Book Tour for Wicked Favor by Sawyer Bennett (REVIEW)

Ms. Bennett first introduced readers to the naughtiness of The Wicked Horse in her previous series set in Wyoming.  With this series starter readers once again get to witness the erotic shenanigans that goes on between strangers and couples as an unlikely connection forms between a man bent on revenge and a woman looking to save her niece and her own life.  Keep reading to get a tempting taste of a Wicked Favor by Sawyer Bennett, along with my impressions of it, then add this first installment in The Wild Horse Vegas series to your bookshelf!

New York Times bestselling author, Sawyer Bennett, is happy to introduce a new Wicked Horse club in Las Vegas and you’re cordially invited to attend the grand opening...
As the owner of The Wicked Horse, an elite sex club located along the Vegas Strip, Jerico Jameson never spends the night alone. Gorgeous, ripped, and totally alpha, Jerico doesn’t grant favors and will rarely give you the time of day—unless he wants you in his bed. So when the sister of his sworn enemy shows up asking for help, saying no should be easy. But when Jerico takes one look at her and sees an opportunity to help this beautiful woman while exacting revenge on her brother, he’s not about to pass that up.
Beaten and bruised, Trista Barnes is running out of options, and Jerico is her last chance to get out of the mess she’s in. She doesn’t know why Jerico despises her brother so much, but as long as he can help her, she doesn’t care. Jerico offers her safety while opening her up to a sinful world she never knew existed.
As she succumbs to Jerico’s erotic charm, Trista lets herself fall into the wicked world of guilt free pleasure with no regrets. Under his strong alpha hand, she blooms, and so does Jerico’s possessiveness. But what happens when Trista finds out she was a pawn in Jerico’s game all along, and that the price for his favor was steeper than she ever imagined – her heart.

EXCERPT:

