I Must Confess….I’m In My 50s And LOVE Craig of the Creek……

Every now and again I tear myself away from reading to watch new-to-me tv series.  Over the last two weeks I've found a new series to love and become obsessed with...the animated cartoon, Craig of the Creek.  It's the kind of show I wish had been around when I was young, a show focused on diversity and acceptance.  It's the kind of show that will appeal to other young people while aiming the occasional joke at adults.  It's the whole package and charms me in the same way that Scooby Doo does, giving me a few hours of joy and nostalgia.  It also gives me hope that we can all find acceptance in a world growing increasingly polarized.

Craig of the Creek follows a young boy, Craig, and his two friends, Kelsey and JP, as they go on adventures within a world of untamed, kid-dominated wilderness in the creek.

Set mostly in the wilds of the creek behind their houses, Craig is a 10 year old African American boy with parents who applaud his imaginative nature and already have his (and his two sibling's futures) planned out.  The parents are caring, treat their kids with respect by talking through problems, and the multiple generations of parents depicted warmed my heart through the obvious love flowing between each married couple.  Craig's siblings are a delight too and their sibling banter was true to life as older brother Bernard frequently touted a superior attitude while being there for Craig when he needed him.  Youngest daughter Jessica was smart and sassy, often made me laugh with her tell it like it is nature, and was a wonderful (occasional) addition to the forays into the creek.

There's a sense of wonder in each episode, a feeling of hope, and that's due to the very diverse cast of characters.  JP is Craig's awkward friend, tall and gangly, and it's hinted that he's mentally challenged.  But his big, loving heart always makes me smile as do his many extraneous comments.  Another character whose inclusion I cheered for was Jackie, an athletic young man (with a killer throwing arm) who's deafness is seamlessly incorporated into the storyline courtesy of another young person acting as translator.  Many of the challenges of growing up are touched on throughout the series: figuring out your place in the world, figuring out your feelings for others (those of the same sex as well as the opposite sex), and the fear of growing up and losing your childhood wonder.  There’s also action and suspense as a battle for control of the creek ensued, expeditions to discover more areas of the creek were undertaken, and all of it surprisingly kept me on the edge of my seat.  Each episode ultimately leaves a lasting impression as it let me experience every emotion in the short span of 13 minutes...13 minutes of utter delight!  I'm sad to say though that it's recently been canceled and the beautifully diverse world it depicts will be lost to future generations of kids looking for unwavering acceptance.  The message it leaves behind though lives on and whenever possible I will continue to recommend this show to everyone who will listen!

Malcolm “Mac” Sterling has one goal: take over the family matchmaking business. His final obstacle? Host his family’s new dating show and prove he can help each contestant find true love. One catch. Mac’s meddling mother has approved a co-host, a so-called expert who seems impervious to his charms. Now he could lose everything, because if his co-host proves she’s the better matchmaker, he can say goodbye to his legacy.
Natalie “Gem” Hale never intended for her alter ego as an online dating expert to get her the opportunity of a lifetime—or for that opportunity to come with a co-host who’s as infuriating as he is tempting. But she didn’t get this far by backing down from a challenge. All she has to do is keep her secret identity a secret.
Except as sparks fly and the competition heats up, Mac realizes his co-host is hiding something. He’s just got to figure out what.

EXCERPT:

