A Sad Weekend for Whovians........

Doctor Who fans worldwide went into mourning yesterday as it was announced that Matt Smith, the number 11 Doctor, will be leaving the show at the end of the year.  I will always be a fangirl of David Tennant (Doctor #10) but Matt Smith stepped into some really big shoes and made the part his own.  I enjoyed his comedic and emotional sides as each fought for dominance throughout each episode and ultimately I looked forward to his expressive face each week.

The search now commences for an actor to take over what can be considered a career-defining role.  Anybody have any actors they'd like to see in the role?  Here are some of my choices (yes, some are REALLY big wishes).......

Martin Freeman:

Was charismatic in The Hobbit and proves he's good at dealing with a mystery ala Sherlock and is currently working with Steven Moffatt on that show.

Aidan Turner:

Was wonderful in Being Human, showing a wide range of emotions amidst different time periods.  He's smolderingly sexy with a to die for Irish accent....and isn't it time for an Irish Doctor?

Richard Armitage:

Extremely charismatic with a huge fan following already. Suave and debonair and as seen in The Hobbit he's more than capable in action scenes.

Benedict Cumberbatch:

Is a commanding presence in Steven Moffat's Sherlock and shows he can be a leader.  Can show a bloodthirsty, yet Shakespearean side, as seen in the recent Star Trek movie.  That movie also shows someone who can deal with the intricacies of sci-fi along with coping with a rabid fan base.

Robert Downey Jr:

My biggest wish.....He has a proven ability to mix humor with action. Very expressive with his facial expressions and agile when it comes to action scenes.  Is extremely charismatic and the public utterly loves him!  Also capable of dealing with a vocal fan base and has shown talent with both historical and contemporary settings.

So what do you think of my choices?  Can you see any of them as the next Doctor?  Sound off below and name some choices of your own as we eagerly await the announcement which should come by late this year......

New Who Tonight!!!!!!!

After the tears finally stopped falling due to our fond farewell to the Pond's, I'm excited to welcome back Doctor Who tonight with his new Companion Clara (Jenna-Louise Coleman).  Ms. Coleman left me intrigued after her two previous visits to DW and I have high hopes that she'll make for a delightful Companion.  She's bubbly and her interactions with the Doctor (Matt Smith) previously were crackling with a slight sexual tension between the two.  He's more than met his match, that's for sure.  The synopsis of the next seven episodes sound amazing and I can't wait to see all the running.  What about you?  Are you excited for the return of Doctor Who?

Review for Star Trek:The Next Generation/Doctor Who:Assimilation 2 Volume 2 by Scott Tipton, David Tipton, et al.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard faces one of the most difficult decisions of his life, but the fate of the galaxy may depend on it! Can the Doctor convince him to make the correct choice?

********************

The story continues in this second installment of the Doctor Who/Star Trek:The Next Generation crossover as the battle against the Borg and the Cyberman (two of the memorable villains from each series) gets underway.  After a brief alliance, the Borg realize the Cyberman aren't to be trusted and do the unexpected by joining forces with the good guys.  As a fan of both of these shows I found their pairing to be very natural. The interactions between the characters were entertaining and reflected each character correctly.  The storyline itself was clever with a nice bit of action that kept you on the edge of your seat.  Events that happened on the television shows were also seamlessly incorporated into the story and was a special treat to fans.

As to the artwork, I felt most characters were perfectly represented, particularly The Doctor and Captain Picard. Amy and Rory however didn't fair as well.  They say that the camera adds ten pounds and in this case it's the drawing that does.  Their speech also felt a bit off. The witty banter they're known for was missing. Though I didn't get the chance to read the previous installment it was easy to pick up on what happened previously.  It was easy to jump right into the action without missing a beat.

As this story ends with a cliffhanger I'll definitely have to pick up the next story in this series.  Overall, I'm impressed with the characterizations and the pulse pounding storyline.  The creators have much to be proud of as this is a delightful treat to fans and non-fans alike.

My rating for this is an A.

*I received this from NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

The joyousness of the holiday continues with the release of a new Doctor Who trailer promoting its Christmas episode featuring a new companion to the Doctor.  Not only that but there's a minisode creating a bit of intrigue leading into the Christmas episode entitled, The Snowmen.  I love the look of it: a darker and depressed Doctor, old familiar faces, and an exuberant new companion.  So watch below for the trailer and minisode and start the countdown with me!

New Who In One Week!!

As a die-hard Whovian I mark my calendar by when the new seasons start and one week from today is the premiere of Season 7 of Doctor Who and the tearful farewell of the Ponds.  Amy and Rory have been a wonderful companion and juxtaposition to The Doctor's powers.  I'm sad to see them go, but excited for the wide-eyed innocence of the new companion.  Before we say goodbye to the Ponds during episode 5 (so the speculation says) there will be an online serial starting Monday through the remainder of the week entitled Pond Life.  So all you fellow Whovians, are you going to miss the Ponds?  And in all the history of Who, who's your favorite companion?  For me it was Donna.  Her and The Doctor had such an equal relationship, they were truly friends and I think she gave him the biggest run for his money, constantly keeping him on his toes.

