MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:
As a fan of Ms. Jackson’s Bleeding Stars series I was thrilled to once again breathe in these new characters and the ties that bind the members of the Sunder family band and those closest to them in this new standalone release. From the first page to the last readers will be taken on a rollercoaster ride of intense emotions from which I still don’t think I’ve fully recovered in this starter story to the Falling Stars series that’s full of angst and a bit of suspense concerning this pairs past as well as their future.
Leif Godwin is the drummer for Carolina George, a band we’ve glimpsed throughout the Bleeding Stars series, and has a heartbreaking past that’s slowly revealed as the story progresses. It’s a past that he feels defines him and makes him feel as though he’s not good enough for Mia, the single mom next door. He doesn’t want his past to taint her in any way but it gets harder and harder to keep her at arm’s length. It’s a battle that he ultimately steps back from as he grows closer to Mia, sharing their mutual pain, and bonding with her kids in scenes that endeared him to me. A protective side emerged, one that warmed my heart. With each turn of the page Leif shows himself to be a perfectly imperfect hero with a hidden heart of gold, sexy yet brooding at times too. He may not feel worthy of Mia, but she’s just what he needs to heal and move beyond his past to reach his HEA.
Readers were first introduced to Mia West in her rock star brother’s story Where Lightning Strikes, and from that moment I knew she was a heroine worthy of her own story. She’s had her own past full of pain and it’s part of the reason why she ends up living next door to Leif. She’s not the kind of heroine to take stuff lying down though, she’s a strong-willed heroine who fights for those she claims as her own. She’s a tough mama bear to her kids and is a strong support to Leif, despite him trying to push her away. From the moment they meet they’re combustible in a connection full of heart and soul where they both support each other unconditionally.
On a whole this was a sensual story with a nice balance of angst and suspense. The main couple were a formidable pairing whose romance tugged at my heartstrings while I rooted for them every step of the way. They may have been hurt by their pasts but they ultimately took a chance on love...and each other in an epic romance. I don’t normally care for kids in my romances but for Mia’s kids I’ll make an exception. I liked them and the softer side they brought out in Leif. Along with this appealing main couple, I was equally thrilled by the glimpses given of the Sunder boys. I loved getting an update on them and their HEAs that continue to put a smile on my face. Readers also got a glimpse of the future courtesy of the other members of Carolina George as I look forward to their stories being told too. Ms. Jackson has crafted yet another emotional read, an intense one of moving on from the past, and her poetic storytelling has captivated me and has me recommending this wholeheartedly.
My rating for this is an A.