She pops her head in first and gives me a tentative smile. You busy?"
Not at all, I tell her as I wave her in.
She disappears for a moment, and then opens the door wider. I see shes carrying a large, plastic container thats dome shaped and has a handle on top. My eyes only flick to it briefly before coming back to her. Shes much better to look at.
Shutting the door behind her, she walks up to my desk with a goofy grin on her face and sets the plastic container in front of me. I look down at it, and then up to her. Whats that?"
Something I made for you this morning, she says, unlocking the tabs at the bottom. She lifts the dome top off, and Im staring at a cake in front of me.
Slowly, I look back up to her. You made me a cake?"
Not just any cake, she says while wagging a finger at me. A four-layer, homemade red velvet cake with whipped mascarpone icing."
Jesus, I mutter as I look at the cake, wondering what this weird squeezing sensation is in my chest. When I look back up to her, I have to ask her again, You made that just for me?"
Just for you, she says with satisfaction all over her face. You said it was your favorite, and I had some time this morning after pancakes."
I push out of my chair and wave a hand at the cake. You just happened to have all these ingredients, huh? You routinely use something as odd as mascarpone?"
Her grin turns mischievous as she shrugs. Well, I may have had to go to the grocery store for a few things."
Jesus fuck. I cant believe she did that for me.
My mind races over the years, and I cant remember anyone doing something so randomly nice for me. So spontaneous and with the sole intention of doing it to please me.
Picking up the cake, I round the desk and head for the side door that connects to my kitchen. Lets take this next door."
I dont miss the disgruntled expression on Tristas face as she clearly expected me to act differently. Im sure she was thinking Id be a bit more effusive in my praise, and I intend to be.
Just in my apartment.
She follows me through the door as I balance the cake on my hand. I immediately lay it down on my kitchen counter and spin around just as shes walking through the door, taking her face in my hands and walking right into her. My mouth hits hers. She gives a huff of surprise as I turn slightly and back her into the refrigerator. Angling my head, I kiss her deeply. It’s possible because she angles hers the other way, opening her mouth to give me entrance.
Yes, its a deep kiss, but its not sexual. Its a show of unbridled happiness that makes me feel like a kid, or perhaps its gratitude that Trista perhaps thinks this is something other than just sex".
When I pull away, Tristas cheeks are pink and shes slightly panting. She whispers breathlessly to me, I should make you cake more often."
The grin that breaks wide is my answer, followed by another swift kiss. Then Im turning away from her and grabbing a fork out of my drawer. Without any pomp, and certainly no circumstance to wait for a plate, I punch my fork down into the top of the cake and pull a huge chunk out.
Oh, my God.” Trista giggles as she comes to stand beside me at the counter. I angle toward her as I bring the fork to my lips, open my mouth wide, and shove the cake in. Cheeks bulging and the taste of rich cake and lightly sweet, tangy frosting coating my tongue, I groan in satisfaction. Our eyes stay locked as I chew and chew and chew, and finally swallow the heaven in my mouth. Tristas eyes are sparkling with humor and a bit of pride.
Good? she asks.
I give a swipe of my tongue over my bottom lip to catch some stray frosting there. Its amazing. Thank you."
She beams a brilliant smile as she sets the cake carrier on the counter and turns toward the door that leads back into my office. Youre welcome. Now Ive got to get going."
Wait, I say as I snag her arm and turn her back to me. You just got here."
And my work is done, she says impishly, going to her tiptoes to give me a quick kiss. Im meeting Mom and Corinne for lunch, and Ive got to get going."
Well, there goes all thought of spending my afternoon with Trista in bed rather than golfing.
But Id never begrudge her time with Jolene and Corinne. Their unity right now is extremely important. I do pull her into me and wrap my arms around her waist after throwing the fork into the sink. Tristas hands come to my chest as she looks up at me curiously.
Take the night off, I tell her softly and I have to admit, the way her eyes go warm makes me feel fucking really good. Make it an entire day and night thing with Corinne, okay?"
Really? she asks with sweetest type of surprise in her eyes.
Yeah, I murmur as I tighten my arms around her. Ill keep myself occupied with the cake tonight."
Her lips quirking, she gets a playful look in her eyes. We could um FaceTime each other later."
My eyebrows rise with interest, but I play a little stupid. FaceTime?"
Naked. FaceTime.” She annunciates each word slowly, and my dick perks up at this suggestion.
And for a man who has done about every dirty thing imaginable, it hits me hard that this is something new. Something Ive never done with another woman and now, Im glad shes not coming so I can have something new and unique just with Trista.
What time might you be calling me? I ask in a husky voice.
Be ready around eleven, she says, pressing into me. Clothing is optional".
Wrong, I tell her with a shake of my head. Naked is mandatory.

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

With the temps scorching outside so too are the pages in this series starter that's an off-shoot from Ms. Bennett's previous Wicked Horse series set in Wyoming.  Decadent delights abound in this erotically-charged tale of revenge that quickly becomes an obsession towards one woman by a man sworn never to love.

Jerico Jameson's a man of great wealth and power.  With the running of two businesses making him millions of dollars he should be on top of the world but an act of betrayal by his ex-fiancee and a man he entrusted with his life has left him embittered.  Being cheated on has hardened his heart and left him doubtful of love.  Being the owner of a sex club gives him all he needs as he can indulge in all the kinks he can imagine without having to connect with anyone.  This way of life has worked for him for a long time but everything changes the moment the sister of the man he hates, but owes his life to, walks through the door. He's immediately drawn to her carefree looks and air of naivete and is excited for the chance to use her desperation to get back at the man who ruined his dreams for the future.  A contract between them will get her the money she needs to pay back a loan shark while he'll get to introduce her to all sorts of decadent acts in a plot to embarrass her brother with her downfall.  Close quarters, quiet talks, and increasingly erotic encounters lead to an unexpected connection that reawakens his heart and has him desperate to keep her once their contract expires.  When she learns the truth about his vengeance though he realizes all that he had could be lost forever which leaves readers rooting for them to make their way back to each other in a tale with surprising heart and soul.  Jerico's clearly a man who's hurting.  He's enjoyed his indulgences but it's all becoming meaningless and passe until the freshness of Trista comes into his life.  She challenges him while he enjoys introducing her to all sorts of new erotic dreams. He enjoys bringing out her naughty side as much as she enjoys bringing out his softer side.  Jerico's full of anger and detachment early on but being with Trista brings out his kind heart and a desire to do whatever necessary to make her happy.  It's an appealing side and a subtle shift that endeared him to me.  His dichotomy of being a sex god as well as a guy willing to make all the dreams come true for the woman he loves is an enticing one that has me dreaming of him still.

