MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

As a fan of rockstar romances I'm always on the lookout for new-to-me authors and their stories set in the music world.  With Save Me, Ms. Ackerman has created a sizzling story of bandmates (and friends) who find their connection growing stronger despite their painful pasts and the judgments of their fans and their record label.  With each turn of the page I became more and more invested in the journey of these three bandmates and their sizzling encounters both in and out of the bedroom.

While I often pictured BTS while reading this story, these characters quickly set themselves apart through vibrant personalities and backstories that pulled at my heartstrings.  As a band I found them engaging and look forward to the rest of the band having their story's told.  As for this triad, their connection felt natural from the very start and it had me rooting for them to overcome their bruised pasts and a future frowned upon by certain people.  Throughout this story Ms. Ackerman nicely balanced the depiction of this triad's painful pasts with the reality of what being together means in a tale that warmed my heart while putting a blush to my cheeks.  With each larger than life character finding a place in my heart I found myself drawn to each character in vastly different ways, ways that pushed all my emotional buttons.  Though certain elements of the rockstar world felt stereotypically depicted here, it was the emotional investment that set this story apart and has me highly recommending it while I hope that we return to this world again soon!

“You don’t get to say it was a mistake,” Bene told him. “You don’t get to tell me to listen. We...I...thought this was forever. We trusted you. The saddest part is, you couldn’t put your trust in me.”

Max, in his quiet way, came up and put his hand on Bene’s shoulder for strength and Bene could feel that Max was quaking.

Book Review of Hot Licks by A.M. Arthur

As a fan of rockstar romances I couldn’t wait to start reading this book!  Add in a scorching romance between not two, but three, engaging men carrying their own emotional baggage and I quickly became consumed by their rocky road to HEA.

Lead singer Benji has been with his boyfriend Joshua since they met in college.  It’s been a bit rocky for their open relationship lately though as Benji’s insecurities, and Joshua’s fears over his ability to commit, are putting their HEA in doubt.  Add in the tempting bartender Van and readers have even more doubt about their future as Van is a temptation that neither can ignore.  A drunken night and a lot of soul searching soon has Benji proposing an unconventional idea that slowly binds them together more tightly than ever before in a journey full of emotional ups and downs.  Benji’s a sweet young man with a past full of pain that’s left its mark.  He endured horrific bullying in high school for being gay, leading to feelings of betrayal by someone pretending to be his friend, and ending in an event that‘s made him feel insecure when it comes to sex.  He’s shy, despite being a rockstar, but has a kind heart and a desire to do whatever necessary to make the man he loves happy...even if bringing Van into their relationship brings back his painful past.  He seems a bit unsure at the start but gains strength to become more self-assured as the story progresses.  As he discovers who he is, and admits what he needs, he finally starts standing up for himself in an empowering act late in the story that had me cheering.

Joshua has his own emotional baggage because of his rocky relationship with his family and has felt very much alone when it comes to familial love.  He’s always enjoyed the openness of his relationship with Benji, but when Benji wants him to commit it leads to a break-up and a meeting with the sexy and soulful Van that changes all of their lives irrevocably.  Time apart makes them realize how much they mean to each other, but it also leads to lots of soul searching and admissions about their sexual needs.  Part of that need revolves around Van and how much better they are when he’s in the picture.  From there it’s a juggling of needs and boundaries that scorched up the pages.  Joshua’s a likable guy who’s going through a crisis of trying to find himself and what makes him happy.  He never thought himself capable of commitment but he works very hard on making his relationship with Benji work through lots of honesty and heartfelt talks.  He’s supportive and caring and I enjoyed his sweet side as well as his commanding one.

Van Holt’s the typical fun and flirty bartender, but his past is anything but typical.  He was adopted by a farm family who were deeply religious, judgmental, and physically punished him for being gay.  The only joy he found back then was music and the boy next door who introduced him to making music...along with other steamier things he taught him.  It ultimately led to tragedy and years on the road that changed Van inside and out.  He’s leery of opening up his heart again, content to go from one coupling to another, but the moment he meets Benji and Joshua he can’t get them out of his head.  Not wanting to harm their close connection has him hesitant to agree to their unconventional proposal, but once he does it leads to lots of erotically-charged encounters and an opening of the emotional floodgates through quiet moments of talking.  Van’s a wonderful balance to Benji and Joshua, the perfect conduit to both of their needs, and a good sounding board as they work through their relationship.  On the outside he appears carefree, but his past is very painful as his father hurt him in the worst way possible by crushing his dreams and his hopes for the future.  He clawed his way back to living and I was rooting for him every step of the way to find a chance to love and be loved again.

This was an entertaining read full of intense emotions and scorching encounters.  Sexuality was discussed in all its various definitions, giving a wide spectrum that was never judgemental.  At times the discussion pulled me out of the story, but it helped give greater insight into Benji and Joshua’s relationship.  I enjoyed getting to know each of these men through glimpses into their pasts, the tragic stories they told, that have left them bruised but not broken.  Together they found love and wholehearted acceptance and they were a formidable force when things got difficult.  There was a perfect balance between the erotic interludes and emotional talks that kept me fully invested in the story too.  The interludes were both tender and dominant with each man’s unique personalities shining through in the heat of the moment.  Readers once again got to see the colorful members of Fading Daze and the affect Benji’s relationship has on their future.  It leads to harsh words, hurt feelings, but ultimately makes them stronger.  Though this is the third installment in the Off Beat series, I had no trouble immersing myself in this world.  The characters were immensely likable, the feelings both raw and sentimental, and from the first page to the last I felt like I’d been put through the wringer alongside the characters.  Though the story got a bit off track when delving into the definition of sexuality, and a reveal late in the story came out of nowhere, I still found this an appealing story that now has me wanting to go back and see where it all started.

