT:

(Sam’s POV)
“If I didn’t know better,” he says, giving me a gentle, teasing prod on the shoulder, “I’d think you were crying over some guy."
My eyes widen and my reaction comes through on my face before I can stop it. He straightens sharply, blinking in shock.
Oh god.
Still lying on the coffee table, I roll onto my side away from him, one arm dangling off, my face on the edge. Yeah. We just need to stop talking now and he needs to stop looking at me and I need to stop looking at him.
He’s quiet so long, I wonder if he’s going to leave. Part of me wants him to. Part of me needs him to stay. Because being in love is a special kind of messed up, I’m discovering.
I close my eyes. Why did he have to come now? Why did I have to fall in love with him?
I hear him get off the couch and walk around the table. It sounds like he’s sitting down right in front of me. When I open my eyes, he’s lying on the floor on his back, his body parallel to mine. His head is under mine, so I’m looking right at him.
There’s no escaping him now.
He’s wearing a pained expression I can’t interpret. “I’m sorry for teasing you,” he says. “Heartbreak sucks."
Hot tears make another appearance, dammit. He reaches up and wipes a tear from my cheek.
I give up.
My heart is aching. He’s killing me. I grab his hand and hang onto it as he cups my cheek and neck.
He follows the movement of my hand and his brows furrow slightly. He looks back to me, a question in his eyes. I’m too worn out and heartbroken to do anything but look back.
The furrow in his brows deepen. “Who,” he asks slowly, “is this guy?"
I press my lips together, the tears running fresh again. I can’t look away from him. I can’t hide it. Maybe this is what Ashley knew, and why she said to talk to him about it. I can’t hide this from him anyway.
A pained look crosses his face: confusion and disbelief. “Sam?” He chokes out my name, his voice a whisper.
It’s you. It’s you.
And I’m just one more woman he didn’t mean to make fall in love with him.
I give a weak shrug and find my voice at last. “Sorry,” I whisper. I didn’t mean to fall in love with Jack. I really didn't.
His eyes widen slightly in surprise and dawning realization.
It’s only inevitable now: his “we’ll always be friends” speech, or “I didn’t mean to give you the wrong idea” speech, or “I’m in love with Emily” speech. Part of me is cringing against the horrible words I know are coming. Part of me is willing to beg. Beg.
Part of me doesn’t want to go one second past this moment, because there’s not one single thing Jack can do that won’t terrify me.
He has that deer-caught-in-headlights look. He’s still processing what I’ve revealed and he has no idea what to do next. No good can come from this. God, why did I have to put the both of us in this awkward position?
This time, I do move, only half an inch, intending to get off the table and away, but his hand suddenly tightens against my face, keeping me here.
He’s looking at me differently now. Am I just imagining it? Am I reading too much into an expression like those ridiculous love-sick girls are so prone to do? There’s no denying I’m officially a ridiculous love-sick girl myself. But he’s looking at me almost the way he has in my dreams, like he wants me, too. But it’s even more than that. He looks hungry for me. I thought I knew every way Jack’s face could look, but I never could have imagined him looking like this.

The first time that Dr. Andy Kumar had seen Cadell Glynn-all six feet, four inches of him, tribal tattoos winding around his arms, fingertips deeply callused from years of pressing steel guitar strings, dressed in leather pants and a tee shirt ripped at the neck that let the tattoos on his muscular shoulders peek through, blue-tipped black hair spiraling in curls and swaying near his shoulders, and fear and helplessness filling his dark eyes at the sight of his sick child hooked up to two different IVs and crying-Andy had known that he was going to be trouble.
Mr. Glynn had interrogated Andy and the other surgeons, asking why, and when, and how, and would it hurt Emily too much.
He had calmed down some after that first week. Some.
After a few weeks, when Emily had stabilized, Mr. Glynn had backed off from the third degree, but he had begun to mention that there were other things in life outside the hospital. Restaurants.
Dancing. Concerts. For months.
She should not date him for so many reasons. So many.
Andy wished that the hot rock star daddy would quit asking her out.

Book Tour for Rocking Kin by Terri Anne Browning (REVIEW)

Rock star romances are my obsession, and when you add in the theme of second chances, I get completely giddy!  Keep reading to get a tempting glimpse of Rocking Kin by Terri Anne Browning, and its tale of the boy who left the love of his life behind when she needed him most who's trying to win her over once again.  You'll also get my impressions of this third installment in the Lucy & Harris series before adding it to your bookshelf!