Trista's the kind of girl who's easy to relate to.  She's a hard worker put into a tough position due to her niece's heart ailment.  Borrowing the money needed from a despicable man to help her niece is just the start of her problems as unforeseen events leave her unable to pay the money back.  With nowhere else to turn, and fearful of the consequences, she ends up making a deal with the devil that has her embracing her sensual side with Jerico as her teacher.  Trista challenges him, makes him see things differently, and brings out his gentle side through each sweet word and deed she lavishes on him.  Though she doesn't expect a commitment from him it's clear that they're growing closer just as the end of their contract is ending too.  Finding out the truth about his plot to use her to hurt her brother leaves her bruised and running in anger but readers will be left hoping for HEA as it's obvious how good they are together.  Trista may seem timid at times but when push comes to shove this kitten definitely has claws.  She's intrigued by all the decadence she sees and isn't ashamed to admit her desires which is refreshing to see.  Her interactions are all about sex with Jerico early on but the longer they're together the more heartfelt their time together becomes, the sweeter and more enriched their time together is for readers.

This was a story with only a small speed bump to keep readers from their HEA. The rest of the story is all about decadent delights and erotically-charged encounters that will wrap readers up in a sensual haze.  Numerous scorching encounters between Jerico and Trista, and one between them and his best friend Kynan, left me parched but enjoying the strengthening connection between this dynamic duo.  Kynan's another highlight in this book alongside this immensely appealing main couple.  A sexy Brit covered in tats he's a loyal friend who wears his heart on his sleeve.  He too was once in love and let them get away which has him acting as matchmaker this time around in getting Jerico and Trista together.  He oozes sex appeal, is sinfully charming, and I'm left drooling in anticipation for his story to be told!  This is ultimately a romance with virtually no angst that takes you away from all your cares for a few hours as you become immersed in a story full of eroticism along with surprising heart and soul.  Ms. Bennett's become a master at this balancing act and I look forward to the next installment in this series set amongst all the naughtiness Las Vegas has to offer.

My rating for this is an A-

EXCERPT:

Henry: My life
Lunch block B is still the hardest part of my day, and it has been since about a week after Danny, Brody, and I went our separate ways. Strangely it’s also the highlight of my day. I’m surrounded by the cool people—the ones who matter in school. We crack jokes and laugh really loud. Some of them strategically pick on weak kids and even vulnerable teachers in the caf. Then we laugh even louder.
I never join in with that bullshit, although I admit to smiling and chuckling a little when everybody else is laughing. I kind of have to if I don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb. Thankfully the people who matter have forgotten all about the day I held hands with Danny and Brody, one lunch table to the right of where I sit right now. It’s like that never happened.
I look over at Brody, who sits alone every day at lunch. He has the entire “Island of Misfit Toys” lunch table to himself. Danny must be eating lunch upstairs in the art lounge. I don’t have a clue. In fact, I haven’t seen him in ages. Maybe he quit school.
Brody and I catch eyes. It happens once during every lunch block B. And I’m the one who makes it happen. I stare at him until he looks my way. It’s my only connection to those guys, and it makes my eyes burn every time, but I do it anyway. Brody always smiles when our gazes meet. At first it was a hopeful smile, now it’s just a pleasant one. He’s not an asshole, even to the guy who fucked him over.
I miss them so badly. I miss my old friends. I miss having real friends. I miss what was growing between us.

