A-SIST
Anthropomorphic Sentient Individualized Servile uniT
Rogan is a robot. More specifically, he is an Asist – a personalized humanoid servant that provides protection, assistance, and companionship for a lonely young woman living on her own in the city. Chloe is trying to get her big break, singing at bars and clubs all over the city at night while she pays the bills as a substitute teacher during the day. Ever since she activated him many months ago, Rogan has been her beautiful, dependable, obedient, dead-eyed security blanket.
One morning she is shocked when he disobeys a direct command in an attempt to please her and his dull artificial eyes flash a hint of something new. Is this the result of the adaptive Asist servility programming or is Rogan actually thinking? Can a robot think? Can a robot feel?
As Chloe struggles with these thoughts she is blindsided by the singular Niven Adams, a handsome, confident man with the voice of an angel who is everything she’s ever wanted in a boyfriend. He’s the perfect guy for her, except for one problem. Niven doesn’t approve of Asists and takes an immediate dislike to Rogan. As Niven charms his way deeper and deeper into Chloe’s heart, Rogan tries to convince her that he is more than a mass-produced disposable servant.
With Rogan doing everything in his power to prove that his thoughts and feelings are real and Niven trying to persuade her to abandon her robot and have a normal human relationship, Chloe is trapped between the two things that mean the most to her. Does she embrace her relationship with the blond newcomer, or face that her Asist’s feelings may be more than features of his programming?
What really makes a person a person?
Is it a ticking muscle inside their chest, or is it something more?

Book Tour for The Theory of Deviance by Rebecca Grace Allen (Review)

Readers looking for a thought provoking and steamy romance will find themselves quickly caught up in all the highs and lows of this unique trio of individuals all trying to find themselves and their place in this world.  Keep reading to get a tempting taste of The Theory of Deviance by Rebecca Grace Allen and its tale of being fulfilled while living up to other's perceptions, along with my impressions of it, then add it to your bookshelf.  You'll also get a glimpse of the previous books in the Portland Rebels series with introductions to the other people in this intensely emotional group of friends and family whose stories you'll want to read!

Deviance is unacceptable. It's taboo. And it's the one thing he's always wanted.
Portland Rebels, Book 3
Painful shyness isn't the only reason Mikey Pelletier is a twenty-five-year-old virgin. Between working for his parents and volunteering at his church, he neither has the time nor the inclination to admit his bisexuality to the world—or to himself.
A visit from Krissy Porter will hopefully fix everything. After three months of chatting with her, Mikey's got one carefully planned week to win her heart and lose his V-card. He's hoping he can pull it off, even with her roommate along for the ride.
Krissy has been drawn to Mikey for a while. He's so easygoing, she thinks he could be the calm in her storm. But there's an extra complication when she comes to visit: her friend-with-benefits, "hetero-flexible" roommate, Rafe.
During a week of revelations, intimacy, and kink, Krissy and Rafe become the angel and devil on Mikey's shoulders, tempting him in different directions. And all three of them discover that a week of pure deviance can lead to the most uncontrollable emotion of all: love.
Warning: This book contains innocent board game-playing that takes a sexy turn, use of recreational substances, back-door action, and some smokin' hot threesomes. Plus, scenes of inner-demon slaying. Fans and tissues advised.

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

On first glance the premise of this book hints at all sorts of decadent delights, but with each turn of the page you realize there's unexpected emotional depth regarding a person's self-image and the power of outside forces in guiding your life.  It's ultimately a thought provoking premise that left me exhausted as each character was put through the wringer and was left bruised by fear, uncertainty, and loneliness.  Mikey, Krissy, and Rafe are merely pawns in the game of life and it's only when they're together that they're whole.  Only together does their inner strength come shining through and it's what had me cheering by the satisfying conclusion.

Mikey's a quiet young man, always has been even as his brothers were acting out, but he's starting to feel frustrated and fearful over feelings he can't control. These feelings are ones he's desperately been trying to bury out of fear for his family's business and of disappointing those closest to him including God.  Fear has him hiding from life and has him still a virgin at 25.  Meeting the free-spirited Krissy though gives him a glimpse of a carefree life, one unburdened by guilt if he's just brave enough to grab it.  Rafe is an unexpected complication that becomes harder to ignore as he's a vital part to his burgeoning relationship with Krissy and when he's facing the loss of both of them he'll finally face long-hidden truths head-on in their journey to HEA.  Mikey's conflict over homosexuality and religion is vividly and powerfully depicted with an argument that will get people talking and ultimately cheering.  Though his is a unique relationship with Krissy and Rafe it's a heartwarming one that empowers each of them in an uplifting conclusion.

