Book Release Blast for Before I’m Gone by Heidi McLaughlin (REVIEW)…….

Readers will find themselves quickly engrossed by this heartfelt contemporary tale of living life to the fullest as their emotions will run the gamut from teary-eyed to happiness.  Keep reading to get a tempting taste of Before I’m Gone by Heidi McLaughlin, along with my impressions of it, then add it to your bookshelf!

Palmer Sinclair has never needed anyone’s help. A successful loan officer, she’s all work and no play. But when splitting headaches and blurred vision begin to affect her job, she begrudgingly sees a doctor and receives a diagnosis that leaves her shaken to her core and with little time left. Facing an uncertain future, Palmer makes a bucket list, determined to do the things she’d only dreamed of before she goes.
Kent Wagner has dedicated his life to helping others. An army medic turned paramedic, he’s a regular at Palmer’s bank who makes his monthly car loan payments in person just to see her radiant smile. After responding to not one but two 911 calls involving Palmer, he learns about her bucket list. Touched by her circumstances—and needing a distraction from his own—Kent offers to take Palmer to the places on her list.
Neither is prepared for the emotional journey ahead…or how little time they have left together, but the friendship they find in that brief time might be the most lasting legacy of all.

EXCERPT:

“Palmer stood, brushed her hands down the front of her skirt, and tugged on her jacket. Appearance meant a lot to her. She wanted people to see her as put together and professional. When she came out of her office, she noticed the lobby was beginning to fill up with the lunchtime crowd.
She walked behind the long counter and greeted each of her tellers. When she came to Shaunie, she quietly told her to go to lunch once she finished with her customer and then made her way to the workstation Palmer kept available in case of emergencies. At her terminal, she logged in and called for the next customer to step forward without looking up. When she did, she saw a man who often made her heart skip a beat or two—Kent Wagner.
Kent was a client and off limits as far as Palmer was concerned, not that she’d ever shoot her shot or let anyone know she had a crush on him. He was a favorite at the bank. All the tellers liked him and thought he was too cute for words. Palmer thought he was handsome, with his deep-blue eyes and dirty-blond hair. Kent kept his hair short and often buzzed it during the summer months.
“Hey, Palmer,” Kent said as he approached her station. Today, he wore normal clothes, or what he referred to as his “street clothes.” Most of the time when he came in, he was in his EMS uniform. “How are you today?”
“I-I’m well,” she stammered. “How are you?”
Kent smiled the most adorable, crooked smile Palmer had ever seen. “I’m well. How are you?” He ducked his head and his cheeks flushed with a pink hue, probably realizing he’d asked the same question twice. “I’ve missed you the last couple of times I was here.”
Over the years, Palmer had gotten to know most of their long-term clients, whether it was from being their bank teller, opening new accounts, or helping them with loans, which was how she’d met Kent. She had a knack for memorizing the little things when it came to the clientele, although lately she’d felt her memory slipping more than usual. Palmer loved to listen to their stories, always fascinated by what they could tell her in their minutes-long transactions, but it was her interactions with Kent that had left a lasting impression. He was a kind man and always had a compliment for the staff.
“You have to come at lunchtime,” she told him. “What can I help you with today?” Kent slid a check toward her. “Just paying my car payment.”
Palmer brought the thin paper toward her and typed his name into her computer. “You know, you can make this payment online.”
“I know,” he said. “But then I wouldn’t get to come in here and say hi...to you.” He muttered this last part, so Palmer barely heard him. She tried not to smile, but the giddy emotions she felt took over. It was her turn to duck her head and be coy.

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

Readers will want to keep a box of tissues close by as they start reading this tale of living life to the fullest, embracing the little moments as well as the big, and finding a loving soul when you least expect it.  This story pulls you in from the very start, warming your heart before breaking it in little increments in a powerful tale that you won't forget easily.

