EXCERPT:

The rain started lightly, I thought Kiri would wake soon so I pulled back into the shadows.  Instead, she seemed to nuzzle into her shoulder.
Kiri whimpered and I returned my gaze to her.  She seemed upset, but then again because of me nightmares should be part of her life for a while now.  I cursed myself for my part in that.  Resigned in the realization Kiri belonged far away from me, I turned to go.
“Nye.”
I turned to see she was still in a deep sleep.  And she was dreaming of me?
My heart fluttered.  Could she really be dreaming about me?  No, she must be having a nightmare.  Her lips had curled into a smile.
“Nye, please.”
Please.  Please what?  Whatever it was, I was willing to do it.  She was pleading to me.  How could I help her?  How could I save her?
Then the ice came.  My heart hardened seeing her tears.  They ran from her eyes like rats from a ship.  What had I done?  What was she remembering?  Suddenly the heavy rain arrived, dumping itself from the low hanging clouds and Kiri woke with a start.  She didn’t rush for shelter.  Instead, she rested her arms on her knees and buried her face in her hands.
“Why Goddamn it?” she screamed as she raised her head to the heavens.  “Why can’t you even allow me a dream?  Is it not bad enough you let me meet him and refuse to allow me even the slightest touch?  Fine.  You win.  Leaving me in a dying body with only his memory to haunt me forever.
“Fuck.  You,” she screamed with her middle fingers raised up to the air.  “You are a vengeful God.”
What the heck was she talkin’ about?
“Your own son found forgiveness for Mary Magdalene, am I not as worthy?”
She continued her criticism of God.  I was afraid Gabriel or some other angel would come down to the roof and smite her.  Who was she talking about?  The normal was so intimate with his touch, I couldn’t imagine stopping, but then again, I had turned down her request of one night.
“What do you want from me?” she screamed into the night air as the lightning and thunder started to roll together.
The sky became light as day as the nearby windows shook.
“Now you want to kill me.  Why?  So I have no chance of being with Nye.”
I stood up right as another bolt of lightning struck, and I saw Kiri’s eyes.  She was staring straight at me.  She didn’t jump in fear instead she shook her head and turned towards her apartment.  With one hand firmly on doorknob, she punched the door once, and returned her gaze to the emptying clouds.
“That wasn’t even fair,” she said, her voice sounded defeated.
“Kiri,” I eked.  “Kiri, wait.”
“Voices,” she growled.  “Now you have me hearing voices.”
I leapt so I was standing right behind her and placed my hand on her shoulder.
“What is it you want, Kiri?”
“For you to be real.”
“I am real.”
Her wet, silken, skin goose bumped under my hand.
“You can’t be,” she said, still facing the door.  “You said you’d never come back.  That I’d never see you again.  And here I am.  Imagining your face, hearing your voice.  Wishing your hand…was…”
“Wishing my hand was what?”
“Really there, that…I could taste…”
I spun her around and brought her lips to mine.  As our mouths fused, her body went lax between my arms.  Her fingers slid softly down my cheeks.  When my tongue touched Kiri’s, a moan came from deep inside her.  I held her right hand in mine and rose it above her head to lock her wrist against the wall.  My body fell against her soft frame.  I could feel myself harden, and God forgive me I rubbed the darn thing against Kiri.  The light strokes had me returning her moan.
When our lips finally parted, she looked up at me and trembled.  The rain streamed down her face.  When the lightning flashed again, her eyes lit up as she looked at me.
“Don’t wake me,” she begged, pulling me to her again.
