Book Release Blast for Shadows by Laramie Briscoe (REVIEW)……..

Readers will quickly be drawn to this tale of a single father trying to do right by his family, while trying to reach his own HEA, in this New Adult romance with an unforgettable heroine trying to make her own dreams come true under the weight of family obligations.  Keep reading to get a tempting taste of Shadows by Laramie Briscoe, along with getting my impressions of it, then add this entertaining and emotional read to your bookshelf too!

From USA Today and Wall Street Journal Best Selling author Laramie comes a single-dad, MMA love story. This small-town, standalone romance is packed full of emotion and steam.
"What I want you to do, Isabella, is find out what his real name is..."
Those were the words spoken to me when I sat down to learn about my final grade in college.
They not only shocked me, but changed the trajectory of my life.
Shadows Sampson has always been bigger than life on the campus of our college. Most of the time seemed as if he's older than the rest of us. Like he carries the weight of the world on his shoulders.
When I get close? I find out there's more to it than I ever bargained for.
And when the truth comes out; against my will - I hope I can get the forgiveness I so desperately want.
"You've gotta win this fight. We can't push rent back again..."
Those words from my sister's mouth put an exclamation point on how bad our situation is.
Especially after I lost the fight of my life. The one that was going to get us out of this apartment building, the one that was going to put us on a path we'd only dreamed about.
But me? I'd lost the fight, my confidence, and the motivation for the life I'd always wanted.
Until a baby I'd fathered was left at my doorstep, and a seriously hot girl from my college started paying attention to me. With that girl? I fall hard, only to find out I'm the subject of a story for her final grade.
Turns out, that's my motivation.
Quitting isn't an option. Not until my knuckles are bloody and not one person stands in the way of what I want.

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

Upon reading the synopsis of this book, I knew I was hooked!  From its familiar yet satisfying romance of a single father trying to take care of family while weighed down by obligations and fate, to his instant attraction to a woman on a mission she wants no part of while trying to live her own life, I became fully invested and utterly charmed with each turn of the page.  The characters became like family, the emotions real and heartfelt in their intensity, in a story that had me rooting for the main couple every step of the way.

Set in the often high pressure world of college, readers are introduced to MMA fighter Shadows Sampson, a man who's tough as nails on the outside.  He shows himself to be scary yet determined to achieve the goals he sets himself.  Behind his calm and cool exterior though is a life in chaos, changed a few months prior after the loss of a big fight and becoming the father of a brand new baby.  Life has now turned complicated for him, endless bills and heavy obligations, trying to do whatever necessary to make a better life for those who are now counting on him.  Shadows is a delicious hero, one with a big and loving heart who's his own biggest critic...constantly hating himself for not always getting what he wants for others.  He's wearing himself down into the ground and my heart ached for all the weight pulling him under.  For him, life has become a constant race, a physically and emotionally draining race...and I was rooting for him to find even one moment of happiness along the way.  That happiness comes the moment he meets Bella, a young woman he saves while working at a college bar.  There's an immediate connection between the two, a sense of love and support that warmed my heart and put a smile on my face.  There's lots of secrets between the two of them though, secrets that kept me on the edge of my seat while waiting for them to see what's really important.

Isabella Winters is an immensely appealing heroine, one who's more than she seems. She's getting close to graduating with a degree in journalism, becoming the first in her family to graduate at all, and because of that she's feeling the pressure...courtesy of them.  Add in demands from her professor (who I had issues with) to uncover what MMA fighter Shadows is hiding from the world and you'll end up with a powerful romance, one that will pull at the heartstrings.  Throughout their time together they both need to decide who they're going to be and how they're going to achieve their desires.  They need to balance wanting to be there for others while living a life for themselves, something that will take heartfelt talks and a few tears along the way to achieve.

This was ultimately a romance that brought together two very appealing people, two people on the cusp of adulthood who are trying to achieve their own dreams while also being weighed down by obligations from others.  From the very start this was a sweet and sensual romance, one full of angst and secrets and lies that brought this couple together in a mature way full of heartfelt talks and truths.  Being together brought out the best in them, endeared them to me, and strengthened this tale based on a familiar premise.