With one promise her life was changed...
Saying goodbye to my mother also meant saying goodbye to my life in Virginia. After reluctantly making a promise to my mom, I was California bound with the father who I haven’t seen since I was four years old. I was miserable living under the same roof as my step-monster and the two step-bitches from hell. My only saving grace? Lucy Thornton, daughter to Demon’s Wings’ drummer, Jesse Thornton. Without her friendship—and her odd rocker family taking me in as one of their own—I was sure I would have lost my mind after the first week.
A blast from her past...
I never thought I would see Jace St. Charles again. Honestly, after the way he’d broken my heart, I would have been just fine without having to see his face for the rest of my life. With Lucy’s close friendship with Harris Cutter, owner of the hottest new club in SoCal and Jace’s new boss, I was forced to see that damn face often. Forced to see the way every girl seemed to trip over themselves to get close to him.
A second chance?
Being tossed into one situation after another with Jace made it hard to fight the fact that I wasn’t as immune to him as I wanted to be. But, damn it, I was only human and he was hell bent on winning me back.

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

Readers who enjoy second chance romances will find extra enjoyment in this tale being set in the rock star world. The chance to become a rock star is what separates Jace and Kin and leads to an angst-fueled reunion once tragedy sends her West to where Jace's band is gaining notoriety. Jace's attempts to reunite with the girl he's never stopped loving aren't made easy as Kin's carrying a lot of anger and feelings of betrayal as he left her when she needed him most. Moments of groveling and a few melodramatic twists and turns lead to a journey that's heartbreaking at times but ultimately satisfying as this is a likable couple easy to relate to.

Kin's gone through a lot after her mother's death took her away from the safety net of friends who are like family and set her down amongst a step-mother and step-sisters straight out of Cinderella's story. She's made to feel inferior as loneliness sets in before her introduction to Lucy, the adopted daughter of a rock star. They're a formidable pairing whose adventures are entertaining and put them close to the men they love. Kin's anger at Jace is palpable and at first her youth has her making him work to win her back, but their connection is crackling and had me rooting for him to quickly make amends as they're delightful together. Jace quickly realized he'd made a mistake in leaving her behind, but her showing up as his band is on the cusp of fame is a sign. He may not always say the right thing to Kin but it's clear how he feels. He's sexy and charming and in many words and deeds he makes his feelings for her clear, willing to brave all angst to win her back in a sweet and sensual journey to HEA.

As much as I enjoyed these two together, their romance wasn't in the forefront. Once again readers are given a glimpse into the complicated connection between Lucy and Harris as they wage an emotional battle full of push and pull. Lucy's a strong-willed girl who's sassy but loyal to those she cares about. Her feelings for Harris are hard to define but when he's close to her he's a different man and their scenes together were captivating. Along with this engaging couple comes a slew of secondary characters (mostly the members of Jace's band) that left an indelible mark on me as I long for their stories to be told. Ultimately, it makes for a story with a lot going on that left me wanting more of Jace and Kin. Their story is just a fraction of this overall book and by the end readers are still left with questions. On a whole though this is an emotional story full of highs and lows that had me wholeheartedly immersed in the outcome.

My rating for this is a B.

I have a temper. I’m angry. That’s a given.
How I take it out? At my job in the boxing room of our gym. I’ve spent over a year trying to harness it, but I wasn’t by myself.
Almost every night, like clockwork, he’s there on one side and I’m at the other. He is big, rugged, but handsome.
He’s also scary. Silent. Deadly.
When I hear the name Bullet, you would think I would have gone running in the other direction.
I didn’t. I should.
He has a past.
He has secrets. Danger. Pain. Sorrow.
Little did I know that it would just bring us closer together.

