Why I Write Rock Star Romance......
I write rock star romance for the same reasons readers read it: because, let’s face it, rock stars are hot as hell, and deep down, we all want to be that one special girl who captures the bad boy who could have it all. Rock stars have fame, money, legions of adoring fans. They have girls throwing themselves at their feet. They’re the kings of one-night stands. They’re the guys who refuse to get tied down—not by nine-to-five jobs, and certainly not by just any girl. They’re untamable, and if they love you—really love you—they’re going to love you forever. Being with a rock star means hearing a song on the radio and knowing it was written for you. It means standing in a sea of girls and having his eyes on you, because you are the one he’s singing to. It means going on tour, seeing the world, and then, at night, getting to curl up with a guy who is passionate, creative, and devoted. Rock stars aren’t just any guys, and they don’t fall for just any girl. I write their stories because it gives me, and my readers, a chance to be that lucky girl.

From the moment she saw Shawn Scarlett perform at a school talent show, Kit Larson has loved two things: the guitar, and the gorgeous, green-eyed boy who inspired her to play. But one careless night in high school shatters her hope of ever being more than a notch on his bedpost.
Six years, two bands, and one mostly-mended heart later, Kit’s about to make her rock star dreams a reality as the new guitarist for Shawn’s band, The Last Ones to Know. He may not remember their reckless night together, but Kit has never forgotten… and she’s determined to make him eat his heart out.
The release of their new album means a month cooped up on a tour bus, sleeping inches away from the ridiculously sexy musician she’s never quite gotten over. And as Kit gets to know the real Shawn—not Shawn Scarlett, the rock god, the player—their attraction becomes too hot to resist. But the past is paved with secrets, and when they finally surface, Kit could lose everything: the band, the music, her dreams… and Shawn.

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

Into the crowded genre of rock star romances comes this gem of a series that beautifully balances likable and realistic characters with the chaotic and sensual world of music.  Add in a compelling main storyline along with engaging secondary ones and you end up with a story you never want to end.  Ms. Shaw shows true talent with this series that continues to shine and at the conclusion of this story I'm already counting down the days until the next installment.

Kit is the lone girl in a family of strong men whose protectiveness borders on smothering.  Each brother is loving with interactions that are sweet, playful and heartwarming but leave her frustrated as she wants to live her life by her own rules.  This family dynamic was immensely appealing and led to one of my favorite secondary storylines of Kit's twin brother Kale hiding his homosexuality and being attracted to a new friend of Kit's who's everything Kale wishes he was.  Kit and Kale are so supportive of each other and are always watchful of the other's hearts and dreams which Kit will need as she joins a band on the brink of stardom.  Though she longs to take this crazy ride she knows her heart will be in jeopardy as one of the guitarists is the man she's had a crush on since she was a teen and who she gave her virginity to.  That life-altering moment left her heart bruised as he never called her again but she won't let it stand in her way of being a guitarist with a successful band.  She always knew she was meant for something bigger and this is her chance.  Being around Shawn brings out a myriad of emotions in her, some heartbreaking and some juvenile, as he constantly shakes her self-esteem.  These moments of juvenile behavior sometimes frustrated me as everything would've been resolved much sooner if she'd just spoken of her feelings out loud instead of always waiting on him. Through it all though she remains a strong-willed woman in a man's world who gives as good as she gets and whose witty and flirty banter made her even more of a badass rocker!

Shawn has always been popular with the ladies but music is what holds his heart.  One fateful night he meets a girl who names him as the reason she became a guitarist which made for an instantaneous connection that never truly went away despite his ruining the memory through his unintentional callousness.  With Kit joining the band emotional complications arise as she brings out the best and the worst in him.  He's the creative one in the band, the one who writes the lyrics and crafts the music, and collaborating with Kit makes their songs masterful.  Since their first meeting the sexual tension between them is off the charts and though they start off as friends it's clear they're destined to be more.  It's a rocky journey though as he's better at writing about emotions than acting on them out loud.  There's lots of hurt feelings and lingering anger over the past, but unlikely allies help him right past wrongs to reach an immensely satisfying HEA.  Through it all I found myself drawn to Shawn and his sweet yet charming nature.  He might not always make the right choice but his heart is always in the right place.

This was a delightful read from start to finish with memorable main characters and equally engaging secondary ones.  The secondary characters are some we know and love along with a few new ones whose stories I long to hear.  Each character though feels like family with interactions that brought a tear to my eye as well as a smile to my face.  Shawn and Kit are combustible as even when they're apart you can still feel their crackling connection.  Kit's my favorite kind of heroine with her tell it like it is attitude and the unconditional support she gives to those she loves.  Shawn's strong and sexy and not afraid to show his softer side that's an appealing dichotomy to his bad boy rocker persona.  The rock 'n roll world is vividly depicted with all its sensuality and energy and these scenes immersed me in the story even further.  While this book can definitely stand on its own, with such likable characters and engaging storylines you won't want to miss a single moment.  Ms. Shaw's Mayhem series continues to impress with its engaging characters and storytelling and I recommend it highly to those looking for a memorable read that you'll be thinking about long after the final page is turned!

My rating for this is an A.
