MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

As a disabled person I'm drawn to stories dealing with the issues surrounding living life in a body unknown to you at times.  And with my father's recent head injury I found myself even more engaged in the journey the once proud Michael takes towards recovery as it resonates very deeply in my own life for many reasons.

Grace has loved Michael since she was very young and each moment they were together is forever etched in her memory.  When she heard of his death a little of her died too.  After being shuffled off to the dower house by an uncaring and pompous brother-in-law life looks to be a lonely one until Nigel, the new Earl of Blackbourne, informs her of her impending marriage.  As her intended is nothing more than a friend to her she's desperate to end her engagement.  The arrival of a dark carriage might at first offer salvation but soon immerses her in the unknown as the return of her husband doesn't go as she dreamed it would.  Michael is back but he's changed and to reach HEA they'll both have to work hard and let love be their guide.

Michael went away to war with dreams of gallantry but returned lost and broken after a catastrophic head injury changed him irrevocably.  The once proud Earl now has trouble remembering words and events, is sometimes overcome with rage, and has excruciating headaches and memories from the war.  His body is like a stranger and it scares him.  It kept him from returning home as he wanted to hide from what he'd become.  He feels less than the man he once was and fears he won't be able to live up to his duties.  His fears have him pushing Grace away instead of holding her close as he wants to do.  It all leads to a marriage that was once so strong now rocky as insecurities from both of them weigh heavily.  To be the man Grace and his earldom needs he'll have to accept that which can't be changed and let Grace in completely as an equal so they can stand together in solidarity when the outside world comes to judge him.

Grace and Michael are a strong and compelling couple.  Grace is smart and caring and through everything her love for him never waned.  She felt frustrated and alienated by Michael's reliance on the stranger Tarik for help early on but it forced her to accept reality and from there on she was Michael's biggest champion.  She was loyal and dedicated and had more faith in Michael than he had in himself.  Michael's pain, physical and mental, was palpable.  It was easy to get caught up in his frustrations and self-loathing at what he's become.  The glimpses of the old Michael though remind us of what brought him together with Grace and give us hope for their future.  This story puts readers through the emotional wringer with lots of tears and a few smiles along the way.  It was both heartbreaking and heartwarming and I credit Ms. Cullen with its realism.  It's an emotionally draining journey that I feel privileged to have taken as the characters are richly depicted, their actions believable, and the message of love conquering all vividly witnessed.  Though this is the fourth installment in the Secrets & Seduction series it can be read on its own, but I hope to see this couple again in the future as they left an indelible mark on me.

Book Tour for Razor Wire by Lauren Gallagher (Review & GIVEAWAY)

As a fan of m/m reads I've become drawn to f/f reads but have become frustrated that they haven't gained in popularity as quickly as books featuring m/m loving.  Today I introduce you to a book that might change all that in that it tackles serious issues while keeping readers in a haze of sensuality.  Keep reading to get a glimpse of Razor Wire by Lauren Gallagher as well as learning my impressions of it and learn even more by visiting the other blogs hosting this tour.  You'll also learn a bit about the writing of f/f books from Ms. Gallagher and be entered into a giveaway for eBooks from her backlist and a $10 Riptide Publishing GC just for leaving a comment telling us which actresses you'd love to see playing the two leads of this story.

Here's a quick interview with Ms. Gallagher......

-Why has it taken so long for lesbian romances to enter the marketplace, especially after the explosion of m/m books onto the public's radar?
To be honest, I’m not a great source of information about the marketplace. LOL  I’m actually quite surprised that the lesbian romance market has grown so slowly compared to the gay romance. I can’t say I can explain it.
-When crafting a lesbian romance do you have to do anything differently from a m/m story?
Not really. I mean, the sex scenes will have obviously differences, but I think the genders are more alike than different. I don’t find hetero, gay, lesbian, or bi romances to be all that different from each other, aside from the obvious (i.e., homophobia not being a major issue in a hetero romance).
-What are the qualities of an ideal heroine?  Do those qualities change when it's two heroines in a story?
I think a heroine should be intelligent, competent, and responsible. i.e., her actions should be her own, and she should be able to think on her own two feet. I don’t think it changes when you have two heroines. Regardless of who she’s paired up with, I want to read (and write) about a woman who knows what she wants, admits when she screws up, and has a brain that isn’t activated deactivated based on the proximity to a penis.

