Once upon a time, when Quincy Hannigan needed saving, he was there to hold her hand. Years have passed since she was that weak, broken girl; instead, a strong, intelligent woman stands in her place. She’s making the world a better place one arrest at a time and has everything she’s always wanted—except Judson Rivers.
When Judson’s father died suddenly, he dropped out of college and became a Navy SEAL. He left everything from his old life behind, including the girl he loved, but never told—Quincy. After ten years, Judson’s military career ends abruptly when the vehicle he’s in runs over an IED. He has his hands full learning to live with one leg, PTSD and a civilian life he wasn’t ready to return to.
Judson and Quincy are reunited when their mentor dies. Once Quincy realizes the depth of his pain, she knows it’s her turn to be the savior. Years of pent-up passion are unleashed, but it may be too late if Judson can’t crawl out of hell. Quincy has every intention of healing this wounded warrior before his demons are the ones who determine his fate.

EXCERPT:

I turn the knob and step inside. Relaxed on the love seat by the bay window, she lifts her eyes to mine. Her legs are curled up under her, hair still up, book in hand and she’s now wearing a pair of sexy black-framed librarian glasses. I feel a stirring in my pants and the shock of it must register on my face because her forehead wrinkles as she asks, “Are you okay?"
I’d love to tell her I’m great, but I don’t think she’d be quite as impressed by the beginnings of a hard-on as I am. This is the first time I’ve had any kind of action down there since the accident. The doctor told me not to worry about it, the function would eventually return, it’s mental more than physical, but I was afraid it never would. For a guy my age, no blood flow to the dick is a terrifying thought.
I cross my hands down low, trying to discreetly cover up. She’d never understand. Who gets a boner the same day he buries someone close to him?
“Yeah, I’m okay. I just wanted to come and say goodbye."
She lifts the glasses from her face and sets them on top of the book she’s placed on the table next to where she’s seated. When she stands and takes a few steps toward me I realize my heart is pounding harder than it was when I knocked on the door, like I’ve run a few miles. It’s been far too long since I’ve had this kind of reaction to a woman.
“How long are you staying?” I inquired.
“A couple of weeks. I promised the Colonel I’d help Ms. Polly take care of everything. We have to go through some things out in the shed this week too. Are you leaving to go back East right away?"
“No. I’m moving back here. I’m staying at one of those extended stay hotels by the interstate until I can find something. If you need help going through any of his stuff or lifting some of those things, let me know. I don’t have a lot on my schedule yet."
Her head tilts and her eyes narrow like she’s trying to figure out if my offer is genuine.
I lift up my hands in a gesture of surrender as I say, “I’m not saying you can’t do it, just that I’m available if you want help. I’ll write my cell number down and you can use it, or not."
She watches me intently as I jot down my number and leave it on the table. Then I walk back over, place my hands on her shoulders, kiss her forehead, lingering a little longer than I should so I can absorb the scent of her again, and limp out the door. I don’t wait to see if she has anything to say or any reaction to the chaste kiss. My heart and body both ache and I wish I were a different man. A better man. One that could have a woman as beautiful and amazing as she is and be worthy of her.

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

Two people with painful pasts find themselves reconnecting upon the death of their mentor in this emotionally intense story full of scorching interludes and a suspenseful conclusion.  From start to finish readers will find themselves quickly consumed with the path these two lost souls end up on as the love they finally admit to takes them in unexpected directions.  By the final turn of the page readers will be left cheering and yet ready for more as we're introduced to a small cast of secondary characters who are deserving of their own HEAs.

Judson once had it all as a dutiful son with a pretty, blond girlfriend.  Upon the death of his father though everything unraveled and the best choice left to him was to become a Navy SEAL.  Before being deployed he has matters of the heart to deal with as he ends thing with one girl while admitting his long-held feelings for another girl, Quinn, who becomes his friend and his lover.  His time on foreign soil is a lonely period as he tries to put Quinn behind him but a severe injury brings her to his side for a brief moment of joy before he returns home a broken man.  Drugs and alcohol soon become his only solace in scenes that are heartbreaking and hard to read for the feelings of desperation depicted. With Quinn by his side, committed to him, Judson rises from his lonely and mentally bruised past to become a beacon of hope.  He's embarrassed by the loss of his leg and his scars early on and sees himself as only half a man, but through Quinn's unconditional love he sees himself in a whole new light.  He wanted to be a better man for Quinn and he accomplished that wholeheartedly to become a sexy man talented at dirty talk who slowly endeared himself to me through his words and deeds.

Quinn seemed to have everything going for her until a lying college boy and an unplanned pregnancy left her broken inside, mentally and physically.  From that moment on she was on a self-destructive path that Judson finally saved her from as it was the first sign of his feelings for her.  He changed her life irrevocably, driving her to make a success out of herself, but also breaking her heart along the way.  Finding each other again leads to mutual support and big life changes that keep readers on the edge of their seats as the story picks up steam and races towards its exciting conclusion.  Quinn was devastated by certain events during her time in college which I found easy to understand as it's a very trying time.  Her commitment to sobriety though never fails and it's this that makes her a solid support when Judson's most in need of help.  Quinn's a strong-willed woman, sure in her life choices, but as her heart softens courtesy of melodramatic events befalling a child she starts embracing her more girly side when it comes to love and family.

Quinn and Judson are a powerful couple as they've both experienced rough times in life and survived.  They've been in love forever and it's quite obvious how in sync they are as even when no words are spoken they understand each other completely.  The romance between them was a scorching one as evidenced by the numerous erotic encounters that burned up the pages.  Issues of addiction are addressed with an unflinching hand too that pulled me into Judson's plight and had me aching for how far he'd fallen for just doing his duty. The time line was a bit jumpy at first but once the story got settled I found it very easy to immerse myself in all the highs and lows.  Issues of domestic abuse and the foster care system were also touched on and depicted in a very realistic and heartbreaking light.  The young Carlo's introduction added much melodrama to the story, a bit of it unnecessary in my opinion, but it did open up Quinn's heart to many possibilities she ignored before to make for a truly HEA. Along with a compelling main couple came a small cast of secondary characters who were often on the periphery but who were a supportive group when things got really bad.  One among them, Dex, intrigued me completely and the sad past he hinted at has me longing to hear his story when it's told in the next installment.  He's a large yet quiet man who's fiercely protective of kids and who deserves some happiness to bring him out of his stoic demeanor.  All in all this was a satisfying series starter that takes readers on a very emotional journey and I look forward to revisiting this gritty yet sensual world Ms. Lynn's crafted.

My rating for this is a B+