Palmer Sinclair's the kind of heroine you root for, a heroine who had a tough beginning with being a foster child and never having a soft place to land.  She's always felt alone, dealt with life on her own, exuding toughness while still being immensely likable.  When headaches and dizziness lead to a terminal diagnosis, Palmer decides to finally start living instead of dreaming.  She creates a bucket list that will change her life irrevocably, especially once a regular visitor to the bank where she works joins her on her journey.  Everything Palmer felt and experienced felt real, with raw emotions being laid bare as friendship and love were balanced with fear on a haunting journey that weighed on my heart with each day that passed on her diagnostic timetable.

Kent Wagner has a painful past of his own as a veteran.  Add in an unexpected and life-altering change thrown his way and he's got a lot weighing on him.  He does have one bright spot in his life though...his monthly visit to the bank where Palmer works which creates a very flirtatious and cute connection between them.  With Kent's job as a paramedic it's not long before he sees Palmer elsewhere too, as her condition starts to deteriorate, and he's the one to take her to the hospital once 911's been called.  Kent's an immensely appealing hero, one who's just what Palmer needs on her journey.  He has a true heart of gold and in helping her live he found a way to heal himself.  I was glad she had someone as loving and supportive as him on her journey as their interactions added a bit of romance as well as some much-needed moments of humor to this emotionally intense story.

Readers will be captivated by this story from start to finish with each and every high and low, each tear and every smile being earned.  The beginning may be a bit heavy-handed emotionally but it's ultimately an empowering tale of living life to the fullest now because you might not get a tomorrow.  It's a tale of not living in the past, making the most of every precious minute you're given, on a journey that I'm still thinking about.  Even if you think you know how this story will end it's still an epic, heartfelt journey that will make readers appreciate their own lives more.

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

D. M. Earl continues to be the star of my literary lists with her captivating characters and gritty storylines that all combine to make epic reads that readers are drawn to from start to finish.  Ms. Earl's latest romance is yet another winner in a long line of unforgettable tales that keep you on the edge of your seat, where secrets and people's pasts leave HEAs uncertain.

This story reintroduces readers to Frank aka Dingo, the prospect who's a funnyman to the world despite lots of painful baggage he carries around without a word.  Picking up where the previous book ended, he's given a mission to bring Celestine De Luca aka Celee back home and it's a mission that changes not only his life irrevocably, but the lives of many Club members seen throughout the MC world crafted by Ms. Earl.  Celee's a woman being torn apart by having a foot in two different worlds, that of the De Luca Crime Family as well as the white supremacist group, the Thunder Club Knuckle Brotherhood.  She's now a woman with a target on her back for all she knows and for the small lies she's had to tell.  A cross country trip back home though allows Dingo and Celee to grow their burgeoning attraction in a heartbreaking, gritty, and suspenseful journey.  Because of their mutually painful pasts, pasts that brought a tear to my eye, neither thought they'd ever have a family.  But with each turn of the page they realize that family is what you make of it.  With her past racing ever closer though, with the secrets and lies getting ready to explode in Club member's faces, she just might have realized the truth about love and HEA too late.

Dingo and Celee are a compelling couple with pasts that broke my heart while reading their backstories.  Neither thought themselves worthy of family or love, so it was immensely empowering to see them embrace the support of their found family, support that is needed now more than ever as lives are on the line due to the danger surrounding her.  I loved seeing so many characters and couples from previous books and found my heart warmed by the unwavering support they promised to Celee in a journey full of heart pounding action and twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat.  Overall this is a raw and gritty book that doesn't pull any punches.  In between these moments though is a romance that is sizzling yet intimate, one that builds slowly but strongly to weather all the danger befalling them.  From start to finish readers will be captivated, begging this author to write faster as the wait between books is becoming more and more painful!

My rating for this is an A.

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

D.M. Earl continues to thrill with this exhilarating cross country road trip that brings together four prospects who leave their mark with each mile they travel.  From the very start this story amps up the excitement as Hannah, Kitty, Dani and Dotty decide to head to Texas for a book signing without consent from their Club Prez.  These prospects are determined to live life to the fullest, be bold while supporting each other unconditionally, and I loved watching their interactions with all their Girl Power glory.