Natalie had enjoyed her day away from TV and cameras and most of all Malcolm. At least she tried to, but then yesterday afternoon she’d received the message that Brad wanted to see her in his office first thing in the morning.
Her immediate thought was that he’d found out she’d crashed Malcolm’s party for Melissa. She spent the rest of her evening rereading her contract to make sure she hadn’t done anything wrong. She was in the clear. No breach of contract that she could find. So Malcolm could just suck it.
Before walking through the door of the studio, she applied a fresh coat of lipstick and fluffed her hair. Gem would not lose this contract. Natalie’s life was circling the drain a bit, so Gem had to hold it together.
In reception, she didn’t even get a chance to sit and relax to gather her thoughts. Malcolm leaned against the wall and smiled when he saw her. She tried to forget the last time she’d seen him. She’d wanted to invite him up to her place.
She’d tried to convince herself it was the alcohol she’d consumed and the fact that he’d been nice to her, but looking at him now, she knew better.
“Good morning,” he said, tucking his phone back in his pocket.
Damn. Even his voice was smooth. First thing in the morning. Life wasn’t fair.
“Is it? A good morning?” she asked. “Did you think that by tattling on me to Brad you’d get rid of me? Think again. I read my contract.”
He angled his head slowly and narrowed his eyes. “Tattled on what exactly?”
“That I crashed your party. What else?” Nat’s stomach flipped. What else indeed?
Malcolm pushed away from the wall in a smooth, graceful motion and stepped closer. He made Nat nervous with the movement. But nervous in a good way, like anticipation, which was horrible.
“You believe your little spying session worried me? I have nothing to hide.” He took another step, putting him as close as they had been the other night outside the bar.
Nat locked her knees so she wouldn’t move. The problem was she wasn’t sure if she’d step away or toward him.
He lowered his head, his mouth close to her ear, and spoke quietly. “How about you? What are you hiding?”
A shiver skated down her spine. “Nothing,” she whispered. Then she swallowed hard.
“They’re ready for you,” the receptionist called. “Conference room one on the left.”
Nat stepped away from Malcolm. This had to stop. She didn’t know what game he was playing, but she didn’t want to be a part. At least that’s what she kept telling herself.
Malcolm turned and held out a hand for her to go first. As she passed, his hand landed on the small of her back, right at the curve of her ass, like it had the other night. The touch caused a hitch in her stride, and she glanced at him over her shoulder, going for a haughty look.
She wouldn’t let him know the warm brush of his fingers made her heart race.
“Problem?” he asked.
“Not at all.”
They arrived at the room and Malcolm reached around her to open the door.
“Are you always a gentleman?”
He lowered his head again and she braced for the sensation of his breath on her skin. “Not always.” He paused for a blink. “But I do always allow a woman to go first.”
Nat clenched her teeth. Her mind raced at the innuendo and all the ways he would be a gentleman and when he wouldn’t. She inhaled deeply and walked into the conference room.

Review for Scooby Apocalypse, Vol. 1 by Keith Giffen

Fred. Daphne. Velma. Shaggy. Scooby-Doo. Roaming the globe in their lime-green Mystery Machine, they've solved countless crimes and debunked dozens of sketchy supernatural shenanigans.
But what if the horror was real?
Something terrible has transformed our world, turning millions of people into mindless zombie hordes.
And only five people--well, four people and one mangy mutt--have the smarts, the skills and the sheer crazy courage to stare down doomsday.
Can these pesky kids and their canine companion--using every incredible contraption in their arsenal--defeat the evil that has overwhelmed planet Earth? We've got only one thing to say about that: ZOINKS!
From comics mastermind Jim Lee and the superstar creative team of Keith Giffen (JUSTICE LEAGUE 3001), J.M. DeMatteis (JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK) and Howard Porter (JLA) comes SCOOBY APOCALYPSE, a whole new spin on the most beloved paranormal investigators in history. Get ready to give Scooby Snacks a whole new meaning! SCOOBY APOCALYPSE VOLUME 1 collects issues #1-6.

********************

As a fan of Scooby Doo and the gang from their very first incarnation throughout their evolution from cheesy goodness to romantic and angsty situations, I've always found comfort in the essential foundation of four friends and a dog solving mysteries.  There was always a sense of homecoming in the subtle humor and villains that were easy to identify that made everything right in my world.