My rating for this is a B+

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

Ms. Kaye's Warrior Fight Club series comes to a rousing end with this emotional tale of two wounded warriors finding healing through their long-simmering attraction (leading to a one night stand) and a motorcycle accident he needs help recovering from!  Theirs is a journey that put them, and readers, through the wringer in a story that pulled at my heartstrings and brought a tear or two to my eye along the way. Aiding them in their journey was a cast of appealing secondary characters, ones seen in previous books, who are a supportive group with their subtle matchmaking ways and heartwarming words of wisdom.  Together they made this a powerful read that is an unforgettable entry in the series.

Daniela England is a nurse who lost her husband six years ago and has kept her heart closed off ever since.  The loss of her husband isn't the only thing weighing on her though as there's all the other soldiers she couldn't save who still haunt her today. Being a member of the fight club helps keep her demons at bay, but it also keeps her in view of a man who's gotten under her skin and won't let go.  Though she's scared of putting her heart on the line she's having trouble denying the attraction she has for him in a relationship full of push and pull moments that play out as the story progresses. Sean Riddick is a veteran too...and now a firefighter who finds himself constantly coming into contact with Dani.  His own difficult past has him concerned about his ability to make a future, a HEA with someone else, because of an abusive childhood and the loss of fellow soldiers over the years that has him feeling like a failure.  Being part of the fight club helps him work out some of his anger but it's the heartfelt talks he and Dani soon start engaging in once he starts his rehabilitation that finally puts them on the road to HEA and an ending that made me feel good.

On a whole this was a well-crafted romance, a slow-burn tale full of push/pull moments that made for a story teeming with sexual tension. Dani and Sean were crackling together in interactions that felt more like foreplay at times.  Balancing out the combustible moments between them were scenes of deep talks that had them laying their emotions bare and had me rooting for them from the first page to the last. Though this wasn't a unique storyline it was an emotionally engaging one that warmed my heart and captivated my soul through the power of love flowing between Dani and Sean.

My rating for this is an A-

Dear Readers,
I’m so excited to share my new standalone romance, Fighting the Fire! This is the fourth book in my Warrior Fight Club contemporary romance series, which mixes military and sports romance elements to tell the story of an MMA training club which creates a found family for veterans transitioning to civilian life and dealing with their war-borne demons. In Fighting the Fire, Sean and Daniela are two of my favorite characters I've ever written--they're both strong, loyal, snarky, and hiding some pretty deep hurts that in the end make them so perfect for each other. And all that frenemies tension makes the chemistry between them hot AF! I hope you love them as much as I do!
xx Laura Kaye

EXCERPT:

As Daniela dropped her bag on the bleachers at Full Contact MMA, her bad day had her sighing. “Maybe I just need to beat the crap out of something—or someone.”
A warm breath at her ear was all the warning she got. “Got anyone in mind, Daniela?”
Sean Riddick said her name as if his tongue caressed every letter, and she cursed the shiver that raced up her spine—the shiver that resulted from knowing exactly how damn good his tongue felt. She turned slowly, lazily, as if she were bored to tears. No way was she letting him know he got to her. So she gave him a once-over that she hoped read as full of disdain.
Even though, damn. DAMN.
So tall she had to tilt her head back to roll her eyes at him. Dark hair cut short because it curled when he let it get even a little length to it. With scars near his eye and hairline and a nose that had been broken, his face was too beat up to be handsome. But it was even more interesting for having character—of the fearless, I-run-into-burning-buildings-to-save-people-and-sometimes- get-hurt-doing-it variety. And then there were the tattoos—on his neck, shoulders, arms, the back of one hand, not to mention the hard muscles underneath, because of course the guy was freaking cut, with shoulders like mountains and thighs like tree trunks. Sean oozed unquestionable strength and a fierce masculinity.
He knew he looked good.
He wasn’t wrong. Damn him.
And damn her for being stupid enough to find out just how good he was. Just that once.
But it’d been enough to keep her body attuned to him even as her head screamed been there, done that, shouldn’t have done it the first time and ain’t doing it again. Dani sniffed. “Not you.”
His grin was pure wicked sin. “You sure about that?”
She sighed. “Absolutely.”
He gave a low chuckle. “Well, you’re welcome to try to beat the shit out of me any time.”
“Don’t you have anyone else to irritate?”
“Oh, I irritate you, do I?” he asked, dropping his bag to the floor. He winked at their friend, Tara. “Hey, T.”
“Hey, Sean,” Tara said, amusement plain in her voice.
Just then, one of the few other women who belonged to WFC walked through the door. “Oh, Jayne’s here,” Dani said, surprised because her friend hadn’t attended in weeks.
Without another word to Sean, Dani and Tara left him to greet her.
Halfway across the gym, Tara leaned in close. “Seriously, do you really dislike Riddick or are the two of you in a perpetual state of foreplay?”
Dani threw her a look that made the other woman chuckle. “Ugh, you really can’t tell?”
Tara twisted her lips and shook her head. “Nope. But something’s different between you guys lately, and I’m dying to know the story.”
“There’s no story,” Dani said. Probably too fast. Definitely too fast, given that Tara had also picked up on the heightened friction between them. Because, of course, there was a big freaking story.
So. Big.