To get you through the week, here's the latest trailer featuring bits from Season 7.  Catch the new season airing Sept 1st at 8 pm CST on BBC America!

A Great Wednesday Tidbit Courtesy of Doctor Who

It's been one of those weeks...constantly running from here to there, certain family members I'd love to disown, and an all-around annoyance with everything.  So thank heavens that I stumbled across a sneak peek of the upcoming new season of my beloved Doctor Who.  It's totally made my week.  So here's what put a smile on my face.....

New Christmas Day Doctor Who Trailer...

As a huge Doctor Who fan Christmas Day means more than stockings, turkey with all the trimmings, and opening presents.  It means a brand new Doctor Who Christmas-themed episode.  This year's episode is based on The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and sends our Doctor back in time to help a widow and her two children during the war.  Here's a new clip from the episode to get us even more excited.  Merry Christmas to us!  It will air Christmas Day at 9/8c on BBC America!

As you all know, I'm a huge fan of Doctor Who.  And the Christmas episode they air every year is a great way to celebrate the holiday and the perfect gift to us fans.  This year's episode is entitled "The Doctor, the Widow, and the Wardrobe" and would make C.S. Lewis proud.  Here's the awesome clip.....

Season Finale of Doctor Who Is Tonight.....

...and I can feel the tears starting already.  This season has been leading up to The Doctor's death and with each episode he's pulled further and further away from those who care for him as his emotions have become more resigned to his date with death.  Tonight's finale is entitled "The Wedding of River Song" and it's she who's been forced into bringing about the downfall of The Doctor.  This season's acting has been exceptional as has been seeing the evolving connection between The Doctor and River Song.  Below are some clips from tonight's episode as well as overview clips of the whole season.  So my fellow Whovians, get excited with me and sound off below!

Prequel to tonight's episode

Recap of the first half of the season

Now don't forget the annual Christmas special either.  Details have been released and this is the storyline planned for us Whovians....

Production has now started on the festive special, penned by showrunner Steven Moffat, which will see Matt Smith's Doctor embark on a magical and mysterious adventure in World War II-torn England with a young widow and her two children.

The story will see Madge Arwell and her two children, Lily and Cyril, evacuated to Dorset, where they meet a "mysterious young man in a bow tie, and a big blue parcel is waiting for them under the tree. They are about to enter a magical new world and learn that a Time Lord never forgets his debts..."  Sounds perfect for the holiday in my opinion.

Doctor Who Return Date...

I hope you'll all bear with me while I squeal with delight.  Yes, my blog is mostly about books, but my other obsession is sci-fi television.  I know I'm not the only one who likes to get her geek on, so from time to time a random sci-fi post will sneak in.  And now is just such a time.

BBC America has just announced that The Doctor will return for the second half of its current season on August 27th at 8 pm CST.  The above video has me so excited with the return of some beloved characters and some very scary villains along with the introduction of some creepy new ones!  Thank you for letting me indulge in my fan-girl moment as I start the countdown for the return of The Doctor.

Mid-Season Doctor Who Finale

It's been a very good season thus far with some VERY unexpected twists.  The final few minutes from last week's episode 6 were especially gasp-worthy.  Tonight is the mid-season finale with more DW returning in the fall.  To get you excited about tonight's big show here's a clip....

Doesn't it look good?!  Oh so exciting seeing so many of the Doctor's friends and enemies.  I'm truly bummed though that the season was broken in half since there's such great momentum going through the episodes.  An intriguingly titled Let's Kill Hitler will be the start of the second-half of the current season which again, will be sometime late this fall.  The wait will be killing me I assure you!

The Countdown Begins....

As I've mentioned before, I'm a HUGE Doctor Who fan and one week from today a new season begins.  Woo-Hoo!  So to whet our appetites, here's another extended trailer for what's coming up for season 6...

I'm so very excited for the new season and am happy there will be more River Song since she's an awesome heroine.  Matt Smith is definitely getting comfortable playing the Doctor and I'm quite enjoying him.  He's no David Tennant, but then who is.  His two companions, Amy Pond and Rory are entertaining and their being married adds an interesting dynamic.  So let's get the countdown rolling.

New Who Coming Soon

In my ongoing mission to show you my favorite things, I'm proud to announce that the new season of Doctor Who will be returning to BBCAmerica on Saturday, April 23rd.  I have been a fan since watching the episodes on PBS as a child.  From the exotic British accents to the cool looking aliens, I became hooked and am still hooked today.  My favorite combination was David Tennant's 10th Doctor and Catherine Tate's Donna Noble, but truthfully, every Doctor and Companion have brought something unique to the show.  Below is a sneak peek at the new season which has me squealing with delight!

Any other Who fans out there?  Are you all as excited as I am?!  Sound off below and let the countdown begin!

Future Birthday Gift Idea........

Even though my birthday has come and gone, I want all my followers to be planning for next year.  As some of you know, or will soon know as I start talking about my favorite things more, I'm a sci-fi junkie.  With Doctor Who being one of my most favorite things, I stumbled across this cool new toy for your children based on the bad guys of Doctor Who--The Daleks.  I'm not quite sure we should be encouraging our youth to EX...TER....MINATE things, but it looks fun to drive around.  What do you think?

Looks pretty fun, doesn't it?