This story completely captivated me, pushed every one of my emotional buttons on a rollercoaster ride of oohs, aahs, and oh mys!  I gasped with the dramatic twists and turns, clapped with the cleverly crafted reveals, and laughed while watching these four young women get answers to the mysteries they stumble across.  Some of those mysteries are fun while some are a bit more impactful to the storyline.  Add in interactions with other Clubs, as well as the Devil's Handmaidens catching up to the wayward prospects, and things turn even more suspenseful and exhilarating.  This story definitely stands strongly on its own, but I recommend reading the previous two installments in the Devil's Handmaiden MC series to see the early interactions of these prospects as well as getting more insight into some of Tink and Zoey's actions here. Seeing so many secondary characters leant a familial vibe to this story, a family not of blood but by unconditional support that will keep me coming back for more.  On a whole readers will find this a decadent delight, a tale that makes the perfect reread, giving a little something to every reader.  After so many emotionally intense stories I found this the kind of book that cleanses the palate, leaving me feeling immensely satisfied...and for this I give D.M. Earl much appreciation!

Now I am called to testify against the men who kidnapped me and the gorgeous, infuriating man I tried so hard to forget is assigned to protect me. I want answers and he refuses to give them.
But as much as he claims to hate me too, I see the way his eyes linger on my skin. How his hands itch to reach out. He understands me in a way I’ve never let another man get close enough to know. My scars, physical and emotional, are a constant reminder of the girl I used to be.
A girl I try to forget.
As we travel across the country, the tension and simmering heat becomes unbearable. He’s pushing me outside my comfort zone while I’m desperately searching for control––until I realize Scott is more than willing to give it to me.

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

When it comes to family dynamics Ms. Ryan is one of the best in creating close knit clans.  With her latest series she continues that tradition with the Montgomery family and the up and down emotional rollercoaster ride they take readers on.

Brenna Garrett was once closer than close with Beckett Montgomery...or so she thought, until she realized the secrets he was keeping and the need to finally find out who she is on her own.  A road trip to a family reunion sounds like the perfect time to rethink things, but her plans go awry when a face familiar to her joins her on the road.  Benjamin Montgomery, Beckett's twin, has his own answers he's seeking and decides that hanging with Brenna will help him make some important decisions in this emotional tale of starting over.  When a drunken night of togetherness leads to an unexpected pregnancy, these two will have to navigate newfound feelings that pulled at my heartstrings with each turn of the page.  From the moment these two started interacting it was clear that they had strong chemistry, chemistry that led to their unexpected night.

Benjamin's a stand up guy, a guy with a positive connection to his ex and an attraction to Brenna that he's never acknowledged before.  Deep down he knows the answers he seeks but spending time with Brenna is something he wants.  For Brenna, she's tired of people thinking she's broken up over Beckett falling for someone else, when in fact she's more upset over the secrets he kept from her and it's those feelings that weigh on her when she looks at Benjamin.  Throughout their trip together these two are very open and honest with their concerns and doubts, bringing them closer together until their unexpected night together.  From that moment on things changed irrevocably and though Benjamin is all-in, Brenna's a bit more blind to what's right in front of her which frustrated me a bit.  Despite a bit of frustration with Brenna, their journey was a sweet and heartwarming one, one full of emotions and featuring two appealing characters who I was rooting for every step of the way.  Interspersed with the decision-making of this appealing pair are glimpses of other family members and the unexpected events happening to them too.  Paige especially has me intrigued with what happened to her at the end of the story and I look forward to her story being told next in this well-written addition to the Montgomery clan series!

My rating for this is a B+

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

The moment I started reading this book is the moment I knew I was in for the ride of a lifetime as the death of their "father" leads to an unforgettable night for a compelling pair, a night of giving into temptation followed by an uncomfortable road trip that opens up painful wounds.  For Emma and Link, this is a tale full of angst as the author deals with mental health in vivid detail.  But it's also a heartwarming tale of acceptance and love that pulled at my heartstrings.