Book Release Blitz for Downfall by Jay Crownover (REVIEW)

In a tale of opposites attracting readers will have their heartstrings pulled in every direction as a woman hurt by her past, made to feel worthless, finds a savior in the tatted-up man next door looking to make something of himself.  Keep reading to get a tempting taste of Downfall by Jay Crownover, along with my impressions of the unforgettable read, then add this book set in the world of The Point to your bookshelf too!

Solomon Sanders doesn’t have time to fall in love. Until a stunning, skittish, single mother forces him to pause and recognize just how empty and hollow his busy life has become.
From the start, it’s been ingrained in Solo’s DNA to fight.
Fight for what he believes is right.
Fight for the people he loves.
Fight for the traces of good in a place which tends to be filled with a variety of bad.
Fight for survival, so at some point, his life will quiet down and find a normal pace.
He wasn’t ready for the impact his secretive, shy, obviously out of place new neighbor was going to have on him. And never in a million years was he prepared to fall head over heels for her and her young daughter.
Now, he’s facing the most important, and the hardest fight he’s ever fought… the battle to win Orley’s damaged heart.
Orley Vincent’s heart is full of fear, leaving no space for love. Until a big, brash, brawler of a man forces his way in and makes her realize facing her fears is the only way she can ever be free.
From the start, Orley was groomed to believe she wasn’t good enough.
She wasn’t the perfect daughter. Or student. Or girlfriend.
But, she has always been the best mother she could be to her daughter, Noble.
Keeping Noble safe has always been the one thing she was determined to do, which ironically, is how she ended up on the wrong side of the tracks, living next door to an unlikely hero. Orley’s a woman on the run. She had no idea her frantic sprint was going to land her in the tattooed arms of a man ready to teach her how to fight for herself… and for love.

EXCERPT:

“What did I tell you about lurking around my place, Skinner? I don’t fucking like it.” The guy’s voice was a low growl. Intimidating without even trying. “I don’t fucking like you.”
Out of habit, I reached back and covered Noble’s ears with my hands. She wasn’t new to foul language, but I didn’t need her repeating this stranger’s garbage words, which she absolutely would at the most inopportune moment.
My eyes widened as he shook the lurker hard enough to snap his head back and forth comically. The smaller man whimpered and clutched at the hands locked on the front of his dirty coat.
“Let me go, Solo. I was just having some fun. She’s a prissy bitch. You’ve seen her walking around here like her shit don’t stink.” The pleading was wasted. The larger man was clearly unmoved.
The new arrival’s massive arms tensed and flexed as he practically threw the other man on the ground. I noticed he was dressed in nothing more than a dark t-shirt even though it was chilly outside. The short sleeves showed off more than his impressive build. In the faded street lights, I could hardly make out the designs that were inked over almost every visible inch of skin. That wasn’t an uncommon look in this neighborhood. Gang tattoos, prison tattoos, and general outsiders who called these streets home tended to rock some serious ink, but this guy’s looked more deliberate and artistic than a simple statement piece.
As soon as my attacker was back on the ground, the bigger guy stepped forward. I reflexively cringed as he lowered his big, booted foot down on the other man’s unprotected private parts. A wail of agony shrieked through the air, and I realized belatedly I should be hauling ass for my apartment, not standing around waiting to see how this brutal display of street justice played out.
I clutched Noble’s hand in mine and briskly jogged the last few yards to my apartment building. I lifted Noble over the sleeping homeless man and hustled up the five flights of stairs to our floor. The elevator had been broken since before we’d moved in, not that I would dare let either of us get trapped in a small place with anyone from this complex.
I was a panting, quaking mess when I finally slammed the door. I dropped to my knees and pulled my daughter into my arms, covering her tear-streaked face in kisses and whispering soothing words over and over again.
There was no way this could be our new normal.
But it was.
Noble deserved so much better than this.
I sighed, pushing her hair off her precious face. “You know what, sweets?” She blinked big, watery blue eyes at me and shook her head. “I think we both need cake.”
She nodded and cuddled close to me.
It wouldn’t occur to me until much later that I hadn’t bothered to shout a thank you or shown any appreciation at all to my savior. I had no clue if he was any better than the scumbag who had grabbed me, but he had at least kept my daughter safe, so I owed him, even if he was one of countless things in this forever dark place that scared the life out of me.
People didn’t help other people in this neighborhood… but he had stopped and helped me, whether his intentions were altruistic or not.
And I owed him… well… at the very least, more than a piece of cake.

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

As a fan of Ms. Crownover’s gritty and emotionally intense storytelling style, each new release of hers is reason to celebrate.  This new release, set in the world of The Point series, once again pulled at my heartstrings by introducing me to two people who couldn’t be any more different but are oh so right together.  With pasts that have left indelible marks they’re both just trying to do the best they can for those they love, getting through one day at a time and rolling with the punches that life constantly threw at them.  As a couple they were a formidable pairing teeming with sensuality while warming my heart for how supportive they were to each other in a romance full of heart and soul.

Orley Vincent’s clearly out of her element the moment readers meet her, a classy and secretive young woman who’s doing all she can to keep her daughter happy and safe.  Money’s tight which means living in an apartment in a sketchy part of town.  Orley sees danger everywhere, and unfortunately has a scary run-in or two early on, but gets to see the protective side of this area when her sexy and sweet muscle-bound neighbor comes to her rescue to show her how wrong her preconceived notions are.  She soon discovers a group of people who end up being more like family who finally give her a reason to trust.  After a childhood of feeling invisible and doing all she could for attention, the birth of her daughter became a defining moment that led to betrayal and showed her that you can only count on yourself.  Coming from a world of wealth had her thinking that that was the good side of life, but her colorful and eclectic neighbors soon prove themselves to her wholeheartedly by helping her when she needed help most.  Solo’s also just what she needed as the men in her life have thus far been nothing but a disappointment.  Solo becomes someone she can lean on and ask for help without feeling obligated.  Together they were combustible, a heartwarming pairing of support, that had me rooting for them every step of the way.  Orley’s a relatable heroine who’s a fish out of water but just trying to survive.  She has a kind heart and though she’s a bit timid early on she becomes more empowered as the story progresses.  She feels overwhelmed and intimidated by Solo at first but the more he proves himself to her the more she wants to really start letting loose...with him.  On a whole their journey to HEA was a delightful one, made even more powerful when her past comes knocking to try to ruin the familial bond forming between them and her daughter which brings out Solo’s protective side one more time.