EXCERPT:

“Spar?” Wow. I’ve never actually done this. “You want me to hit you?” I pointed to him.
He crossed his arms. “Don’t worry, I can take a hit.” He smirked.
“Oh, I don’t doubt that.” I gave a small laugh.
“Are you scared of me?” He tilted his head slightly.
Yes. “No.” I cleared my throat.
“Look, I’m not going to go full-force on you, because obviously, I could just break you.” He pointed up and down my body. “I already know you can handle yourself, but it’s about having control and defending yourself properly, especially from someone tw—” his eyes roamed me again as he paused “—three times your size."
I rolled my eyes.
“Now, we’ll start off slow, get you used to it.” He got in his boxing stance, and so did I. “Now, I’m going to throw three jabs at you, and you’re going to block, okay?"
I nodded. His fists went flying at my arm as I held it up, the first two weren’t bad, but the last one stung hard on my forearm, but I took it.
“Did that hurt?"
Yes. “No."
His eyes flinched like he knew I was lying. “Again.” When he punched, he took in breaths through his nose and let out three sharp grunts. It took my mind somewhere else in the bedroom… until the three hits stung so hard on my arms, but I gritted my teeth and took it. “Did that hurt?"
Fuck yes. “No."
He let out a big sigh and put his arms down as he stood straight. “Listen, the thing about sparring, it’s about control and trust.” I swallowed. “If you aren’t honest with each other, it’s not safe for either of you. Sparring is a relationship. You have to be honest, and I know those hits hurt, because even though I was holding back, I know my hits and I wasn’t gentle."
Nothing like being caught in my own lies. “Okay, fine.” I sighed.
He got back in his stance and threw the same hits at me again. “Now, did that hurt?” He watched me and was staring me down.
“Yes.” I sighed.
“Good.”

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

Readers who enjoy unconventional romances will find themselves drawn to this emotionally intense tale of the deep connection between a brother and sister and the mysterious man who enters their lives. From a childhood of abuse Daze and Dem have risen from the ashes, making a life for themselves with only each other to count on. Outside forces soon intervene in a story full of twists and turns that have you on the edge of your seat.

Daze's life changed the day she realized her mother was abusing her brother. From that moment on anger became her constant companion, eating at her and keeping her from finding love. She's always set to explode, which is starting to affect her health, but she knows of no other way to live. Meeting the controlled and caring Bullet though brings moments of calm to her and leaves her conflicted as to their connection. Daze is a likable woman who's been through a lot. Her love for her brother was unwavering and she would do anything to protect him, becoming his parent at the age of 19 and guiding him to a better future. Theirs is a connection that's heartwarming as well as heartbreaking for all they've been through that binds them today. He's her weakness and his safety drags her down into a dark abyss whenever memories of their past become too much. When someone she cares about runs into trouble with a loan shark her life becomes even more complicated as Bullet's past collides with her wanting to help her friend and leaves her uncertain about her feelings for him.

Bullet comes on the scene full of sexiness and mystery. He's quiet yet commanding, bubbling with contained strength. He's immediately drawn to Daze and in many subtle ways tries to ease her pain. He's protective, comforting her at her darkest moments, and it endeared him to me. He's got a dark past of his own though, one he's ashamed of, one he's trying to keep in the past. But when Daze asks for his help, his past and their future becomes embroiled in a dangerous war that's bubbling over. Bullet's a compelling dichotomy of good and bad wrapped up in a sweet and sexy wrapper and I look forward to getting to know more about him.

This story may start off at a slow pace but quickly ramps up with action, conflict, and issues of trust as not everyone is who they appear. There's a forboding feeling permeating the story which leaves Daze and Dem's future in question. With its intriguing cast of characters there's never a dull moment as each is unique and adds another engaging piece to the puzzle. The romance is intense between Daze and Dem and had me rooting for them as they needed each other to heal. With unexpected twists and turns, and a jaw dropping encounter towards the end, this story will leave you clamoring for more and counting down the days until we revisit this unforgettable world.

My rating for this is an A-

Book Tour for Trapped With the Cyborg by Cara Bristol (Review & GIVEAWAY)

As a reader who's become captivated by the fight against injustice and the heroes fighting this war as seen throughout each installment in the Cy-Ops Sci-Fi Romance, today's a happy day.  Keep reading to get a tempting glimpse of Trapped With the Cyborg by Cara Bristol, along with my impressions of it, and learn even more through an interview with the sexy hero.  In honor of this fourth installment in the series make sure to fill out the form for the chance to win a $25 Amazon GC too!