Readers looking for a story that will scorch their fingertips will get just that with this forbidden romance that comes to a head over the reading of a will.  Keep reading to get a tantalizing taste of the BDSM-fueled Rex by Saskia Walker, with its unconventional agreement between step-siblings tinged with a bit of mystery due to family secrets, then add this erotically-charged tale to your bookshelf!

Rex Carruthers can have any woman he wants, but he wants only one - his stepsister, Carmen Shelby. Their desire was once forbidden, and Rex walked away from his heritage as a result. Now, the reading of a will brings them back together, and Rex has something Carmen wants - his birthright, the stately home, Burlington Manor.
Carmen Shelby is haunted by her desire for her stepbrother, Rex - a dangerous, masterful player, the man who broke her heart. Then Rex makes an outrageous suggestion - he will give her the Burlington Manor Estate, in exchange for the affair they were denied.
Carmen must risk her fragile heart and explore a new, submissive sexuality with Rex, a natural Dom. She quickly discovers Rex may be her true master, but can he control the powerful family secrets that both drew them together - and threaten to tear them apart.

EXCERPT:

Carmen’s attitude triggered something dark in Rex. Something that was hungry and demanding to be fed. “Crawl to me,” he commanded.
Carmen’s head dropped back as if she’d been physically slapped.
The urge to push her some more roared in on him, taking charge. He strode to the chair where his clothes lay abandoned from the night before.
Swiping up his jeans, he fished into the pocket. He tossed the key chain out across the floor, holding on to the end of the long chain. “Get down on your hands and knees and crawl over here for it."
When the key landed on the Persian rug, she stared down at it.
Rex jerked on the chain.
The key flipped over on the floor between them, like bait. Like a lure.
“Show me what you want, what you came here for,” he said.
Carmen shook her head.
“I want to know exactly what you wanted when you stepped through the door. The truth."
She stared up at him. “I can’t do this."
“You can, because you want the Manor, and you agreed to do whatever I said to get it.” Would she use the safeword? Would this push her humiliation trigger just that bit too far? He didn’t care, as long as it got the truth out of her. He had to know. “Why are you here? What did you want? Just the property?"
“Yes.” She dropped onto her hands and knees. Her voice was weak, forced. “It’s a fair exchange, that’s what you said."
The light outlined her body, drawing his eye to her curves.
She moved suddenly, jerking forward and crawling toward the key, but she was in turmoil. He could sense it. He could see it. The sight of her that way made him painfully hard and yet his sense of frustration only grew. He wanted to understand this woman more than anything in the world.
When she got to it, her hand wrapped around the key, but she stayed there, shifting uneasily. The light from the window fell across her naked form, delineating the arch of her waist and the curve of her hip. Her soft skin glowed in the morning light. In contrast, her face was shadowed by her hair as it fell forward, and she looked up at him like a wild creature, her eyes blazing.
“Tell me why,” he demanded, and he held tight to his end of the key chain.
Her body rippled, her back arching. Her head swung to one side. She whimpered. Taking a deep breath she moved again, gathering the chain up in her hand as she went.
“Just the house?” he asked. “That’s all you wanted? You were that mercenary?"
She froze, then sat back on her heels. Her breathing was labored. She was battling inner demons.
He pressed her further. “Why is this so hard for you to talk about?"
“Because I’m scared.” She stared up at him, and her eyes looked wild.
Rex swallowed. “Why are you scared?"
Her eyes flashed shut. “Because I wanted you.” Her voice was scarcely above a whisper “I didn’t realize how much, at first, but I came here because I’ve always wanted you."
Rex's chest felt tight and restricted.
He let go of the key chain, throwing it down on the floor, and clicked his fingers. “Then come to my side."
She moved fast, kneeling at his feet, her arms wrapping around his thighs. The key and its chain lay abandoned on the floor.
Rex stared down at it, assuring himself of what had occurred.
She clung to him, and he felt damp tears against his skin. “Please don’t tease me about it."
Rex let his head drop back, relief barreling through him.
Grateful, and empowered, he stroked her head possessively, admitting to himself that a month would never be enough.
Never enough.

