Ellie Parker is a master at building walls around her heart. In the twenty-five years she’s been alive, Dex Remington has been the only person who has always believed in her and been there for her. But four years earlier, she came to Dex seeking comfort and then disappeared like a thief in the night, leaving him a broken man.
Dex Remington is one of the top PC game developers in the United States. He’s handsome, smart, and numb. So damn numb that he’s not sure he’ll ever find a reason to feel again.
A chance encounter sparks intense desires in Ellie and Dex. Desires that make her want to run—and make him want to feel. A combination of lust and fear leads these young lovers down a dangerous path. Is it possible to cross a burned bridge, or are they destined to be apart forever?

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

As the first book in a new series featuring the Remington family of siblings Ms. Foster has crafted a close-knit family of talented individuals at the top of their chosen careers who feel incomplete.  With the brief glimpses we get of the siblings they're all successful but feel as if their lives have become shallow and they want to find something more meaningful.

For Dex, the video game creator, he wants to create games that get people thinking instead of making them couch potatoes.  What he needs to make that happen though is inspiration.....which returns after yet again vanishing without a word.  Ellie is the girl he's always loved and wanted to protect since they were kids.  He saw the pain she hid behind silence and wanted to help ease that pain, but every time they got close she ran and his heart broke a little bit more.  In true heroic form though he never completely gave up on her and when she comes running back to town he's there to help her when she needs him most.  Dex is an admirable and chivalrous man who put up with a lot of grief from Ellie.  All he wanted was honesty from her but it was a constant struggle to get it.  Luckily for her he never gave up or walked away like she did.  He admired her strength in surviving and appreciated the support she gave him in his youth in his career choice when his father did not.  He still admires her even as she frustrates him though.

Ellie had a tough time growing up and it hardened her heart.  Her mother's addictions and uncaring attitude when she was young made Ellie feel unwanted and the abuse she suffered in foster care made her feel unlovable.  With one bad thing happening to her after another, Dex is the one bright spot and she couldn't help but rely on him.  She thinks all she brings is chaos though which has her running when things start to get intense between her and Dex as she doesn't want him hurt.  She knows her running hurts him but she knows of no other way to be as running has become her first instinct.  As he pushes her to open up and let him in, and as things start to get better for her, a nasty piece of her past comes back to cause problems for their fragile burgeoning relationship.  Will she run again or stand beside Dex as he slays her demons once again?  While I felt sympathetic for everything Ellie went through I was left frustrated by her using Dex time and time again.  All he wanted was honesty from her and she still left certain things out, things that put both them and their HEA in jeopardy.  Ultimately I wish she'd been as dedicated to him as he was to her.

Their relationship was heartbreaking and poignant from their first meeting.  Seeing their closeness evolve from then to now fully immersed me in their difficult journey to HEA and demonstrated why Dex fought so hard for her and why she always came back to him.  From the moment they reunited the sexual tension between them became palpable and evolved into some very hot and heavy sexual interludes.  The pace of the story was a bit slow early on as Ellie wallowed in guilt but it allowed Dex to take center stage along with his supportive friends (who have compelling backgrounds too).  The ending felt a bit rushed though with a villain from Ellie's past making a barely-there appearance before the quickly wrapped-up conclusion.  Ultimately though I enjoyed this story, especially Dex, and look forward to learning more about the other Remington siblings.

My rating for this is a B +