Two women. One terrible crime. Zero allies.
After being raped by a superior officer, MA3 Kim Lockhoff wants to leave the whole thing in the past. A cop herself, she knows all too well that it’s her word—and slutty reputation—against that of a respected Navy officer.
MA2 Reese Marion, a tough cop hiding her own trauma behind a hard-as-nails exterior, has no patience for pretty little princesses who use their cleavage to win favor with the guys. But when Reese is partnered with Kim, she slowly realizes that reputations can lie. Kim is whip-smart, ambitious—and scared. The man who attacked her won’t let anything damage his career, least of all Kim . . . or the baby she’s carrying as a result.
Isolated on Okinawa, thousands of miles away from home, the two women lean hard on each other. But when Kim confides in Reese, she unwittingly puts her new lover—and both of their careers—in the line of fire. Now her attacker just might have the leverage he needs to keep her quiet for good.
MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

The realities of females in the military is vividly on display in this tale that immerses readers in intense emotions and unrelenting uncertainty and helplessness.  It's not always a feel-good story but is a very important one that needs to be told and is done so commendably.

The female characters in this male-dominated world are strong-willed and realistically portrayed to make them easy to relate to and to see yourself in their positions.  Surrounding these admirable women are a group of men bonded through the good old boy system.  It increased the feelings of helplessness as it seemed there was no one to count on.  Luckily there was one shining light that decided to be an officer and a gentleman among all the crude commentary and trash talking constantly heard to make the workplace such a hostile environment.  To survive, females either became friends or tore each other down with words.

Both Reese and Kim tried to live up to an image that they thought would keep them safe and help them be a part of the club.  Unfortunately, pretending to be someone else backfired for them in a very harsh way.  Once they finally chose to be themselves are they able to succeed.  Having a connection that's based on friendship also helps and in this story it nicely morphed into more.  Their sensual scenes were subtly erotic and reinforced their deep connection through the freeing feelings these interludes brought out.  The friends to lovers theme, which is a favorite of mine, was done beautifully here.  There was almost a lyrical and dream-like quality to it in fact.

From start to finish this was an engaging read with realistic and well-documented issues that the author didn't sugarcoat.  The characters were easy to relate to, made their feelings ours, and dealt with things in a believable way. My only criticism is in how quickly the story concluded.  I wish the actual trial and people's reactions to it had been addressed more fully.  This story on many levels had a HEA but the reality is that what befell these military women continues to happen and only in speaking out can the tide be turned.  On that level this story succeeds even further and I commend Ms. Gallagher on her bringing this serious issue to the forefront in such dramatic fashion.

My rating for this is an A-

Book Review for Nicely Naughty 2 by Nona Raines, Caitlyn Willows, & Rachell Nichole