Book Tour for Action by Quinn Anderson (Review & GIVEAWAY)

With the book I'm giving you a glimpse of today readers will be pulled into the world of porn and the two young men trying to make their fake connection a real HEA.  Keep reading to get a tempting glimpse of the m/m romance Action by Quinn Anderson, along with a message from the author, as well as my impressions of this charming and scorching romance.  In honor of this second installment in the Murmur Inc series please leave a comment below answering the question posed, along with your email addy, for the chance to win a $10 Riptide Publishing GC too!

Hello, everyone! This is Quinn Anderson, author of the Murmur Inc. series, and I’m here to share some inside information about Action, coming out June 5th. Stay tuned to get an inside look at what filming porn is really like, hear fun facts about this novel, and find out what’s next for the Murmur Inc. series. Leave comments on the tour posts for a chance to win a $10 Riptide Publishing gift card too!

Pete Griflow is the last person anyone would suspect of being a porn star. He's quiet, gawky, and can't even talk to guys without turning red. But on camera, he's a different person. In the porn world, he's Jaden Prime, a coquettish power bottom who's been tantalizing fans for over a year now.
Pete is in a rut, though, and he knows it. And what’s worse, his boss knows it. If he can’t reignite his passion for the biz, he’s going to have trouble paying his none-too-cheap college tuition.
When Pete is given the opportunity to star in a huge summer production, sparks fly between him and his costar, Kyle Darko. Kyle is Pete’s opposite: he’s daring, achingly sexy, and in love with the sex industry. Their chemistry is palpable on and off screen, but dating on a porn set is tricky. Even pros struggle to separate fantasy from reality, especially with a script dictating their seduction. But what’s building between them can’t be ignored, and it’s so much more than getting some “action.”

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

When you think of porn there's certain stereotypes that come to mind, notions of endless meaningless sex and arrogant participants.  Some of those stereotypes are in fact on display in this romance set in the porn world, but there's also charming characters and heartfelt emotions that emerge from between the numerous erotically-charged scenes.  This dichotomy makes for an engaging read that completely captivated me from the first page to the last.

Pete's a hard working young man struggling to make enough money to cover his college tuition.  To that end, he made the decision to become a gay porn actor (Jaden Prime) and gained a bit of notoriety for his boyish looks.  At first it was an enjoyable experience but lately it's starting to feel a bit stale.  The moment he meets new boy on the block, Kyle Darko, though he suddenly feels energized.  Pete's normally all about being a professional but Kyle (aka Evan) brings out a very unprofessional side to him that's making it harder to not mix business with pleasure.  As they engage in a relationship off-screen their time on-screen becomes even more complicated as the truth starts blending with make-believe which keeps readers on the edge of their seats waiting to see if The End will lead to HEA.  Pete's immensely appealing with his shy and awkward nature.  He's self-deprecating and almost like a teenager when it comes to his early feelings for Evan as he never thinks of himself as sexy.  His interactions with Evan early on were flirty but rife with uncertainty.  The more time they spend together though the bolder and more outgoing he became.  The more interactions they had the more endearing I found them as a couple which had me rooting for them from the very start.

Kyle Darko aka Evan's new to the gay porn world but quickly becoming a star. He has a commanding presence and it's led him to starring roles despite his newbie status.  He's full of self-confidence and his initial meeting with Pete reflects that as it's clear who's in control early on.  He's immediately drawn to Pete and unapologetic when it comes to his flirtiness and attempts to win him over.  He too tries to remain professional on-screen but off-screen he charms and lavishes endless attention on Pete, building up Pete's ego while working on defining their relationship more fully.  Evan's playful and wise beyond his years, quite comfortable in his own skin.  He's self-assured and his unabashed nature made him all the more likable.  He truly cared for Pete and showed him how much through each word and deed and his time with him was exhilarating to see.