GET TO KNOW MORE ABOUT SONNY MASTERS...Sonny Masters, first introduced to the Cy-Ops Sci-fi Romance series as a secondary character, stars as the hero of Trapped with the Cyborg. Cara Bristol sat down with him for a frank and open interview.
Cara: Could you tell me how you became a cyborg and what special abilities you have?
Sonny: I had enlisted in the Terran military. A microexplosive device blew up in my face, blinding me, and ending my military career. I underwent the transformation to cyborg at the Cybermed facility. My eyes are implants. I can see sharper than humans and even other cyborgs. Nanocytes—tiny robotic cells injected into my bloodstream—give me greater strength and endurance than ordinary malesNanos also speed healing if I’m injured.
Cyborgs can communicate telepathically with each other—which comes in handy on missions in enemy territory.
Cara: Excuse me for asking, but if nanos speed healing, what happened to your face?
Sonny: [Fingers a long scar cutting from his temple to his chin]: Nanos can’t heal injuries predating the transformation to cyborg. The scar is a souvenir of a misspent youth.
Cara: Misspent how?
Sonny: I was a criminal. A street thug. I acquired the scar in a fight. I probably would have ended up dead or in prison, but one day, I attacked the wrong man. I’d pegged him as an easy mark. [He laughs]. He beat the crap out me and then rescued me from the streets.
That’s one reason why I joined Cy-Ops—to try to do some good and repay a debt.
Cara: What can you tell me about your current Cy-Ops mission?
Sonny: Not much.
Cara: Classified?
Sonny: Yes, but even I don’t have the details yet. I’m supposed to meet my cyborg partner Manny, who will fill me in. All I know is we’re infiltrating the terrorists home planet, which makes it extremely dangerous. According to the Cy-Ops director, ‘the odds are against success.’ That’s code for a “suicide mission."
Cara: So you might not make it home alive?
Sonny: That’s correct.
Cara: So you came to the Darius 4 Pleasure resort for one last sexual fling?
Sonny: Darius 4 was a convenient rendezvous point to meet Manny. But as long as I’m here…I do have one night before we leave.  [He grins a wicked smile and his whole face lights up]. I’ve had my eye at the blonde on the bar.
Cara: Her? She just about took off the Malodonian’s arm when he made a pass at her.
Sonny: I like a woman who can take care of herself. If you don’t have any more questions, I think I’ll go meet her. [He shrugs]. Who knows? Maybe I’ll get lucky…

The only thing more dangerous than a suicide mission is falling in love...
Amanda Mansfield has faced challenges in her life: the disapproval of her critical father and the near-fatal accident that ended a promising military career and resulted in her transformation to cyborg. Now a Cyber Operations field agent, she volunteers to lead the most dangerous Cy-Ops mission ever: infiltrating enemy territory to find the secret hideaway of a terrorist mastermind. The last thing she needs is an added complication.
Like him. Sonny Masters. Her partner. A streetwise former thug turned cyber operative with a lethal grin. He can’t seem to understand she’s in charge and does not require his protection. He’s everything she dislikes—and everything her body wants.
If they can keep their hands off each other long enough to complete the mission, they might just get out alive…

EXCERPT:

He signaled the android and motioned to their empty glasses. “Bill these to my room."
“I’m more than capable of paying for my own drink.” She huffed.
He confirmed with the android. “My tab.” He motioned for Amanda to lead the way out of the lounge. “We’ll work out the details later. We can arm wrestle for it."
“Don’t think I couldn’t win."
“If let you."
“There’s a word for men like you."
“Gentlemanly?"
“Chauvinist."
“Why are you coming with me, then?"
“I didn’t say you don’t exude a certain raw, he-man charm."
Amusement rumbled up from his belly in an explosion of genuine enjoyment. Son of a bitch, he wished he had more time. A rare pang of regret shot through him. Cy-Ops had been good to him, and he didn’t regret this career path, considering what his alternatives might have been. The lives of those he’d helped—were better for it. But, yeah, sometimes he wished he had a woman waiting for him. He had a hunch from this point forward, when he pictured that imaginary woman, she would have Amanda’s face.
“Thank you,” he said, and rubbed the scar cutting a bare swath through facial stubble.
“What happened?” she asked.
“The scar?"
“Yes."
“I didn’t grow up in the best part of town. A gang of thugs who thought they were hot shit roamed the neighborhood, spoiling for a fight. They rarely had trouble starting one."
“You were attacked?"
He shook his head. “I was one of them.” He traced the thickened, puckered skin. “I deserved this.” He’d omitted he’d started the fight in defense of his sister. It mattered little his motives had been inculpable that time. One good deed did not unda multitude of bad ones. With his disreputable background, he hadn’t sought medical attention. His facial wound hadn’t healed properly, and he’d been left with a significant scar. Still, he’d survived life on the streets and emerged less scathed than some. Than his sister.
He fingered the souvenir of a misspent adolescence. “I’d like to say this ended my association, but I can’t. I was a slow learner, I guess.” Not to mention a thug. A gang member. A criminal.
“So, what got you out of it?” She halted and peered up at him. The top of her head would graze his chin if he were to hold her.Which he wanted to do. Horizontally, while she clenched around him. “I assume you’re out of it?"
“Yes. You’re not in any danger with me."
“You don’t worry me."
“Because you think you can kick my ass like you did the Malodonian?”