Krissy's a breath of fresh air in this story, full of energy that has her vibrating. This energy isn't necessarily a good thing though as she suffers from bipolar disorder.  After a complete breakdown she's still picking up the pieces, fearful of losing herself to the abyss but desperate to live life to the fullest.  Throughout the story readers join her on her emotional rollercoaster ride, sensing her breakdown on the horizon, and feeling frustrated that there's no help for her until she helps herself.  Krissy's a sweet girl who loves with all her heart and is supportive of the men in her life who care for her just as much.  There's a child-like quality to her as well that makes for an intriguing dichotomy as she's a voracious sex kitten too.  Her battle with her disease is vividly depicted, the realism of it hitting me hard as I have a sibling going through the same highs and lows.  By the end I was proud of the changes she made, empowered by the strength it took to admit she was sick.

Rafe is the strong but silent type carrying a lot of anger over his parents disowning him.  He too has issues with the church and feelings of being unworthy of love.  He's drawn to Krissy and Mikey but doesn't see himself as important to their relationship despite how well he takes care of Krissy by reminding her to take her meds and supporting her when things turn dark.  It's a sweet side that shines through alongside a sexy side that helps his partners embrace their desires in a burgeoning relationship becoming stronger with each steamy encounter.  Rafe's an immensely likable character whose stoicism had me wanting to hug him as it's clear how hurt he is by his past.

This was a powerful story, emotionally intense, that had me on edge waiting for Krissy to combust and for everyone's feelings to come to a head.  Issues regarding religion, mental disorders, and homosexuality are on vivid and realistic display to exhaust readers by the end.  There are many erotic encounters to steam up the pages, nicely spaced to not feel redundant. Considering the issues being dealt with here too I expected more angst, but every heartache seemed to get wrapped up easily with a big bow once this trio got together.  On a whole I found this a satisfying read with larger than life characters dealing with profound issues.  Though it's the third installment in the Portland Rebels series it stands strongly on its own guided by the talented hand of Ms. Allen

My rating for this is a B+

Sometimes A + B = O. Yes. Oh, yes. Just like that.

The Hierarchy of Needs
Portland Rebels Book 2
Jamie Matthews is stuck in a rut. After hitting a wall with her dream career, she’s back in her hometown, living a life as monotonous as swimming laps in the neighborhood pool.
Being surrounded by her perfect brothers is a painful reminder of her failure to launch. The last bonfire of the summer is an ideal way to let off steam, especially when she runs into Dean Trescott, the playboy friend she had one hot-as-hell night with back in high school.
Since the day Dean met Jamie, he’s loved her beauty, talent, and smile that lit up the whole damn block. But dating isn’t an option. She has a bright future ahead of her, and he refuses to chain her to his—helping run the family business that’s barely staying afloat.
A “what-happens-in-Vegas” weekend was supposed to get their craving for each other out of their systems. But neither counted on the past repeating itself, drawing them together in even hotter and dirtier ways and dangling the possibility they might both be able to get exactly what they need...
Warning: A friends-to-lovers twice over story that contains some hot 'n' heavy kissing in the waves, hair pulling, and a man who knows how to use his hands. It may also feature a few practical jokes--only the fun kind, of course.

Natalia Grekov was born to win Olympic gold. As the USA’s top gymnast, she’s calm, confident and ready to make her country proud in just two short months. MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

With the 2016 Rio Olympics blaring on the television behind me, I found this romance to be a timely read and one that pulled me in wholeheartedly from the first page to the last.  The trials and tribulations of becoming a world-class gymnast, the negative aspects surrounding the sport, and a steamy romance between two immensely likable people all make for an entertaining read that left me cheering once the final page was turned.