Ms. Anderson crafted a surprisingly sweet, sentimental, and sexy romance set in the porn world.  She vividly depicted the intense eroticism of the scenes being filmed, the pitfalls of being a couple in a career where you sleep with others, and the fears of others discovering the truth about their careers.  The relationship between Evan and Pete started off with a crackling introduction and quickly became enflamed through their erotic time on-screen and their time off-screen full of sexual tension.  Erotic encounters are beautifully balanced with sweet moments of heartfelt talks that had readers becoming more invested in them as the story progressed.  Readers got great insight into Pete, seeing him evolve from introverted to self-assured, but the same can't be said about Evan. As Evan is such an appealing character I would've loved to learn more about him, got his POV throughout the story, and it would've made this story even stronger.  What readers DID get to see of him though was an immensely likable and sexy character whose flirtiness and witty and dirty banter with Pete thoroughly entertained me.  Surrounding this delightful couple was an equally entertaining cast of secondary characters who were colorful and easy to relate to.  From Pete's understanding mother to his his brash boss Sana these were characters that were supportive and added even more charm to this very likable story.  There's also the decadently loud and tell-it-like-it-is Colette who knew from the start how picture perfect they are together and whose comments left me roaring with laughter.  From start to finish this was an unforgettable story with endearing characters and crackling dialogue that kept me furiously turning the pages in a tale that had a perfect balance of eroticism and romance and is one not to be missed!

My rating for this is an A-

Cecilia risks her entire future by giving herself—completely—to the man she loves. But when the truth comes out, Edward may have a few surprises of his own for the new Mrs. Rokesby.

EXCERPT:

