Book Tour for No Matter When by Nancy Adams (Review & GIVEAWAY)

Today I'm bringing to you a book with a unique blend of time travel and sci-fi with No Matter When by Nancy Adams.  Keep reading to get a glimps of this book, along with my impressions of it, as well as the author's views on the sci-fi genre.  Make sure to leave a comment about your favorite work of sci-fi for your chance to win a $20 Amazon GC and a copy of this book!

TSP:  What draws readers to the sci-fi genre?
NA:  I think science fictions has such a huge fan base because of the possibility of what might be. Like...maybe somewhere a boy-genius is building a time machine in his parents’ garden shed. Or maybe scientistsreally are working on a serum for a super soldier. Or maybe my dog is a cyborg from another plant...I have seen the odd tentacle coming out of his ear.
That’s the beauty of science fiction, anything is possible, and when writing sci-fi you can let your imagination run free.
Except that tentacle, that was real, I swear. LOL
TSP:  What are some of your favorite sci-fi shows/movies and how did they influence your work?
NA:  Some of my favourite sci-fi shows eh? How much time do you have? Lol Okay I’ll just tell you my top 5.
5) G-Force (cartoon) I was crushing on the lead Jason. Give me a break I was 6 when this was on.
4) V – the mini series – alien invaders and rebel uprising...loved it!
3) Quantum Leap – HELLO, Time travel! Need I say more?
2) Buck Rogers – Again I was young and again I had another crush. But come on...an Astronaut from the ’80 frozen for 500 years only to wakeup in the future and save earth from the evil princess. Awesome! And I just loved that little robot Twiki.
1) Dr. Who – Time Travel, aliens, cybermen, shape shifters and who can forget the Daleks...Exterminate! Exterminate!  LOL This show has it all. I watched it when I was young and I still watch it today.

Well, I guess you can tell what type of science fiction tickles my fancy. There are just too many possibilities when it comes to sci-fi.
Huh! I never considered myself a hardcore fan-girl, but looking at my list, I guess I am. Lol!

Standing on the battlements of a 16th century Keep was the last place Gabriel Sutherland should be. Then again, being ‘shifted’ to 1503 seconds before a rocket blew his ass to bits wasn’t something he had envisioned either. Still, he was surviving the only way he knew how, as a soldier. Then Lilly arrived. Sweet, innocent Lilly. For a genetically superior soldier whose life had entailed of nothing but serving King and country, the arrival of Lilly proves too much for Gabe to ignore. For the first time in his life, Gabe can have a woman of his own and Lilly is the one.
Lilly Marten lives alone, her quiet life the result of a highly sensitive photographic memory. That changed when she arrived in the year 1503 seconds before Toronto’s popular C.N Tower came crashing down on top of her. Now she was never alone. Gabe was always near. With his unbelievably perfect features and intense green eyes, he is not a man easily ignored. Yet, uncertainty about her new life leaves Lilly with no choice but to put faith in a man she fears and whose strong physical presence causes her to desire more than just his trust.

EXCERPT:

“What changed?”
“My perspective.” He looked seriously at her. “It’s you. You’re what’s changed, for me. I haven’t thought about the life I used to have since you arrived.”
Gabe lowered his mouth to the centre of her chest and pressed his lips to the skin above her heart. Lilly was the reason his perspective had changed. She was the reason he wanted to stay here. Her sweet innocence and natural beauty were only two reasons he no longer craved the life he used to have. “If you left…” He had to be careful how he explained what he felt without scaring her. “I’d be very upset.”
“You’d be upset if I went home?”
“You can’t go home, Lilly.”
He sighed when she slid her eyes away from his. She didn’t get what he was saying, or rather trying to say. He tried another tactic. “I came from a time when love was unimportant. People were matched together according to their genetic profiles—the goal was to produce a generation without health-related issues who excelled in all academic and physical tests.”
“The perfect human?” Her lashes lifted like two small wings.
“Yes, the perfect human. There wasn’t any type of attraction or love in my life. I never thought about it, never worried about it—until now. I won’t allow you to get lost, out there”—he nodded to the world beyond the room, then touched her temple—“or in here. And if by some chance it happens, I’ll find you and bring you back.”

