MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:
Relationships are rocky at times, but under the glare of the media and an over-protective father HEAs are even harder to achieve as love blooms between an up and coming rock star and the daughter of rock star royalty. From inner doubts about being good enough for each other to inappropriate fans to a father who's become jaded after living the rock star life for so many years, Kitt and Texas have a lot stacked against them. They have a strong bond though, understand each other's quirks, and have experienced mutual loss in their past to make them even more willing to fight for their future. It all combines to make a story full of angst, lots of jumping to conclusions, and numerous steamy encounters that left me verklempt.
Kitt could never see himself doing anything other than music. His band started off with a small following but soon gained the support of famed rock band Enigma and their lead singer Mark, who feels like a father figure to him. Being attracted to Mark's daughter Texas therefore leaves him feeling guilty. Mark always trusted him to watch out for his daughter but one forbidden Christmas kiss has him thinking of forever...as well as all sorts of dirty thoughts. This duty leaves him conflicted, as does keeping their relationship secret. When the public does discover the truth it puts even more pressure on them and leads to more doubts that only their bond and true love will be able to overcome. Kitt is a super sexy rock star who's in awe of the fame surrounding him. He hasn't let it go to his head, but he does enjoy the perks of beautiful groupies and abundant alcohol (which is reflected in LOTS of scenes involving drinking and talking about drinking). Once he commits to Texas though, he's all in. Beneath that playboy exterior is a sweet and charming man willing to do anything to make his girl happy. He was also a bit more mature than Texas in many of their interactions and their path to HEA would've gone much smoother if only she'd listened to him.
Texas is the apple of her daddy's eye and their connection runs deep as her mother never wanted to be a part of her life. Her father's given her everything and in return she's tried to be a good daughter. His love though keeps her a bit closeted and gives her an air of naivete that sometimes frustrated me. Her whole life has been spent on the road, seeing the excesses of being a rock star first hand, and seeing the man she loves embrace the lifestyle causes her a lot of pain and leaves her in doubt. Her doubts are the cause of most of their angst-fueled arguments along with her being quick to judge. More roadblocks involve keeping her relationship with Kitt a secret as to not disappoint her father which again reflected immaturity on her part. When it matters most though she fights for the man who believes in her and supports her no matter what she wants. Texas is larger than life, a bit spoiled, but still likable. Her interactions with the band are playful and snarky with her giving as good as she gets. There's a sense of family between them all with her the little sister they've all sworn to protect. Being around so much testosterone leaves her a bit rough around the edges and more than a match for Kitt which had me rooting for them.
This is a book that went on a bit too long. The burgeoning romance between Kitt and Texas was sweet to see evolve but started to drag and frustrate me with its snail's pace. Luckily, each time they got together they set off fireworks as their connection crackled with sexual tension. The overall story was told in dual POVs with chapters reminiscent of diary entries as readers experienced a day in the life of a rock band on tour throughout Europe. The rock star world, with all its vices, is vividly depicted and fully immerses readers into all the chaos along with showing the individual affects on each band member. Some handled fame better than others which left me intrigued for more books set in this world as Milo and Cooper have been drowning themselves in sex and alcohol to mask the pain of lost love and loneliness. The funny but insightful Milo still pines for the girl he left behind for fame, while the sex-obsessed and immensely snarky Cooper has found himself drawn to Texas's friend Peyton who's more than a match for him. Though this story wasn't the best in the rock star genre, it had plenty to keep me intrigued and counting down the days until the next installment reunites us with the sexy members of Filthy Sound.