Manhattan Island
July 1779
His head hurt.
Correction, his head really hurt.
It was hard to tell, though, just what sort of pain it was. He might have been shot through the head with a musket ball. That seemed plausible, given his current location in New York (or was it Connecticut?) and his current occupation as a captain in His Majesty’s army.
There was a war going on, in case one hadn’t noticed.
But this particular pounding—the one that felt more like someone was bashing his skull with a cannon (not a cannonball, mind you, but an actual cannon) seemed to indicate that he had been attacked with a blunter instrument than a bullet.
An anvil, perhaps. Dropped from a second-story window.
But if one cared to look on the bright side, a pain such as this did seem to indicate that he wasn’t dead, which was also a plausible fate, given all the same facts that had led him to believe he might have been shot.
That war he’d mentioned... people did die.
With alarming regularity.
So he wasn’t dead. That was good. But he also wasn’t sure where he was, precisely. The obvious next step would be to open his eyes, but his eyelids were translucent enough for him to realize that it was the middle of the day, and while he did like to look on the metaphorical bright side, he was fairly certain that the literal one would prove blinding.
So he kept his eyes closed.
But he listened.
He wasn’t alone. He couldn’t make out any actual conversation, but a low buzz of words and activity filtered through the air. People were moving about, setting objects on tables, maybe pulling a chair across the floor.
Someone was moaning in pain.
Most of the voices were male, but there was at least one lady nearby. She was close enough that he could hear her breathing. She made little noises as she went about her business, which he soon realized included tucking blankets around him and touching his forehead with the back of her hand.
He liked these little noises, the tiny little mmms and sighs she probably had no idea she was making. And she smelled nice, a bit like lemons, a bit like soap.
And a bit like hard work.
He knew that smell. He’d worn it himself, albeit usually only briefly until it turned into a full-fledged stink.
On her, though, it was more than pleasant. Perhaps a little earthy. And he wondered who she was, to be tending to him so diligently.
“How is he today?"
Edward held himself still. This male voice was new, and he wasn’t sure he wanted anyone to know he was awake yet.
Although he wasn’t sure why he felt this hesitancy.
“The same,” came the woman’s reply.
“I am concerned. If he doesn’t wake up soon..."
“I know,” the woman said. There was a touch of irritation in her voice, which Edward found curious.
“Have you been able to get him to take broth?"
“Just a few spoonfuls. I was afraid he would choke if I attempted any more than that."
The man made a vague noise of approval. “Remind me how long he has been like this?"
“A week, sir. Four days before I arrived, and three since."
A week. Edward thought about this. A week meant it must be... March? April?
No, maybe it was only February. And this was probably New York, not Connecticut.
But that still didn’t explain why his head hurt so bloody much. Clearly he’d been in some sort of an accident. Or had he been attacked?
“There has been no change at all?” the man asked, even though the lady had just said as much.
But she must have had far more patience than Edward, because she replied in a quiet, clear voice, “No, sir. None."
The man made a noise that wasn’t quite a grunt. Edward found it impossible to interpret.
“Er...” The woman cleared her throat. “Have you any news of my brother?"
Her brother? Who was her brother?
“I am afraid not, Mrs. Rokesby."
Mrs. Rokesby?
“It has been nearly two months,” she said quietly.
Mrs. Rokesby? Edward really wanted them to get back to that point. There was only one Rokesby in North America as far as he knew, and that was him. So if she was Mrs. Rokesby...
“I think,” the male voice said, “that your energies would be better spent tending to your husband."
Husband?
“I assure you,” she said, and there was that touch of irritation again, “that I have been caring for him most faithfully."
Husband? They were calling him her husband? Was he married? He couldn’t be married. How could he be married and not remember it?
Who was this woman?
Edward’s heart began to pound. What the devil was happening to him?
"Did he just make a noise?” the man asked.
“I... I don’t think so."
She moved then, quickly. Hands touched him, his cheek, then his chest, and even through her obvious concern, there was something soothing in her motions, something undeniably right.
“Edward?” she asked, taking his hand. She stroked it several times, her fingers brushing lightly over his skin. “Can you hear me?"
He ought to respond. She was worried. What kind of gentleman did not act to relieve a lady’s distress?
“I fear he may be lost to us,” the man said, with far less gentleness than Edward thought appropriate.
“He still breathes,” the woman said in a steely voice.
The man said nothing, but his expression must have been one of pity, because she said it again, more loudly this time.
He still breathes."
“Mrs. Rokesby..."
Edward felt her hand tighten around his. Then she placed her other on top, her fingers resting lightly on his knuckles. It was the smallest sort of embrace, but Edward felt it down to his soul.
“He still breathes, Colonel,” she said with quiet resolve. “And while he does, I will be here. I may not be able to help Thomas, but--"
Thomas. Thomas Harcourt. That was the connection. This must be his sister. Cecilia. He knew her well.
Or not. He’d never actually met the lady, he felt like he knew her. She wrote to her brother with a diligence that was unmatched in the regiment. Thomas received twice as much mail as Edward, and Edward had four siblings to Thomas’s one.
Cecilia Harcourt. What on earth was she doing in North America? She was supposed to be in Derbyshire, in that little town Thomas had been so eager to leave. The one with the hot springs. Matlock. No, Matlock Bath.
Edward had never been, but he thought it sounded charming. Not the way Thomas described it, of course; he liked the bustle of city life and couldn’t wait to take a commission and depart his village. But Cecilia was different. In her letters, the small Derbyshire town came alive, and Edward almost felt that he would recognize her neighbors if he ever went to visit.
She was witty. Lord, she was witty. Thomas used to laugh so much at her missives that Edward finally made him read them out loud.
Then one day, when Thomas was penning his response, Edward interrupted so many times that Thomas finally shoved out his chair and held forth his quill.
“You write to her,” he’d said.
So he did.
Not on his own, of course. Edward could never have written to her directly. It would have been the worst sort of impropriety, and he would not have insulted her in such a manner. But he took to scribbling a few lines at the end of Thomas’s letters, and whenever she replied, she had a few lines for him.
Thomas carried a miniature of her, and even though he said it was several years old, Edward had found himself staring at it, studying the small portrait of the young woman, wondering if her hair really was that remarkable golden color, or if she really did smile that way, lips closed and mysterious.
Somehow he thought not. She did not strike him as a woman with secrets. Her smile would be sunny and free. Edward had even thought he’d like to meet her once this godforsaken war was over. He’d never said anything to Thomas, though.
That would have been strange.
Now Cecilia was here. In the colonies. Which made absolutely no sense, but then again, what did? Edward’s head was injured, and Thomas seemed to be missing, and...
Edward thought hard.
...and he seemed to have married Cecilia Harcourt.
He opened his eyes and tried to focus on the green-eyed woman peering down at him.
“Cecilia?”