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

In her latest book, Ms. Adams offers a little something to every reader through a story dealing with themes raging from sci-fi to time travel to futuristic.  While this makes for an intriguing read that keeps you guessing it does lead to a bit of confusion at times as the story moves from one fantastical element to the next.  Thankfully, even when I'm confused, there's a cast of characters that are likable and keep me invested in the outcome of the story.

Lilly has felt lost and alone since the death of her mother and has been waiting for death.  The bombing of the place she works gives her what she wants until she wakes up during medieval times after being rescued by the sexy and heroic Gabe who's immediately drawn to her but has secrets of his own.  Lilly discovers she's a pawn in a futuristic plan to kill those in power during this time period which puts her in close proximity to the mysterious Gabe and have her rethinking a future she never thought she'd have.  Lilly is sweet and loyal but naive and flighty when she gets lost in her thoughts.  She engenders feelings of protectiveness in all the men brought back in time and this had me wishing I was in here place.

Gabe comes from a time in the future where genetic enhancements are the norm which has made him a super soldier.  His senses are enhanced and he's looked up to as what every soldier aspires to be.  He thinks nothing of his abilities though beyond what Lilly will feel when she discovers the truth about him.  He's a quiet man immediately drawn to Lilly who wants nothing more than to keep her safe and make her happy.  Gabe is the perfect romantic hero saying all the right things and burning up the sheets with the unworldly Lilly.

The author realistically and vividly depicted medieval times to draw you into the story early on.  The reason for bringing these individuals back in time results in bigger truths being revealed that lead to ramifications for the future.  The sci-fi part of the story is intriguing but feels separate from the character's time in the past and will make for a thrilling basis for any future stories.  The secondary characters are immensely likable with their brotherly interactions and I long to see more of them in the future.  From start to finish this is a story full of intriguing themes and a sweet and sexy romance between a perfectly matched couple and fans of many genres will be drawn to it.

My rating for this is a C+

AUTHOR INFO:

My name is Nancy Adams. I am a full-blooded Canadian, right down to the maple syrup running though my veins. I enjoy watching hockey but despise skating...and the cold. I enjoy a good helping of Tourtiere with a side of Poutine as much as the next person, yet I am only bilingual when it comes to swear words.Besides writing, I have three small - but legal - addictions: bed linens, lavender and books. All of which are replenished on a regular basis. Reading into the wee hours of the morning is one of my many bad habits, next to spontaneously rearranging furniture and randomly painting rooms in my house.

  5. Hmmm...I don't personally watch a lot of Sci-Fi these days but did get addicted to Stargate Atlantis when my dad was watching it. (He was the SciFi fan of the family.) Stargate SG1 was another we watched together. We grew up watching Dr. Who with him, the old ones so I love Tom Baker & Peter Davidson! He would be tickled that the grandkids are fans of the new episodes. <3 David Tennant!
Quantum Leap is probably my favorite though. I can still say the opening dialogue by heart & my fave episode is "The Leap Home"!
I need to explore the books from this genre. :)

  7. An excellent post! To both you Nancy and you Scarf Princess...not sure your real name ;) I really loved sci-fi and you are totally right about why it exists. I mean...when you're a kid, sci-fi is kind of the thing you love to think about right? Aliens and time machines, and all sorts of other stuff! THanks so much for sharing!

  10. I, too, am a Whovian and a fan of Dr. Sam Beckett in his quest to make that final leap home. My favorite is probably Firefly. Last Christmas, I bought my hubby the Babylon 5 series on DVD. This year, I might get us the Farscape series. I AM sci-fi!
