Gabby James didn’t have the idyllic childhood many in her little hometown of Renlend, Kansas had. High school was a living hell, but when she graduated she couldn’t bring herself to leave Renlend. The town was her prison, but her family’s bookstore, The Looking Glass, was her one true love. It was the place she could run to, and escape the prying eyes of the ones who taunted her.
Shane Compton was a literary agent in one of the most prestigious publishing houses in New York City. He found no greater rush than finding the next big talent, someone who could take the written word and turn it into an art form. In the span of one rude phone call Shane was drawn into the mystery of just who the fiery new author from Kansas was. When everyone else in the office refused to deal with her, Shane willingly accepted the challenge. There was no logic to the madness, but every time he had contact with her, she drove him wild.
Gabby tried every trick in the book to keep Shane at arm’s length, but he had made good on his promise to come to Kansas. He wanted to pull her out of anonymity, he wanted her in the public eye. Now here he stood, on the sidewalk in front her bookstore, and one look told her he was everything she was afraid he’d be. Too bad she was anything but who he thought she was.
Gabby quickly discovers Shane has more on his mind than just books and with a little help from an ornery matchmaker, he shows her a whole new life through her looking glass.

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

Those looking for a book to put a smile on their face will get just that with Ms. Gregory's latest installment in her Finding Perfect series.  From start to finish readers embark on a pleasant journey towards HEA for two seemingly different people from vastly diiferent worlds.  Over five years of phone calls and emails though it's apparent that they have a bond, one that the hero easily accepts but the heroine fights every step of the way.

That heroine is Gabby who's still hurting from her unhappy experiences in high school due to a petty ex-friend and the bullying mentality of those wanting to be part of the cool group.  It's caused her to close her emotions off and not trust anyone.  Her only haven then and now is her writings, along with the little old man who lives down the street.  The only times in her life where she truly opened up about her feelings was with him and in the pages of the manuscripts she was constantly writing.  This is what kept her sane as her parents couldn't understand the depth of her unhappiness.  Gabby's a bit gruff at times, tells it like it is, and doesn't suffer fools.  She's a tough girl with a strong wall around her and it will take a strong man to win her over but I couldn't help but like her as she's extremely loyal and caring to those she cares about.

That man is the sexy and charming Shane who fell in love with her the first time he read her writings.  He saw her soul in those pages and over five years bared his to her.  He came from a cold family where he was seen as a disappointment where work at the publishing house felt more like a home than that of his parents.  He's never truly felt a part of something though until he meets Gabby in person and from there makes the grandest gesture ever to prove his devotion to her that left me giddy.  They're the perfect match as he lets her be as gruff as she wants as he's the one charming others in her place.  Their love of books brought them together and it's where they've made the first REAL home he's ever had which added even more warm fuzzies to an already very HEA.

The banter between Gabby and Shane was rapid-fire, snarky, and fun in its obvious foreplay.  The actual sexual interludes are more on the sweet side but no less satisfying.  Small town living is vividly depicted in all its charm and unfortunately annoying stereotypes.  One of those stereotypes being the snotty ex-friend from high school who's still nasty, petty and immature and I truly wish her role were edited out as it ruins the heartwarmingly delightful vibe this story had going on from the start.  The brightest spot of the small town though is John who was a charming character and his matchmaking utterly endearing.  He and Gabby's interactions were priceless and brought a tear to my eye in its realism.  From start to finish I was completely immersed in this book though the action was predictable.  The banter between Shane and Gabby is what kept me enthralled as did his being the quintessential hero.  The glimpse we're given of the next book in this series has me very excited as it appears equally charming and I'm counting down the days until its release.  If you've not read this series yet, now's the ime to start!

My rating for this is a B+

AUTHOR INFO:

When asked ‘when do you have time to write’, Amy Gregory simply laughs.  The real answer is, “in bits and pieces”.  She and her husband live in Kansas City with their three fantastic kids that keep them running in three very different directions.  Because she sits so much, she always carries a notebook with her at all times.
She has an off the wall, snarky, off the cuff sense of humor that often shocks even those who’ve known her for years.  And she loves that her children have all been blessed that ability to make others laugh as well.  At least she’s grateful most of the time!  Her husband often teases her about how she “makes this stuff up” when he’s reading a piece of her work. … The answer—“it just comes to me when I’m typing”. Scary thought, huh!