Solomon Sanders is a big brute of a man, strong yet sexy, a hard worker and loving son who spares little time for himself.  He’s taking mechanic classes, fixing classic cars, and fighting in the underground fight scene which leaves him exhausted at the end of the day.  He’s a caring man, a loving son who works himself to the bone to care for his disabled mother.  He may be a bit rough around the edges but it’s clear he can’t help but assist others as he’s seen as the neighborhood’s guardian.  As a younger man he once thought of leaving this gritty town behind, but he’s made a life for himself and made connections in this diamond in the rough town.  He’s beloved by all for his helping with no expectation of being paid back and I too saw him as the quintessential book boyfriend because of it.  Solo grew up with only his mother to count on so it’s understandable that he’s particularly drawn to single mother Orley early on. He knows he should stay away from her but she gives him a reason to make himself happy for a change.  For far too long he’s been devoted to making others happy and it’s time he thought of what he wants for a change.  He and Orley were a crackling couple with their mutual longing clearly on display.  The moment he claimed her as his own was the moment he knew he’d die to protect her as she came to mean everything to him and I lovec him all the more for all the words and deeds done in her name.

On a whole, this was a decadently delightful story of neighbors-becoming lovers as these two opposites became utterly attracted to each other the moment they laid eyes on each other.  They’ve both been battered by their pasts but it’s only made them stronger and more worthy of their hard-fought HEA.  Seeing Orley and Solo together made me smile, they both brought a bit of lightness to the other in a heartwarming and sensual romance.  Alongside this endearing main couple was a cast of secondary characters readers have seen before while reading Ms. Crownover’s previous gritty series and it felt like seeing family again.  They’re a supportive group to this newly-formed couple and their unique talents (that are on the edge of legal) will be especially needed when Solo once again sets out to rescue Orley and her daughter.  Noble, Orley’s daughter, was also a breath of fresh air and I loved the softer side she brought out in Solo.  His father wasn’t there when he was a child but being around Noble brought out an endearing fatherly-side to him that made my uterus hurt.  Readers will find themselves quickly captivated by this engaging balance of suspense and romance with a couple that you’ll be rooting for from start to finish.

My rating for this is an A.

Book Tour for My Little Secret by Ember Leigh (REVIEW)

A forbidden romance between an MMA fighter and the sister of his biggest rival drives this sexy and fast-paced story that will keep readers frantically turning the pages.  Keep reading to get a tempting taste of My Little Secret by Ember Leigh, along with getting my impressions of this exhilarating read, then add this third installment in The Breaking Series to your bookshelf!

HAWK
Focus is my middle name. But Sadie makes me forget why I’m in town, what I’m here to win, why it all matters. That alone should tell me to stay the hell away. But I need more of her, even though I know she’s hiding something from me.I’ll do anything to keep her by my side. Just how far I’ll go will be my little secret.
SADIE
I’ve had my eye on Hawk for a long time now. Let’s just call him my MMA celebrity dream lover. So when I find myself in Denver at the same time as him, at the same bar as him…I have to say hi. But I sure as hell shouldn’t take it any farther than that. Because he’s in town for one reason: to fight my brother in the biggest televised MMA match of the year.
I can be good… Except I can’t.
But maybe I can make Hawk my little secret.

EXCERPT:

“Now I gotta tell you…” I swiped my key at room 909 and paused, stepping closer to her. “Or maybe I should warn you. Once you step inside this room...”
She lifted a brow.
“I’m going to kiss you.”
Her pink lips curved into a smile. “Only inside there?”
“I’ve wanted to since the bar. But I don’t like to make a display.”
Her gaze turned sultry and soft. “Fair enough. I’ll agree to that.”
I pushed the door open, and we both watched it swing back, revealing my suite—the tiny foyer and side table, the living area, the doorway leading to the bedroom. When our gazes met, it felt playful. “You first,” I said.
“No, you.”
I grinned and then sauntered into the foyer. She watched me from the hallway for a moment, then strolled across the threshold. I caught her wrist when she walked by, kicked the door shut, and then brought her up against the wall.
I smoothed my palms against the wall on either side of her head. Her breath came out shaky, and before either of us said anything, I pressed my mouth against hers, tasting her sweet, chilly lips. My hand drifted to her neck as the first kiss turned into a second and then a third. She made a small noise, one that made me part her lips with my tongue, seeking more of her. She opened her mouth, and our tongues met, warm and seeking.
Something unhinged, and we kissed sloppily then, urgency taking over. My tongue dipped deep into her, tasting her, getting drunk on her bourbon and mint. I trailed my hands down the sides of her coat, searching out the curve of her body. I needed to feel the lines of her, the warmth of her skin, something.
She pulled away, pressing her head against the wall. “Holy hell.”
“You should take this jacket off, if it feels like holy hell in here,” I cracked, tugging at her zipper. “Can I take it off for you?”
“You can do anything you freaking want,” she said, lowering her hood. I unzipped the coat so it hung open, revealing the loose, dark top beneath, and then shed my own coat.
“Anything?” I pressed my lips to the curve of her neck, inhaling the sweet scent there. She smelled like vanilla and something exotic, something I didn’t even know how to place.
“I could revise my statement, but I don’t want to,” she said, voice sounding faraway as I trailed kisses over her jawline.
“Well, I should warn you then...”
She laughed throatily. “Another warning?”
“I can’t do more than kiss you.”
Sadie blinked. “That’s certainly not what you expect to hear in situations like these.”
I pushed her jacket over her shoulders until it rustled to the ground. I traced the outline of her body, over the swell of her hips. “My fight is two weeks away. I can’t get off.”
“Who says you need to?” A playful smile danced over her lips, and in that minute my heart swelled so big I wanted to jump and shout. Sadie was the fucking best.
“Exactly.” I dragged a thumb over her jawline, getting lost in those sparkling jade eyes. “But that doesn’t mean I can’t kiss you everywhere until you do.”

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

It’s a sensual and fast-paced tale of forbidden attraction found in this short story set in the world of MMA fighting.  When a crush leads to something more between two people that should have nothing to do with each other, they’ll have to decide what’s truly worth fighting for in this third installment in The Breaking Series that just keeps getting better and better.

MMA Champ Hawk has the reputation of being a hard-hitting and an even harder-hearted playboy who’s supposedly left a trail of women behind him. With two weeks until his championship match against his mortal enemy, he’s focused on nothing more than fighting.  But when he decides to take a respite at a bar he meets a woman who will turn his world upside down.  In a romance with the fun and flirty Sadie, readers get to see a softer side to Hawk.  Readers get to see a sweet man who values honesty and quickly becomes drawn to Sadie as she sees behind his fighting mask to the man beneath.  There’s a crackling connection between them, in both his heartwarming words and deeds, that endeared him to me and had me rooting for them to work past her brother’s issues.

Sadie’s had a crush on Hawk for the last year and when the opportunity arises to make her presence known to him, she makes the most of it in an erotically-charged night that she doesn’t want to end.  Though she knows of the animosity between Hawk and her brother, she can’t keep away from him as the happiness he brings to her life is infectious.  In their scenes together they’re truly having fun and making an emotional connection despite knowing each other for only a few days.  Though her attraction to Hawk is intense, her devotion to her family is just as important and it leaves her very conflicted when her brother feels she should choose between HEA and family.  Sadie’s an immensely appealing heroine, likable, and strong-willed.  She’s confident when it comes to her PR work, but when it comes to her looks and sexuality she lacks self-confidence which makes Hawk’s attentions all the more treasured.  The closer she and Hawk get the sweeter this story becomes and the bigger the smile on my face.

From start to finish this was an immensely entertaining read with endearing characters put in the middle of a war.  There was plenty of time for love though too in numerous erotic encounters and sweet and heartfelt moments that made Sadie and Hawk an even more relatable couple.  It’s a gritty world that’s being balanced with the romance, a world of larger-than-life fighters whose amping up the anger is cheered.  These insights into the MMA world were vividly depicted, especially in the fight scenes between Hawk and Brute, and had my pulse pounding.  With a romance that’s happy for now, I hope to see this cheer-worthy couple again soon as I look forward to seeing more of their fun and flirty romance.  Alongside this appealing main couple is the angry and revenge-filled Brute, a man betrayed by love who loves his family.  He practically jumped off the page in his scenes and I hope he too finds his own HEA soon.  On a whole readers will find this a delightful read that stands strongly on its own in a sexy and action-fueled series.

My rating for this is an A-