As a rockstar Emma seems to have it all, but beneath the glitz and glam surface is a woman struggling with self-worth.  Courtesy of a childhood seeped in abandonment Emma's always felt unworthy of love and that she's destined to be alone.  These feelings are compounded by a mental illness that becomes blatantly obvious as the story progresses.  Emma's a heartbreaking character with a past that broke my heart and a vividly depicted mental illness that involved self-harm, depression, and even more self-destructive behavior fueled by Link's rejection of her after their night together.  Their road trip together led to some emotional talks along with a time of closeness that Emma relished, a time that showed her vulnerabilities that had me wanting to hug her.

Link seems to be her opposite as a man who shows himself capable and self-sufficient. He's riddled with guilt though over his long-term attraction to Emma, an attraction he gave into during a moment of grief and that has him ultimately rejecting Emma in an act that frustrated me.  During their road trip he was at war with himself over perceived obligations to his father as well as what he himself wanted.  Add in her mental health issues, and his concerns over if he can truly have a relationship with her, and it all makes for a story full of angst.  Throughout the story Link was a man slow to let others in and I was grateful for his friends in Shattered Cove who pushed him to listen to his heart when it came to Emma.  He eventually showed himself to be a real hero, a supportive and protective man, in words and deeds that warmed my heart.

Though this is the sixth installment in the Shattered Cove series it stands strongly on its own in its dealings with mental health.  It's a tale full of angst, a story that doesn't pull any punches when it comes to depicting the depression and self-harming aspects of mental illness.  It's a romance that's sweet and scorching at times, a romance that pulls at my heartstrings while ultimately making for a richly rewarding romance.  This was my first time reading A.M. Kusi but it definitely won't be my last as this was a powerful romance with a compelling main couple who I'm still thinking of!

My rating for this is an A.

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

From the very first page it's clear that this isn't your typical rockstar romance.  The moment readers are introduced to Quinn Michaelson is the start of a captivating read of living life to the fullest, discovering more about yourself while finding a connection to another when you least expect it.  The journey Quinn undertakes is one full of tears and empowerment, a journey that I quickly became invested in as Quinn is an unforgettable heroine, and with each turn of the page it pulled at my heartstrings too.

Quinn's lived in her small hometown her entire life, never wanting to go after what's beyond the edge of town...but when life hands her an unexpected bit of news she decides it's time to finally start experiencing life.  With her grandfather's journal as her guide she sets off on a journey of self-discovery down Route 66.  Along the way she ends up with a rockstar as her traveling companion as their journey becomes even more personal with romance starting to shine through.  I adored Quinn and found much of myself in her personality.  She's a likable heroine who's always had dreams, she just lacked the courage to go after those dreams.  Having someone with her on her journey helps push her to continue chasing her dreams, while helping her open up about herself in a sweet and sentimental journey that has the main couple evolving from friends into something more.

Rhett Kennedy's at the top of the music world, enjoying a life of women and travel in support of his music.  He's always lived life to the fullest, but lately he's feeling unfulfilled.  He's feeling lost amidst all the demands placed on him by his record label and decides to take time off to again find his muse...and lucky for him he ends up being Quinn's traveling companion.  Their journey sees him acting as a strong support to Quinn, gently pushing her to embrace life, while at the same time he finds himself falling for her in a slow-burn romance of friends to lovers.  Rhett's a delicious hero, a sexy and drool-worthy rockstar not afraid to show his feelings.  He's sweet yet more than capable of being naughty as he flirted his way into Quinn's heart while letting her take the lead throughout their journey.  He's exactly what you want in a hero and he's the latest addition to my book boyfriend list.

This was a beautiful story from start to finish.  It was emotional, with bits of angst and moments of charm that kept me glued to the pages.  The journey itself was charming too as they went from one small town to one kitschy tourist site after another, meeting all sorts of eclectic people along the way.  These two apparent opposites found much to bring them together as both were looking for something more...little did they know that what they were looking for was right beside them all along.  Throughout their journey they engaged in heartfelt talks, moments of empowerment that had them fighting for what they wanted, and with time running out they had some big decisions to work through too.  Theirs was ultimately a sweet and sensual connection that warmed my heart, pulled at my heartstrings, and put a smile of satisfaction on my face courtesy of its flawless epilogue.  This is not your typical rockstar romance which makes it a romance readers shouldn't miss and I wholeheartedly recommend it!

My rating for this is an A.