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

The Cy-Ops Sci-fi Romance series continues to entertain and enthrall as the war rages on. Spies and infiltration is becoming more important as a tool to victory which adds to the excitement and puts the good guys even more in harm's way. In this fourth installment in the series a woman trying to prove herself in a man's world finds herself drawn to a man full of guilt over his past who has her seeing herself in a whole new light. As their relationship heats up so too does the danger as friends and foes lead them on a journey full of twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Amanda's always tried to prove herself. With a demanding father pushing her she's always tried to be the best and be better than every man. After an accident led to her becoming Cyborg she's now more than ever out to prove she's the best as she's surrounded by men who are her equal in every way. With her father's continuous criticism in her head she concocts a plan that will set her apart from her teammates, giving her recognition, but might lead to her death. Meeting the man who's to be her back-up ends as a memorable one-night stand that changes her life, and her view of herself, irrevocably while complicating her plan. Sworn to do whatever necessary to get information from the son of a terrorist becomes more difficult as her heart wages war with her duty. Through a nefarious twist of fate she and Sonny end up running for their lives having to rely on each other which deepens their connection and has her dreaming of a future that might not happen if they're caught. Amanda is a likable character whose self-esteem has been bruised by her overly demanding father. She knows she's capable but is starting to realize nothing will ever be enough for him. Being with Sonny shows her that she's more than enough though, worthy of being loved just as she is. Being with him she's allowed to be a soldier as well as a woman and I enjoyed their burgeoning partnership.

Sonny grew up in a gritty neighborhood where war waged between gangs. His part in it made him feel important at first but tragedy soon led to guilt and set him on a new path. When a mission went awry he was made into a Cyborg and as he has no ties he's always the first to take on the dangerous missions. His latest mission has him thinking the worst though and embracing one last night of sexual delights. In the morning light everything changes as he discovers who his new partner is and realizes how much affect she's had on his heart. For the first time he's found a woman who matters and it complicates the mission as his jealousy has him wanting her all to himself. He respects her abilities and need to prove herself which had him standing aside and endeared him to me for that decision. When the unexpected happens they have to rely on each other to get to safety and complete their assignment and it's a true give and take as they support each other every step of the way. Sonny's an immensely likable man who's been weighed down by guilt. He's got strong protective instincts which have him wanting to protect Amanda at every turn, willing to sacrifice himself for her, but lets her be the one to take the lead as his equal when necessary. He's sweet, sexy, and charming with a gentlemanly way of talking dirty that put a smile on my face. They're a formidable couple and I enjoyed seeing their relationship evolve amidst all the danger and twists and turns that made their romance even more intense.

With such an unconventional first meeting you know that the romance to follow will be just as memorable...and thanks to Sonny and Amanda it is. From their steamy and erotically-charged first encounter theirs is a relationship constantly put to the test as the mission comes first. But as their hearts become embroiled the mission takes on a new purpose. With them running for their lives through exotic and barren scenery they discover new friends and foes while deepening their connection. As their journey comes closer to the end the suspense ramps up and leaves you on edge. The impact of this story on the overall story arc might not be as important as the other installments, but it was an exciting thrill ride that nicely balanced action with steamy erotic interludes. The main characters were likable and their pairing was perfection. Ms. Bristol has crafted another engaging tale full of political intrigue that leaves readers ready for more!

My rating for this is a B+/A-