With this modern take on the Scooby Gang almost everything is turned upside down as this unlikely team races to save the world from a virus run amok.  These characters have little similarity to their past incarnations as they're edgier and angrier.  From the very start they're at odds with one another, suspicious of Velma, and reluctant to count on each other to find a cure to the human mutations running rampant.  This time around Daphne's no longer "danger-prone" but more of a kick-ass heroine full of suspicions trying to resurrect a journalism career that had her falling from grace.  Fred's still enamored with her though and protects her every step of the way though he's not as physically capable as her. Unfortunately he doesn't have traps to count on in times of need, but he has another quirk just as endearing.  Velma's still the "smart one" here but is weighed down by depression, insecurities, and a desire to leave her mark on the world.  She's lonely, doubts that anyone could be her friend, and her life-long isolation had my heart aching for her. Shaggy's still portrayed as a hipster but with a harder edge courtesy of multiple tattoos.  He's a kindhearted soul, good with dogs and an asset to the government's program to turn canines into vicious weapons.  From the very start Shaggy becomes Scooby's guardian angel as Scooby's seen as a failure, too tender-hearted to be a killer canine.  What he does have though is nanotech that enables him to talk (which gives fans a clever reasoning behind his lifetime of being able to talk) and has him becoming a vital member to this ragtag group's journey through the zombie apocalypse.  Even the Mystery Machine is back, albeit in a much more militarized way.  It all adds up to a delightfully nostalgic wink to the past while setting itself firmly in the here and now.

This graphic comic is visually appealing with its blend of a dark landscape and bloody and gory creatures of the night.  Daphne's still dressed in purple and is a warrior woman full of anger towards Velma that got a bit old after awhile.  Just when you thought she formed a tenuous friendship with Velma she would once again rage. Fred's a good guy who finds himself forming a bond with Shaggy as they're both goofy and charming and they luckily have Daphne there to protect them.  Everyone's ultimately lucky to have Scooby as he's smart, strong, and not afraid to fight those creatures looking to harm his newfound friends.  This comic's main theme of a mutated virus creating flesh-eating creatures is one we've seen before and is handled well here, keeping me on edge with danger coming from around every corner.  The mystery behind who dispensed the virus, and if there's a cure, hangs over the entire story and drives the gang on while ramping up the suspense.  The villainy is not only relegated to those who dispensed the virus though, but also to a character familiar to long-time fans which was a clever twist that had me smiling.  It further puts the gang in jeopardy at a time where their burgeoning friendships are on fragile footing.  All in all I found this a captivating read, visually stimulating, with a modern storyline that kept me furiously turning the pages and desperate for more as readers are left hanging after a jaw-dropping reveal.

My rating for this is a B+/A-

Sci-Fi Celebration With Doctor Who & Battlestar Galactica (Review)

As a huge sci-fi fan I'm excited to give you a glimpse of two graphic novels based on two of my favorite tv shows.  Keep reading to get my impressions of Doctor Who: The American Adventures by Justin Richards and Battlestar Galactica: Six by J.T, Krul, then try them out for yourselves.

DOCTOR WHO: THE AMERICAN ADVENTURES BY JUSTIN RICHARDS
When it comes to the world of Doctor Who it's all about the Doctor.  It's his personality, idiosyncrasies, and temperament that set him apart from his predecessors and plays the biggest role in my enjoyment of each new regeneration.  In this collection it's the depiction of the Doctor that causes these stories to fall a bit flat, despite one or two having entertaining storylines, and which left me a bit disappointed.
The Twelfth Doctor's seriousness blended with a bit of arrogance was nowhere to be seen as the story's overall interpretations were a bit too generic.  If Number Twelve wasn't on the cover I wouldn't have known he was the one featured.  A few of the stories ended far too quickly as well as being wrapped up far too easily.  When the Doctor goes against a villain you expect it to be full of fireworks, but in two of the stories all it took was a shove.  Stories that conclude but still leave you thinking mark the best kinds of sci-fi, but here conclusions were wrapped up with a big bow in ways too quickly and cleanly.
There was some good here though, especially when it came to the graphics themselves.  Twelve was nicely depicted, and as his personality was so generic, the well-done likeness reminded readers of who was in charge.  The villains chosen were clever and harken back to the early years of Who to bring a bit of nostalgia to this collection.
On a whole, this was an entertaining read that could have been better.  It held my attention but had me knit-picking quite a bit.  While I found this entertaining, and some other Whovians might also find something to like, I think that the overall storylines skew to a younger crowd as none of the tales inspired too big of chills.

My rating for this is a C+

*I got this book from NetGalley for review in exchange for my honest opinion.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: SIX BY J.T. KRUL
As a fan of the cheesy original, and of the re-imagined version on SyFy, I was looking forward to reading this origins story as Six was a very complex character on television screens.  From the moment readers see the cover of this collection, they'll be confused as to who this story really is about as it doesn't exactly look like Six.  Add in a choppy narrative and visual depictions of other beloved characters that look nothing like readers expect and there's a lot of disappointment.
Overall, while I applaud the attempt to do something new in the BSG world, this fell flat for me.