All the Trimmings by Caitlyn Willows
When Chrissy agreed to housesit for her grandparents and prep the place for Christmas, she never imagined the icing on her cookies would be the twins next door. But they are hard-loving men who don’t play for keeps, and she's never played at all…until now.
Joe and Jess crave their neighbors’ cute granddaughter more than they can stand. She’s definitely a game changer they never imagined, blowing into their lives like the approaching winter storm, stirring up their wildest fantasies and making them want with an intensity hot enough to melt the fake icicles draped around her Grandma’s house.
Christmas with all the trimmings. Those were Grandma’s instructions. And while Chrissy knows she wasn’t referring to Chrissy laid out for Joe and Jess’s pleasure—or they hers—Grandma’s got some explaining of her own to do. Like how she knew about those dimples on the twin’s perfect backsides.
Christmas Candie by Nona Raines
Aidan Callahan loves Christmas. His family makes it a big celebration and he does his best to carry on the tradition. Every ornament on his huge Christmas tree has a story and holds a special memory. He’s been hooking up for six months with Val Stenzler and would like to get closer to her, including sharing his love of Christmas. But aside from their hot sex sessions, she holds him at arm’s length. What’s the problem?
Val hates Christmas. The most devastating, humiliating event of her life happened at Christmastime two years ago, and she’s still trying to get past it. There’s no room for fruitcake or mistletoe in her life. As far as she’s concerned, the holiday season can’t pass quickly enough.
Christmas suddenly becomes a lot more interesting when Val and Aidan meet Candie Hurley. She’s as sweet as her name, as sparkly as tinsel and as mysterious as the Northern Lights. Aidan and Val both fall under her spell, but will the night they spend with her bring them closer together or tear their relationship apart?
Gingerbread Photography by Rachell Nichole
Walker Savidge is one of FDNY’s Finest. He’s also the only openly bisexual fireman in the city. But his boyfriend, Ben Cook, is still very much in the closet, and not comfortable with his own sexual needs and desires. Every time they get close in public, Ben pulls away. Frustrated with his partner, Walker devises a plan to help Ben break out of his shell. The owner of Gingerbread Photography has been photographing the FDNY Firefighters for their calendar for years. She’s professional and sweet, and Walker knows she’ll immediately put Ben at ease. Now all he has to do is convince his lover to do a private x-rated, Xmas photo shoot.
Ben knows Walker is fed up with his hang-ups, but he can’t seem to help it. Every time he thinks he might be okay with announcing to the world that he also likes guys, the horrors of his high school locker room stop him. Growing up in a small community that wasn’t always supportive of homosexuality has forced Ben to hide that half of himself. He’d always dated girls before moving to the Big Apple and finding Walker. Now he’s trying to reconcile the two halves of himself and give Walker what he deserves. So when Walker suggests a photo shoot, Ben agrees, though the idea makes him squirm. He knows the week of Christmas break will be the best time for the shoot. He’s told his parents he won’t be home this year for Christmas, so he doesn’t have to answer awkward questions about his love life, or break Walker’s heart by not inviting him home for the holidays.
Lexie Ginger Rosamond is trying to survive as a NY photographer. But she’s dreading the upcoming holidays and her photo schedule. She’s reluctant to take on a last minute meeting with Walker and his boyfriend, but finally can’t deny the sultry voice of one of the sexiest firemen she’s ever met. But when Walker shows up at her studio with Ben, a young man she’s already met, and kissed, she doesn’t know what to do. As the photo shoot heats up, Walker jumps into the photos with Ben, and it’s almost more than she can bear. Until the two men ask her to join them in front of the camera instead of behind it. Tempted by their heat, and deciding maybe she can give herself a special treat this Christmas, Lexie agrees.

********************

Those looking for a bit of heat to warm up their cold winter nights will find this book all that and more.  In these three tales of ménage relationships readers get a bit of suspense, angst, heartbreak, and heartwarming interludes along with off the charts eroticism to keep you turning the pages.

From the very first story to the last these stories offer unique storylines, drool-worthy men, and numerous steamy encounters.  While I liked some better than others they all brought a bit of heat to a wintry day and kept me engaged in each character's outcome.  The story All the Trimmings is all about the sexiness when two gorgeous twin brothers who share everything become obsessed with the quiet teacher next door.  There's a bit of suspense thrown in that was left incomplete along with a villain whose demise occurs in the blink of an eye to leave me a bit frustrated.  The idea of Christmas was vividly displayed and the ménage relationship progressed in an unsurprising way, but the charm of the brothers and the likability of the heroine made this story enjoyable.  Christmas Candie brought up all sorts of emotions and went in some surprising directions.  It was sentimental at times and angsty in others.  The heroines weren't always likable but they were strong-willed survivalist who had been put through the emotional wringer.  The hero was delectable with sensual interludes that ran the gamut from f/m, f/f, to ménage with and ending that hinted at a HFN.  Christmas was for them a time for getting in touch with their emotions in some sentimental soul searching.  Gingerbread Photography left me hanging with many of its storylines and was the least warm and fuzzie of all the stories with all the issues it dealt with.  When a moment of bigotry leads to fireman Walker pulling his closeted boyfriend into the public eye it makes for lots of awkwardness and a struggle with accepting who you are.  I would've liked a better clue as to the incident that led to Walker becoming the poster boy for gay firemen.  It would've added a deeper layer of importance to the story and made Ben's concerns for coming out more understandable.  As it was I was often frustrated by Ben's issues with self-acceptance.  Lexie was a spunky heroine and I enjoyed her connection to Ben and Walker but I almost felt that the connection between her and Walker was more enjoyable on its own.  The warmth of the holidays was just hinted at here but everything culminated nicely in the end.

All in all this was an entertaining collection that kept me turning the pages in anticipation.  Fans of erotica and ménage relationships will find this a great stocking stuffer to warm up with quickly.  Here's to more naughtiness in the future!

My rating for this is a B.

*I got this book from the author for review in exchange for my honest opinion.