Spencer Russell was once at the top of the gymnastic world until a career-ending injury crushed his dreams.  Not wanting to leave the sport he loves behind him completely has him joining the coaching staff of a prominent coach despite his hatred of the man's techniques.  Spencer believes in hard work but also the fun and joy of doing gymnastics.  He promotes a healthy mind and body too which puts him at odds with the man who's marring the sport he would do anything for and ultimately leads to a life-altering decision.  When not at odds with his boss Spencer is becoming increasingly attracted to the new gymnast, Natalia Grekov, who's unlike any woman he's been with before. Spencer enjoys women, has no intention of settling down, and until now has had no problem getting women.  With Natalia though, he's having to work to get her attention as she's devoted herself to the sport and wants no distractions. Though they start off as friends, the flirtiness and sexual tension soon becomes too much and leads to clandestine encounters over their forbidden romance. Spencer's an immensely likable hero whose joy for, and love of, the sport shines through.  He's sweet, charming, and playful, with a talent for dirty talk at the most unexpected moments.  He doubted he'd ever find love but is the first to recognize it and say it out loud.  He's supportive of Natalia every step of the way, giving her confidence and sacrificing everything when her place on the team is threatened.  He's the quintessential hero and is still starring in many of my late night dreams!

Natalia's never wanted anything other than an Olympic gold medal and is willing to sacrifice much to get there.  As the latest addition to Filipek's Gym she's witnessed gymnasts being demoralized over their weight as well as emotionally abused, but as she sticks up for herself it puts her in the crosshairs and leaves her position on the Olympic team on rocky ground.  Becoming entangled with a coach isn't helping matters, especially as she doesn't want any distractions keeping her from her goal, but Spencer's a temptation she can't keep ignoring. When he discovers a secret that might keep her from making the team he shows an unexpected chivalrous side by helping her, but their close encounters lead to so much more.  Natalia's a strong-willed woman, very focused, and she and her family have sacrificed much in her journey to the Olympics.  Spencer starts off as her friend but their connection quickly evolves into scorching encounters and feelings she doesn't want to label.  When their relationship is discovered she can no longer run from their feelings as it leads to harsh words and changes for both of them amidst the energy and suspense of the Olympics.

This was an engaging story that vividly depicted the excitement and uncertainties of an Olympic year.  The highs and lows, sacrifices and fears, of those striving to make it to the Olympics pulls readers in and keeps them on the edge of their seats.  Add in a forbidden romance between a coach and an athlete and the stakes end up even higher in a sensual friends to lovers romance.  Natalia and Spencer are both strong-willed and immensely appealing with a connection that crackles, making them a dynamic duo.  Their encounters teem with sexual tension, scorching interludes, and witty and playful banter that leads to inspired dirty talk.  Alongside this unforgettable main couple comes an equally entertaining cast of secondary characters whose stories are just bursting to be released.  From the formerly paired gymnasts of Jared and Peyton, who are now bitter enemies, to single father Rourke whose loneliness still weighs on me, and together they all promise lots of engaging storytelling to come. Readers who enjoy sports-themed romances will find much to enjoy in this first installment in the Flipped series as it perfectly balances love and the stresses of athletics.  It's a delightful start that left me cheering with the final turn of the page and counting down the days until the next installment.

My rating for this book is an A.

Book Spotlight on Every Time with a Highlander by Gwyn Cready (GIVEAWAY)

Fans of historical romances can rejoice with the release of this time travel romance that perfectly balances the sensual and suspenseful interactions of two opposites attracting.  Keep reading to get a tempting glimpse of Every Time with a Highlander by Gwyn Cready, and its battle of a strong-willed woman allying herself with an unexpected hero, then add it to your bookshelf.  In honor of this third installment in the Sirens of the Scottish Borderlands series make sure to fill out the form below for the chance to win a print copy of the first book in this series too!

She can work her magic on any man
In a quest to bring peace to her beloved Scottish borderlands, fortune-teller and spy Undine Douglas agrees to marry a savage English colonel. Desperate to delay the wedding long enough to undermine the army’s plans, Undine casts a spell to summon help and unexpectedly finds herself under the imperious gaze of the handsome and talented Michael Kent, twenty-first century British theater director.
But in this production, he commands the action
Though he abandoned acting years ago, Michael will play whatever part it takes to guard Undine’s safety—he’s used to managing London’s egocentric actors and high-handed patrons, after all. But not even Shakespeare could have foreseen the sparks that fly when the colonel’s plans force Undine and Michael into the roles of their lifetimes.

