Melody’s work as a hospice nurse both gives her life purpose and rips her heart out when her patients die. Her latest client left her his lakeside home. After years of living in foster homes, Melody seizes the opportunity for a real home.
Her happy residence comes to an abrupt halt when her benefactor’s missing nephew, Levi, shows up. A bomb shattered his leg and life, which left him in need of a safe place to figure out the rest of his life. The will leaves the house to both of them, but only if they cohabit for a year. Otherwise, the house goes to a third party.
Melody detests Levi for never writing or visiting his dying uncle. Levi considers Melody little more than a gold digger similar to his ex-wife. There’s no way he’ll let her have his inheritance.

EXCERPT:

He was an attractive man and a young one too. When was the last time she’d met a man under sixty-five? If she didn’t count her former roommate’s fiancé and jerky friend, it had been months. It could be the reason behind her over reaction to a man who was her nemesis. He’s the enemy. Overlook the nice packaging, the strong jaw, the ripped arms, and the attitude. He’s trouble with a capital T. Don’t even let him get near the front door.
Charmer’s ears went up, hearing something, and he dashed in the direction of Levi. The leash slipped out of Melody’s hands as her canine loped across the yard. Would he welcome the man with a lopsided doggy grin or roll over on his back for a belly rub? With her luck, Charmer would deliver the house key. Then again, maybe the lawyer already had.
Her eyes drifted over to the lawyer, hoping Mr. Douglas would enlighten her about the nature of the visit, although she had her suspicions.
Levi’s voice had her attention whipping back to the man. “Hey, what’s the stupid dog doing?”
Her dog balanced on three legs while he hiked the fourth, thoroughly drenching Levi’s leg. Worried he might hurt her dog, she rushed forward, knelt beside the dog, and wrapped her arms protectively around his body. “Please don’t hurt him. He’s old and already has enough trouble walking with his arthritis.” Her eyes searched Levi’s face. Would he take out his anger on her instead?

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

Two people scarred by their pasts are brought together through the machinations of a cantankerous old man from beyond the grave in this sweet and sentimental romance that touches on a few topical issues too.  Ms. Wyatt nicely balances all this amongst two very likable and realistic characters with the help of an endearing cast of secondary characters, including Charmer the dog who does his best to help two bitter people find their HEA.

Melody is a hospice nurse who finds it easy to connect to her patients but hard to form a bond with others after a childhood full of numerous uncaring foster parents.  Her own mother even set her up for heartache through broken promises and tarnished dreams that have left Melody doubting herself when it comes to love.  She always longed for a family, and with her recent patient offering a place in his home, she thought she'd finally found one.  With his death she's once again feeling lost but with his nephew coming to stay Melody will once again find herself nursing another as their mutually bruised hearts can only be healed through their burgeoning relationship and trust.  Melody was a strong-willed woman with very low self-esteem who was easy to relate to. Though she wanted to be angry at Levi for not coming home sooner her kind heart wouldn't allow her to punish him more than he's punishing himself.  She was a woman deserving of love who wore her heart on her sleeve waiting for her Prince Charming.

Levi had a rough upbringing too until he ended up at his uncle's house.  There he found a sense of belonging until a woman's lies had him walking away in anger.  Time in the military, and the loss of his leg, were an eye opening experience that left him with regrets but trying to move on with the changes his body's undergone.  A duplicitous woman, and his own low self-esteem, have left him a bit cold and untrusting though.  Spending time with Melody, per his uncle's will, shows him a woman he can finally count on, but will he let his own self-esteem issues keep him from happiness or will his sensual battle with Melody end in victory?  Levi's been through a lot in his life so his initial standoffishness was understandable.  His playful yet subtle flirtations towards Melody endeared him to me though and had me rooting for him as his impressions of himself grew through Melody's responses to his sensual onslaught.  He might've been mired in pity at the start of the story but quickly gained confidence through his interactions with Melody.

With its appealing characters and their flirty and heartfelt interactions teeming with sexual tension I found myself easily immersed in this romantic tale of self-acceptance and finding love in the unlikeliest of places.  The lead characters are strong-willed but traverse a slow journey to HEA because of deep-seated trust issues that left me aching for them both.  Small town living, with all its inherent colorful denizens, is charmingly depicted and helped push the main couple together.  Topical issues dealing with problems in the foster care system, issues of returning veterans, along with animal adoption are seamlessly incorporated into this tale to bind the main couple together even more.  Overall it makes for a sweet and heartwarming tale that starts off a bit slowly but quickly captivates readers.

My rating for this is a B.

*I got this book from the author for review in exchange for my honest opinion.

AUTHOR INFO:

Morgan K Wyatt believes in happy endings. When things don’t end well, she holds to the familiar Indian saying: If things don’t work out, then it’s not the end because everything works out in the end. She considers herself living proof after escaping an abusive marriage; she found and married her soul mate. While not every day is sunshine and roses, she writes about the possibility of flowers and chance meetings between strangers.
Her reputation as a plant rescuer has people dropping sick and dying plants at her house, and then speeding off in the night. The magic ingredient that brings the plants back to life is love and Miracl-gro. Morgan would love to hear from you. If you have a name for a character, cute dog pics, or gardening info, even better.

    2. Several items including a follow up to the sweet romance, The Soul Mate. The sequel is The Love Talisman. I also have a second in the Suspicious Circumstances series. Next out is a dating book for women closer to fifty than forty. Something I know more than a little bit about.

    1. I always believed my deceased grandmother brought my husband and I together. ( I know it seems odd, but she promised to look after all her grandchildren. Her haunting would be the kind and thoughtful kind.) Why couldn't the uncle be as invested in the outcome of his nephew's love life.

    1. Hi Eva,
I probably get more out of the reviews, than the potential readers do.It reminds me of all the college English courses I took when the professor would tell everyone what the author meant. I often wondered if the author did mean that. LOL The Inheritance is a simple tale about the power of love in all its forms.

    1. Hi Patrick,
It's a fun all seasons read, although I set it in late summer/early fall. Because I live in the snowbelt, I never find the idea of snow all that romantic. :) Thanks for commenting.