My rating for this is a D.

The Walking Dead Returns Tonight!!!!

As a huge fan of The Walking Dead I've had this date marked on my calendar for months......and now it's here!  Tonight at 8pm CST on AMC this pulse-pounding show returns for another season of gore and intense drama with life or death situations around every corner.  This season promises more death and a traitor or two amongst the group to create even more danger for our ragtag group of survivors.

As I've mentioned throughout cyberspace I'm particularly fond of reluctant hero Daryl (or Dirty Daryl as I call him since he's usually sweaty while flexing his muscles and firing his beloved crossbow) who's portrayed by the amazingly charismatic Norman Reedus.  I've enjoyed his journey from bad boy to the soft-spoken savior everyone looks up to.  If I had to survive during a zombie apocalypse I'd definitely want him by my side!

So, my fellow zombie-addicts, here's to another exciting season of watching and waiting to see who gets munched on next......and to watching my sexy and sweaty Dirty Daryl!  What, or who, are you looking forward to seeing this season?

*I had great videos up but YouTube isn't loading them for me soooooo......We'll just chat instead.....

The New TV Season Is Almost Here.....

After a summer of virtually no exciting television (except for True Blood, which was off the rails this season and not necessarily in a good way.....though I must give an extra special Woo to the Hoo to Aleksander Saarsgard's full frontal exhibition), it's almost time for the return of some of my favorite shows.  Here are just a few of my favorites.......

The Walking Dead is back on Oct 13th and I can't wait to again see my Dirty Daryl and his crossbow.  All that dirt and sweat hides a heart of gold and considering how deadly the new season promises to be he might shed a half a tear or two for all the loss.  Michonne continues to be her badass self and I'm lovin' the addition of her steed, although I can't help but think that the horse is going to be quite an enticement to the Walkers as a meal.

Sons of Anarchy returns on Sept 10 and the craziness continues with BOTH Tara and Clay in jail.  Jax has lost his second-in-command with Bobby stepping down after Jax's machinations last season and I'm not sure who would be a good choice to replace him.  Juice continues to have his life on the line as he's still being used to bring the club down and I can't see his friendship with Chibbs continuing for much longer because of it.  Gemma continues to be Gemma which means lots of Queen Bitchiness.

The Winchester boys return on Oct 8 for season 9 (!) of Supernatural and they're still going strong.  Angels have fallen and the AWESOME Bobby is returning (though I have no idea how) so things are just as crazy as ever but as long as Dean continues to bring the sexy then I'm one happy girl.

The first season of Arrow was wonderfully entertaining with the super sexy Stephen Amell in the lead.  John Barrowman is equally impressive in his bad guy roll and all the intrigue returns on Oct 9.

So there's just a few of my returning faves.  What about you?  What shows are you looking forward to watching this season?

A Sad Weekend for Whovians........

Doctor Who fans worldwide went into mourning yesterday as it was announced that Matt Smith, the number 11 Doctor, will be leaving the show at the end of the year.  I will always be a fangirl of David Tennant (Doctor #10) but Matt Smith stepped into some really big shoes and made the part his own.  I enjoyed his comedic and emotional sides as each fought for dominance throughout each episode and ultimately I looked forward to his expressive face each week.

The search now commences for an actor to take over what can be considered a career-defining role.  Anybody have any actors they'd like to see in the role?  Here are some of my choices (yes, some are REALLY big wishes).......

Martin Freeman:

Was charismatic in The Hobbit and proves he's good at dealing with a mystery ala Sherlock and is currently working with Steven Moffatt on that show.

Aidan Turner:

Was wonderful in Being Human, showing a wide range of emotions amidst different time periods.  He's smolderingly sexy with a to die for Irish accent....and isn't it time for an Irish Doctor?

Richard Armitage:

Extremely charismatic with a huge fan following already. Suave and debonair and as seen in The Hobbit he's more than capable in action scenes.