My rating for this is a B.

Henry: My life

Lunch block B is still the hardest part of my day, and it has been since about a week after Danny, Brody, and I went our separate ways. Strangely it’s also the highlight of my day. I’m surrounded by the cool people—the ones who matter in school. We crack jokes and laugh really loud. Some of them strategically pick on weak kids and even vulnerable teachers in the caf. Then we laugh even louder.

I never join in with that bullshit, although I admit to smiling and chuckling a little when everybody else is laughing. I kind of have to if I don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb. Thankfully the people who matter have forgotten all about the day I held hands with Danny and Brody, one lunch table to the right of where I sit right now. It’s like that never happened.

I look over at Brody, who sits alone every day at lunch. He has the entire “Island of Misfit Toys” lunch table to himself. Danny must be eating lunch upstairs in the art lounge. I don’t have a clue. In fact, I haven’t seen him in ages. Maybe he quit school.

Brody and I catch eyes. It happens once during every lunch block B. And I’m the one who makes it happen. I stare at him until he looks my way. It’s my only connection to those guys, and it makes my eyes burn every time, but I do it anyway. Brody always smiles when our gazes meet. With no one else around, and no mobile phone signal to call for help, they manage to get the stranger back to their cottage to get him warm and dry, and figure out what to do next.

Closing his book with a very final slap, Nathan then put it on the coffee table in front of him. He leaned back in his chair. Stretching languidly, he said, “Bloody good, that was. Though, admittedly, I thought it’d last me all week. Wasn’t expecting to get through it on day one."

Raising an eyebrow, Lee shot Nathan an amused glance. “Not far off myself. Fucking storm. Stupid us, eh, going on holiday in the UK in summertime—not like you can guarantee the sodding weather, is it? Should’ve gone to the Canaries."

“No, we can’t guarantee the weather, but…” Nathan gave the window a sidelong glance, “I do have some good news."

“Yeah?"

“Yeah. The torrential downpour has stopped."

“Seriously?” Lee slammed his own book closed and scurried over to the window. “Oh, wow, it’s cleared right up, and I can see a rainbow. Wanna head out? Just a little wander down to that pond we saw on the way here, maybe? Get some fresh air. We’ve got loads of daylight left, haven’t we?" Nathan checked his watch. “Yeah, plenty. Especially if we’re only nipping to the pond. It’s probably only a fifteen-minute walk."

“Fantastic. I was going a bit fucking stir crazy in here. I’ll grab our coats and shoes."

Lee had disappeared into the hallway of their rented holiday cottage before Nathan had the chance to reply. Shaking his head with a smile, Nathan collected their empty mugs from the coffee table and took them into the kitchen, then got a bottle of water from the fridge. He doubted they’d need a drink during their short trek along the road, but he could just shove the bottle in his coat pocket and forget about it. At least it’d be there if they wanted it.

When he returned to the living room, Lee was just about to tie up his laces.

“I got water,” Nathan said, brandishing the bottle.

“Cool. Shoes are there.” He nodded to the chair Nathan had been sitting in. Sure enough, his trail shoes were waiting on the floor in front of it.

“Thanks."

Within a few minutes, they were headed out of the door. Nathan locked up, pocketed the key, then checked the handle. He doubted very much the place would get broken into—they were in the middle of nowhere, after all. There were farms nearby, but the closest village was about a mile and a half away. So any thieves would have to make a considerable effort to get to the cottage in the first place, never mind attempt to break into it. Rolling his eyes at his own paranoia, he turned and followed Lee, who’d already started walking slowly along the road in the direction of the pond.

After falling into step beside Lee, Nathan pulled in some deep breaths, enjoying the fresh air after being cooped up in the cottage. It was a beautiful and cozy place, but it was supposed to be a base for them to go walking—somewhere for them to eat, sleep and shower, not to be stuck in for hours on end, staring at the walls. Or climbing them.

He admired the rainbow as they walked, its vivid colors painted across the watery sky. It seemed the clouds had literally exhausted themselves—only occasional wispy streaks of white now interrupted the never-ending blue. The sun beamed down, heating up the ground and beginning to evaporate the huge puddles. It would take some doing—one such puddle stretched across the width of the road, and they had to skirt around its edge to avoid getting wet feet.

Nathan smiled. Though the storm itself had been grim, the washed-out aftermath made everything feel fresh, clean somehow.

“You look thoughtful,” Lee said, breaking into his reverie. “A penny for them?"

“Mmm. It’s one of those things that sounds better in your head than said out loud."

“Try me."

Shrugging, Nathan replied. “Nothing major. Just admiring the rainbow, the sky, the clouds… Thinking how everything looks so fresh and clean after a good storm. Like it’s been purified, or something… Ugh, it’s stupid."

Lee stopped and reached for Nathan’s hand. His green eyes were wide and filled with wonder. “No, it isn’t. Not at all—I was thinking something similar myself. It’s kinda romantic, isn’t it? Purification, rebirth, and all that."

“In a roundabout way, maybe. I dunno.” He shrugged again.

Lee’s eyes narrowed, and his lips curved into a wicked grin. “We could make it romantic."

“How so?"

“Come here, and I’ll show you.” Still gripping Nathan’s hand, Lee tugged him close and moved in for a kiss. Nathan went into the embrace willingly, the smile on his face soon smothered by Lee’s hot lips.