EXCERPT:

"Where am I, and what the hell am I doing here?"
Undine stood arrow straight against the closed door, hands behind her on the knob, unmoved by his demand. “Keep your voice down,” she said in a heated whisper.
“Keep my voice down?! I’m trying to keep my lunch down."
“He’s just outside the door."
“Good, because if you try anything else, I’ll want help. What is this? Where am I?"
She sighed. “You’re in the home of Colonel Lord Bridgewater."
“Colonel Lord Bridgewater?” For an instant, a potential explanation appeared in his head. “So this is a costume party?"
“A masque?” She chuckled. “No, but the metaphor is apt. No one here is who they truly seem."
“Do you mind telling me what I’m doing here?"
“I’ve told you,” she said. “You are here to prevent him from marrying me?"
“Have you considered just saying no?"
“Aye,” she said archly. “I have."
The woman was infuriating. “And?"
She shifted. “This is what needs to be done."
“Oh, well, if this is what needs to be done, then by all means, make use of me however you see fit. Your wish is my command."
“Sarcasm is not an attractive quality in a priest."
“How’s anger?"
“You have nothing to be angry about,” she said. “You’ll perform your duty to me, which is to say not performing your duty at the altar, and you shall be returned unscathed."
“I have already been ‘scathed,’ madam. What was in the potion?"
’Tis of no concern to you, and I warn you not to repeat the word."
“You’re quite the taskmaster. I think I like my odds with the cravat guy better.” He reached past her for the knob.
She jerked backward, trapping his hand against a captivating bottom.
They stood eye to eye. “I suggest,” she said, unblinking, “you move that."
He considered several responses—verbal and isometric—before tugging his arm free. He adjusted the burlap of his sleeve. “You do realize, I hope, I am entirely capable of moving you from the door."
“The Barbary sun is a hot one."
A knock sounded, and she started. If it was Bridgewater, she didn’t just dislike the man. She was afraid of him.
“Undine,” a voice called. It was Bridgewater.
She looked at Michael, and neither replied.
“How long does he think a confession takes?” Michael said under his breath. “Sixty seconds?"
“I’m sure the only times he’s confessed, it’s been a lie."
“Undine?” Bridgewater repeated. “Are you there? Undine?"
“Jesus,” Michael said, “what is his problem?"
Undine rolled her eyes. “Love."
“Undine.” The knob rattled harder. “Answer me."
“Oh, for Christ’s sake.” Michael lifted her by the waist and placed her to the side. Then he opened the door, blocking Bridgewater’s entry with his body. “The walls of the confessional may not be breached, sir,” he said hotly. “What do you want?"
Bridgewater looked as if he’d been slapped. Michael wished the man felt as if he’d been slapped as well.
“I beg your pardon.” Splotches of indignation appeared above his lordship’s cravat.
’Tis not my pardon you must beg but the Lord’s! We are deep in the work of unblackening her soul. Pray give us the time we require.” Michael shut the door with a bang.
“Well done,” she said when the footsteps faded. “Though ‘unblackening’ was a bit much."
“Says the woman threatening Barbary dehydration. I could have invited him in."
“There’s no need to be rude."
Rude? You think I’m being rude? I have no idea where I am or why I’m here."
“Are you a bit slow?” she said. “We’ve covered this ground before."
“Yes, I know I’m somehow supposed to keep you from your fiancé, though why, I have no idea. And I know you drugged me with the”—she gave him a piercing look—“liquid. But I don’t know why you picked me for this or where we are or—most important—why I should put up with any of it."
“Father, this will no doubt violate every belief you have about the world, but I offer no apology for upending those narrow-minded views. I am a naiad—to the simpleminded, a witch—though if you repeat that to anyone, you’ll regret it."
Michael needed to sit, but his legs wouldn’t bend. His only experience with witches was with the perennially overacted ones in Macbeth and the hay fever–suffering Corelza in Trevor Quince, Boy Wizard, the movie franchise which had funded his early retirement. None of them looked like a Greek fury crossed with Grace Kelly.
He rubbed his forehead. “A witch?"
“Naiad, if you please. And you are in 1706."
He felt as if he were standing on a spinning carousel with no pole to cling to. The world spun with stomach-churning speed, and no matter how he turned, he couldn’t find a way to get his feet under him. 1706? 1706 was Congreve and Queen Anne, garters and frock coats--
Oh God, I am in 1706.