Benedict Cumberbatch:

Is a commanding presence in Steven Moffat's Sherlock and shows he can be a leader.  Can show a bloodthirsty, yet Shakespearean side, as seen in the recent Star Trek movie.  That movie also shows someone who can deal with the intricacies of sci-fi along with coping with a rabid fan base.

Robert Downey Jr:

My biggest wish.....He has a proven ability to mix humor with action. Very expressive with his facial expressions and agile when it comes to action scenes.  Is extremely charismatic and the public utterly loves him!  Also capable of dealing with a vocal fan base and has shown talent with both historical and contemporary settings.

So what do you think of my choices?  Can you see any of them as the next Doctor?  Sound off below and name some choices of your own as we eagerly await the announcement which should come by late this year......

Game of Thrones Returns Tonight!!!!!

As if last night's Doctor Who didn't make me giddy enough!  Tonight GoT returns to HBO and we return to war with the Starks, Lannisters, and Targaryens.  I wanted to post some videos (just like I wanted to last night) but for some odd reason Blogger and my iPad aren't playing nice.  So just envision the sexy Jon Snow and Rob Stark and join me in the countdown to tonight's premiere of GoT!!!!!

New Who Tonight!!!!!!!

After the tears finally stopped falling due to our fond farewell to the Pond's, I'm excited to welcome back Doctor Who tonight with his new Companion Clara (Jenna-Louise Coleman).  Ms. Coleman left me intrigued after her two previous visits to DW and I have high hopes that she'll make for a delightful Companion.  She's bubbly and her interactions with the Doctor (Matt Smith) previously were crackling with a slight sexual tension between the two.  He's more than met his match, that's for sure.  The synopsis of the next seven episodes sound amazing and I can't wait to see all the running.  What about you?  Are you excited for the return of Doctor Who?

New Tidbits from The Walking Dead

Last week I chatted about the upcoming season of Supernatural.  Today I'm focusing on another favorite show of mine, The Walking Dead.  I've never read the comic books, so everything that's been happening is new to me and constantly has me on the edge of my seat.  As we get closer to the premiere date more photos, trailers, and episode synopses are being released and getting us fans pumped up.  Below I've posted the newest trailer to be released as well as a behind-the-scenes look into the first few episodes (and how weird is it hearing the character of Rick speaking with his native British accent?).  To other fans out there, have you read the comics and are things differing in a good or bad way?  Also, who's your favorite character?  For me it's former bad boy, Daryl.  He's really become an integral part of the group and Rick's second-in-command and I like how he now puts others ahead of himself.  This group is more of a family to him than his scumbag brother Merle ever was and I don't look forward to the brothers being reunited and Merle mocking/ruining what Daryl has found.  Plus, to be superficial, there's something sexy about Daryl's dirty bad boy personality that calls to me.

So, to get us ready for the new season, here are some enticing visuals courtesy of AMC TV!  Be sure to tune in on Oct. 14th at 8PM CST on AMC for the gritty new season of The Walking Dead....

New Preview for Season 8 of Supernatural

I'm a big fan of Supernatural (and I know lots of you are too) so when I got online today and saw a newly released preview for the upcoming season 8 premiere I squealed like a schoolgirl.  I LOVE the connection between the Winchester boys and their tough yet caring personalities.  I'm definitely a Dean-girl but also enjoy Castiel.  With Dean's time in Purgatory, and Sam being left on his own for the last year, the new season promises to be full of emotional angst along with new secrets being revealed, as well as lots of sexy Dean time.  So I now present to you a preview for season 8!  Afterwards, don't forget to tune into the new season on Oct. 3rd at 8 pm CST......

New Who In One Week!!

As a die-hard Whovian I mark my calendar by when the new seasons start and one week from today is the premiere of Season 7 of Doctor Who and the tearful farewell of the Ponds.  Amy and Rory have been a wonderful companion and juxtaposition to The Doctor's powers.  I'm sad to see them go, but excited for the wide-eyed innocence of the new companion.  Before we say goodbye to the Ponds during episode 5 (so the speculation says) there will be an online serial starting Monday through the remainder of the week entitled Pond Life.  So all you fellow Whovians, are you going to miss the Ponds?  And in all the history of Who, who's your favorite companion?  For me it was Donna.  Her and The Doctor had such an equal relationship, they were truly friends and I think she gave him the biggest run for his money, constantly keeping him on his toes.

