The Montgomery Ink series continues with the brother that deserves a second chance, and the woman who has always loved him.
Alex Montgomery lost his first love and then proceeded to leave himself in the bottle. Only he and his ex-wife truly know why he fell so hard and so fast down a path he never thought he’d take. Now he’s clean, out of rehab, and learning how to be a Montgomery once again—a task that isn’t quite as easy as some of his family assumes.
Tabby Collins is an honorary Montgomery and the organizational mastermind behind Montgomery Inc., the family’s construction company. She loves her planners, friends, and a certain dark-haired man who’s never given her a second glance.
Alex is slowly re-immersing himself back into the world, but the demons he faced before aren’t out of the picture, and he’ll have to learn to rely on others to make it out whole. When Alex discovers that Tabby’s life is in danger, he not only finds a way to help her but also learns the true woman behind the soft smiles he’s always seen. Their romance won’t be an easy one, but nothing this passionate and heart-pounding ever is.

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

Addiction is a tough topic to deal with, for the addict and for their family, and weighs heavily on the hero of this latest installment in the Montgomery Ink series.  It's a tale that pulls at the heartstrings while warming hearts over the words and deeds of the Montgomery family in the recovery of Alexander.  Fans of this series will find this a satisfying read in a long line of satisfying reads while new readers will find themselves quickly wrapped up in the warm blanket the lives of this dedicated family offers.

Marrying at a young age and experiencing numerous betrayals by his wife through their years together left Alexander a broken man, relying on alcohol to deal with his pain.  During that time he hurt his family by not embracing the love they so freely give and by leaving them full of fear over his future.  His stint in rehab has given him a whole new outlook on life though that has him trying to make amends to his family while trying to rejuvenate a career that floundered with his drinking.  His recovery isn't without issues though as he's teeming with guilt over his family, and all the years of bonding he lost, along with fears that he could easily trade one addiction for another.  It leads to lots of internal tension that's palpable to the reader.  Connecting with Tabitha helps release some of those stresses as she's his biggest cheerleader and gives him a reason to not give into those bad temptations.  Alex is a sexy man with a good heart whose prior acts make him feel unworthy of forgiveness.  His family is tight-knit but he feels separate from them, punishing himself needlessly, and it all had me feeling sympathetic towards him.  He feels unworthy of Tabitha early on but events soon have her clinging to him and have him doing whatever's necessary to keep her safe in a burgeoning relationship that makes both of them stronger.  Being with her also brings out a more playful side to him, a side that shows his talent for talking dirty, in a relationship that's scorching and sweet.

Tabitha comes from a tight-knit family too and left home because of feeling smothered.  Working for the Montgomery family though gave her a whole new clan to watch over her incessantly as the men of this family treat her like their sister and have her a part of their family dinners.  She's seen Alexander at his worst and cared for him from afar despite all the hurts he caused.  Now that he's clean he's starting to see her in a whole new light in a burgeoning relationship that has both of them revealing deep-seated secrets to each other. When readers first meet Tabitha she's living a life with every minute planned, devoted to work but not fully living.  A past relationship, and the way it ended, weighs on her too and has her putting herself in jeopardy to try to make things right.  After a disgruntled customer leaves her battered and bruised Alexander makes it his mission to teach her self-defense which leads to close quarters and increasingly scorching encounters.  Theirs is a relationship full of self-doubts, but together they find unquestioning support in a connection that makes them a perfect match.  Tabitha's immensely kindhearted and enjoys taking care of others, making herself an intragel part of the Montgomery business where she's very self-assured.  Outside of work though there's a sense of naivete that frustrated me.  From moments of pouting to not being cautious when putting herself in danger annoyed me a bit too.  For the most part, while she was not my favorite heroine, she's just what Alexander needed to regain his sense of self-worth.

The entire Montgomery clan was out in full force in this book which reinforced their strong sense of family.  They're a supportive and forgiving group and the interactions amongst themselves were heartwarming and playful while Alexander finding his way back to them brought a tear to my eye.  He and Tabitha were a compelling couple who found strength in their love for each other which started out sweet but quickly evolved into scorching erotic encounters that brought out her sex kitten side.  The danger that befell Tabitha though came out of nowhere and felt a bit over-the-top.  It felt like a manipulative plot device to bring her and Alexander together which frustrated me as there was already enough emotional baggage drawing them to each other.  Along with this engaging main couple there were the rest of the unmarried Montgomery's, along with her brothers, leaving their marks on the narrative.  They're a strong-willed group with HEAs just starting to be hinted at which has me looking towards the future with anticipation.  I'm especially excited for Storm's story to be told as his feelings for the wife of his dead friend, and single mom, Everly are quite clear...to everyone but themselves.  With the Montgomery Ink series Ms. Ryan has crafted a family that feels like your own. They're an endearing group whose heartbreak easily becomes ours and who readers cheer for every step of the way and I look forward to revisiting them again soon.

My rating for this is a B.
