Today we're bringing a bit of paranormal to the blog with Her Guardian Angel by Khloe Wren, a steamy paranormal read. Keep reading to learn more about this book through Ms. Wren's comments on why we readers are drawn to the paranormal genre and through my review. Make sure to leave a comment below on what draws YOU to the paranormal genre for your chance to win some great prizes.
I believe that paranormal genre continues to draw readers because it’s so far removed from our reality, while still maintaining elements of our lives.
You can have a ‘plain Jane’ type woman, who’s a little overweight and has low self esteem – you know, the type who gets passed over in the real world – who is suddenly the focus of all the attention. The shifters/vampires/aliens cherish these types of females. Seeing them as the gentle souls and caring mothers (and sexy, firey lovers) that human men can’t see.
It also allows for a whole new world to be created. Gone are the injustices of this world, the fact that the reader’s rent is due or the power company will cut off the power if the bill isn’t paid this month, or bigger issues like the starving children and families in Africa, the massive level of homelessness around the globe. Don’t get me wrong, there are injustices in these other worlds, but they are always solved, the damsel in distress rescued and the world set to rights again. In the end, the woman who was nothing, gains everything. The man/beast/alien has found his true mate and is content and spends the rest of his life worshipping them.
I mean, c’mon! What’s not to love about that! It’s certainly a lot of fun to write!
The last thing Snow-Leopard Shifter Dominic expects to find at an accident scene is his mate, the beautiful Adele, but after four years of dreaming of her, there she is, right in front of him. However, winning the heart of his lonely, grieving mate is no simple task. Just as their relationship begins to heat up a gravely injured child, Kelly, stumbles into their lives after escaping and fleeing her abuser. Will Dominic and Adele's bond grow stronger as they nurture and protect Kelly? Will their relationship be able to survive all that fate plans on throwing their way?
EXCERPT:
She lowered her mug as she noticed a shiny black ute drive past slowly. Strange. It kept going so she dismissed it as just someone looking for a specific house number on Wattle Avenue.
She took another sip and looked back over toward the river. If Kelly didn't come back soon, she was going to have to go and find her. Sophie was joining them for a meeting at the school. Forms and tests needed to be attended to before plans could be made to get Kelly settled into school. Both her and Sophie were sure Kelly was going to need a lot of help to get up to speed. The poor petit fille could barely read or write.
Adele just about dropped her mug as she saw Kelly running toward the house. She was running as fast as she could and holding her jacket bundled in her arms. As she got closer, Adele saw blood on the jacket and on her shirt. What the hell had happened? She dropped her mug on the table, not caring that coffee sloshed everywhere as she rushed out the front door.
"Kelly, cherie, what happened? Are you hurt?" Adele asked as Kelly skidded to a stop and into her arms.

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:
In an already crowded field of paranormal books Khloe Wren has joined in with this steamy read that lays the groundwork for a series that has set itself apart through some unique aspects. Her Guardian Angel deals with snow leopard shifters who've been in existence for centuries and focuses on a shifter family of firefighters in Tasmania. Setting the story in Tasmania lends a bit of exoticness to an already exotic theme. Along with a burgeoning romance comes an out of left field secondary story dealing with a psychopath that is ultimately the catalyst in cementing the main couple's HEA.
Dominic is part of a long line of firefighters as his father and brothers are all part of the force. He's been haunted by feelings of sadness and after talking with his father he discovers that it's the beginning of his journey towards finding his mate. Once their kind turns 21 their mind, heart, and soul start dreaming of their mate with the images getting stronger and more specific as the years progress so they can find them. For four years he comforts Adele through dreams waiting for the day he can comfort her as a man. He knows she's wary of men so he tries to move slowly in forming a relationship with her. The way he talks to her though shows a man obsessed with his woman as he constantly calls her beautiful and sexy....so much so that it was used in place of her name oftentimes. He knows he needs to tell her the truth about himself but he's scared she'll turn him away. Starting a sexual relationship is daunting enough as they're both virgins which is apparent as Adele seems frightened at first by many of the deeds they do. Ultimately she shows her wild side which leads to many erotically charged sexual interludes. It's not until a life or death situation that he's forced into revealing the truth about himself and everyone discovers an even more shocking truth about Adele that has a big impact on them and future stories.
Dominic is over-the-top romantic in both words and deeds, almost too much at times. Adele is a likable and caring person who hates to see others in pain. I wish she'd been a bit more badass though, especially in dealing with the psychopath. She spent way too much time crying. The parts of the story dealing with the psychopath and his brutalization of women felt very out of place. It felt like a completely different story. It's only purpose seemed to be to bring the hero and heroine together completely and introduce us to a young girl who I sense is going to be someone's mate eventually. The history of these shifters and their hierarchy is intriguing and is what sets it apart from other shifter stories. Finding their mates through dreams forms a bond slowly and makes for a more romantic premise as their true love is just out of reach. Their plans to find other missing shifters opens up the possibility for many more stories, especially as Dominic has many sexy brothers still looking for their own mates along with some intriguing friends who grabbed my attention. This was a fast-paced story with numerous sexy scenes alongside some truly vile and bloody scenes courtesy of the psychopath. I enjoyed the story, small issues and all, and definitely plan on reading the next book in the series as it appears that the heroine is in a wheelchair and in need of rescuing by Dominic's brother Conner who's super sexy too.
My rating for this is a C+