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

When you read a Julia Quinn romance there's a sense of serenity and sentimentality, a feeling of being wrapped up in a comfy quilt.  With this latest release readers will find themselves quickly immersed in a strong-willed heroine's journey to America in hopes of saving her brother who finds herself unexpectedly joined to her brother's friend instead.  Against a backdrop of war and uncertainty two people find themselves clinging to each other in a tenuous connection that started out as a lie but soon became oh so real.

Cecilia Harcourt's world was very small as her life revolved around her tiny village.  With virtually no friends and a father who kept her at arm's length, the only person who truly cared for her was her brother Thomas.  Hearing of his being injured has her setting out for America to help him heal.  With him gone missing she's left with no where to turn to for help until she discovers his friend Edward Rokesby convalescing.  In a moment of desperation she blurts out an untruth but it doesn't make her any less determined to see him recover as well as getting to the truth of her brother's disappearance.  Being in close quarters with Edward has them getting to know more about each other, more than the brief sentences she sent in letters to her brother.  She shares introspective feelings and heartfelt emotions as the two of them progress from friends to lovers under the guise of being married.  With his memory returning though she knows time is running out for them as the truth of her feelings for him becomes clearer.  Cecilia was the quintessential English miss, never doing the unexpected until her brother was in danger.  Coming to America brings out a backbone in her that has her doing whatever necessary to help Edward and get answers about her brother.  Knowing that her dream-like time with Edward's coming to an end has her making unexpected choices that show her embracing living over propriety.  Cecilia's immensely likable and loyal.  She made a bold decision that was not done maliciously and it ate at her.  Her reasons for keeping the truth quiet did eventually become personal, but every step she took in her journey was done out of love.

Edward grew up in grandeur but longed for excitement which he found in war. He also found a good friend and an unconventional romance with a kind-hearted and loyal young woman.  Their connection started out subtly but it quickly came to consume him and is what had him embracing her lie.  With his memory gone due to injury he must rely on Cecilia, just as she must rely on him to get to the truth about her brother, which puts them in close quarters.  While Edward heals much time is spent getting to know one another which ultimately turns a lie into the truth.  When he discovers the outcome of her brother, along with the truth about their relationship, it leads to great heartache and sacrifice and an ultimately immensely satisfying conclusion.  Edward's a true gentleman, always worried about Cecilia's reputation.  His infatuation with her started out innocently through a sentence or two in her brother's letters home but they became far more important as time went on.  He became attracted to her words at first but then it was her kindness and loyalty which had him eager to embrace the lie she told everyone and is why he went out of his way to claim her to one and all.  Even when the truth is revealed he didn't act out in anger.  He always put her first which laid a solid foundation for a relationship that started out wrong but quickly became oh so right.

Though the premise of this tale is a bit silly, I still found myself charmed courtesy of the talented Ms. Quinn.  The story often drags but it's the high quality of characterizations that kept me furiously forging on.  The romance between Cecilia and Edward is sensual, and far from scorching, but their appealing connection kept me invested in their futures.  The banter between them was equally engaging and though there was shyness early on it took on a fun and flirty vibe as the story progressed.  The mystery surrounding Thomas intrigued me early on as much was hinted at, a sense of something nefarious, but unfortunately the culmination was left lacking.  I thought a bomb was on the horizon when the truth about Thomas came out but it was more of a whimper. All-in-all this was a sweet and sensual tale of friends becoming lovers and in that simple summation this story succeeded.  While it's not the best work from this author it's still a tale that gave me lots of warm fuzzies and is a fine addition to reader's bookshelves.

My rating for this is a B-