To get you through the week, here's the latest trailer featuring bits from Season 7.  Catch the new season airing Sept 1st at 8 pm CST on BBC America!

2012 Comic-Con Brings Teasers From My Favorite Shows

One of the items on my Bucket List is to one day go to San Diego's Comic-Con, that wildly entertaining celebrity-laden geektastic festival that brings fans closer to their favorite tv shows and movies.  It started out as a sci-fi mecca and has now evolved into the hottest ticket in town this time every year.  Today I came across teasers for the new seasons of a few of my favorite shows.  First up......Spartacus!!!!!

This is the final season for this amazing show and I could cry just thinking about it!  All those sweaty and sexy men with their battle-scarred bodies.......WHEW!...Sorry for getting carried away.  Anyhoo, here's a teaser for the final season (with a few glimpses of my obsession, Dan Feuerriegel-who plays Agron) with some blood and guts and some flashes of skin.  I'll miss you Sparty, but will relish these final episodes!

Another favorite is The Walking Dead that keeps you on the edge of your seat with memorable characters and life or death moments.  I love how this show doesn't shy away from killing off popular characters and look forward to the new season and seeing more Michonne and the new dangers associated with the prison.

True Blood has been rockin' good so far this season!  Love the buddying up of Eric and Bill and anytime I can see Alcide without a shirt on makes for a good episode.  The changes to Tara and more screen time for Pam are especially welcome events.  Here now is a clip showing what to expect from the rest of this season.

That's all the tv goodness for now.  When I find more juicy tidbits I'll share them here.  In the meantime, if anyone's ever gone to Comic-Con please share your stories below so I can live vicariously through your words.

One Tree Hill Coming to an End

After 9 seasons all the tears, drama, and romance are coming to an end when OTH airs its series finale tomorrow night.  I was lucky enough to be given some props from the show which are really cool.  I got a pom pom in the team's colors and a mini banner for the car with the high school's logo emblazoned on it.  Every time I look at these items I think back to my own high school years and how much simpler it all was.  Trust me, my life was nowhere near dramatic as OTH.  So join me in reminiscing one last time by going to the show's website at http://www.cwtv.com/shows/one-tree-hill and catch up on all the previous seasons as well as special clips for the finale.

Catch the SERIES FINALE of OTH Wednesday, April 4th at 8/7 c on the CW!

Game of Thrones Returns Tonight!

Moobs may be gone, but the show, and Daenerys, must go on!  Tonight on HBO George R.R. Martin's masterpiece Game of Thrones returns!  And after the amazing season finale of Spartacus:Vengeance I'm glad that the blood and drama isn't ending yet.  Here is a description of tonight's premiere episode: Tyrion arrives in King's Landing to counsel Joffrey; Stannis Baratheon plots an invasion to claim his late brother's throne; Daenerys and her three dragons search for allies and water; Bran presides over a threadbare Winterfell.  Here now are some clips to get you excited for tonight's premiere....

Are you excited yet?!  I know I am.  So, join me in welcoming back Game of Thrones and tune into HBO at 9/8 PM CST.

A Great Wednesday Tidbit Courtesy of Doctor Who

It's been one of those weeks...constantly running from here to there, certain family members I'd love to disown, and an all-around annoyance with everything.  So thank heavens that I stumbled across a sneak peek of the upcoming new season of my beloved Doctor Who.  It's totally made my week.  So here's what put a smile on my face.....

Mad Men Returns TONIGHT!!!!

It's been a LLLOOONNNGGG wait, but the wait is finally over and one of my favorite shows is returning tonight on AMC TV!  I've missed this highly dramatic and emotional show with its memorable characters and cool vibe and am welcoming back Don Draper and Company with open arms (I personally have a bit of a crush on the character of Ken Cosgrove, but don't tell him)!  For those that want a quick recap in preparation for tonight, here's a helpful video......

So join me in doing a little happy dance and then tune in tonight on AMC TV at 9/8 PM CST!
