I don’t make a secret of the fact I love movies. Comedy. Drama. Horror. Animated. Action. Doesn’t matter. If you have a fascinating story to tell, I’m all ears. The latest book in my Geek Kink series, Break Me In, gave me a chance to play around with my love of movies because both of my characters are just as fascinated with them as well.
This made for the perfect opportunity for me to play around and have some fun. As many times as I’ve read the book (through writing the story and edits) I’m not sure I can account for every single movie reference or nod that was made.
Some references are blatant:
His explicit ranting was interspersed with the lyrics of The Time Warp from The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Think that one is pretty self-explanatory. *g*
Some are subtle:
The gas-station burritos, slushies and Corn Nuts he’d lived on during his cross-country trek suddenly didn’t seem as appetizing as they once had.
The mention of “gas station burritos, slushies and Corn Nuts” is a nod toward the movie Heathers. If you’re unfamiliar with this 1988 movie, one the characters is obsessed with Corn Nuts and the two main characters have a conversation in a gas station, about burritos, slushies and (you guessed it) Corn Nuts.
There is even a movie reference made which ultimately becomes an anchor for the couple’s relationship. But to find out what that one is, you’ll have to read the book.

Elena avoids relationships by using her flogger as a shield. Alex is struggling with substance abuse and Elena will do nearly anything to help him conquer his demons, even risk losing him forever. When he comes home, whole and healthy, he raises the stakes by requesting their friendship turn to a D/s bond. His submission will change their dynamic forever. She convinces herself it’s just sex. Love and desire aren’t part of the equation.
Under Elena’s reverent command, Alex finds a comfort he’s always yearned for. He’s happier than ever as he spends his days slinging coffee and his nights bound and collared. Submitting to Elena exposes more than his strengths—it reveals a powerful attraction. Most of all, it uncovers their passionate love. He’s ready to convince her there’s no reason to mask her feelings, but his efforts are derailed when his toxic past resurfaces to annihilate their future.

EXCERPT:

“Alex!”
Genevieve Lambert, the owner of the Southern Ridge Grill, swung her bag over her shoulder as she stepped off the curb. “I know Gatlin Falls is a small town, but stand there long enough and you’re liable to cause a traffic snarl.” Her hand brushed against his forearm. The musical tones of her voice didn’t help comfort him. “You all right, sugar? You are as white as a ghost.”
A bead of sweat trickled down his spine. Doubt thickened his throat, making speech nearly impossible. He shouldn’t be here. It was too goddamn soon. He spun on his heel, desperate to get away.
A gentle, soothing hand pressed against his shoulder stopped him, encouraging him to turn around. “Running won’t help. That demon of yours is just going to taunt you until you face it down and squash it.”
“I thought I was ready.”
“You wouldn’t be here if you weren’t. How about one of my strawberry tarts to give you a little courage?”
“I think I’ve gained thirty pounds since I started rehab. Food replacement therapy. Exchange one vice for another.”
Her studious gaze gave him the once-over. “You look good, sugar. Healthy. A well-fed man who keeps himself in shape is an addiction I don’t mind fueling.” Genevieve reached into her tote and pulled out a large box. “Pick your poison. One missing tart won’t hurt my pockets.”
A colorful assortment of pastries greeted him as she lifted the lid. His stomach growled. The gas-station burritos, slushies and Corn Nuts he’d lived on during his cross-country trek suddenly didn’t seem as appetizing as they once had. Unable to resist the lure, he lifted out a strawberry tart. The combination of sweet tartness and the melt-in-your-mouth crust exploded against his tongue as he bit into the pastry.
It tasted of home.

  2. I appreciate a character's flaws - it makes them more real. I think I begin to resent the flaws if they don't make an effort to do something about them, though. Thanks for the giveaway! :-)

  5. In response to your question, I would have to say that I agree with you and prefer characters with flaws over characters who appear to be perfect. Characters with flaws are definitely more relatable and that is what does it for me!
