Two Worlds Two Men is a time travel romance about a woman, Jocelyn Stewart, who finds loveable traits in two men who are almost opposite personalities. Colin, the clan leader, offers Jocelyn strength, tradition, and protection in a brutal medieval world. Neely, the present day innkeeper, offers Jocelyn fun, companionship and hope that she has found her true soul mate. Neither choice, nor man, is necessarily lacking. They are just very different. It is simply a perspective and I wanted the readers to feel that.
I also hoped to convey the characters emotions so that the reader could relate with empathy. For example, Neely was faced with the knowledge that Jocelyn was in love and sleeping with Colin in another world. I felt having Neely respond with anger and a sense of helplessness was what any man would feel if he was faced with those circumstances. Hence, the character responded with those emotions. Neely also had other scenes where he took off by himself in order to process the doubt and jealously. We all occasionally need space or a quiet place to process our thoughts when we are faced with conflict and as people we can appreciate that.
I also wanted the banter between the characters to grab readers, especially humor. To me, men are just funny! They like to play with words and wit. Neely, who is a present day man, is very vocal with his wit and snide comments because we have as a society become more open with our feelings. However, Colin is from medieval Scotland and propriety did not allow a person, especially a man, to relay emotion publically. That is why the laughing scene in the castle with Jocelyn and Colin is so dear to me! In that scene Colin is himself, a man, not the menacing clan leader he must uphold for the world. The laughing, bordering on hysterics, between he and Jocelyn would never have been relayed outside the privacy of the castle doors. And it’s those precious moments between men and women where we let our guard down and show ourselves vulnerable that I hoped to make the reader relate to.
As a writer I have so much yet to learn. Still, I hope Two Worlds Two Men entertains readers and brings a few laughs as well. Regardless of which man you secretly root for, both Colin and Neely bring many of the attributes that we know and love about men in all their varying personalities. And that is why I hope others enjoy reading Two Worlds Two Men as much as I did creating it.
EXCERPT:
Jocelyn looked around for the driver who was supposed to be waiting for her arrival with a sign. She had hired someone to pick her up because, as an American and first-time visitor to Scotland, she had figured it would be less stressful.
She didn’t see the driver anywhere; then, just as she started feeling nervous, she saw a man holding a sign with her name on it. And what a man he was! He was broad shouldered, strong and had dark brown hair with reddish tints. He exuded masculinity like some cologne, and even across the airport, she thought she could smell it. Smoothing her unruly hair, she started to walk over to him.
The man, seeing her approach him, took a step toward her. “Are you, Jocelyn?”
When he spoke her name, she found herself frozen in place unable to respond. She’d heard this voice before; she knew this voice. This man spoke her name exactly like the dream she had had all those years ago! She had been stirred awake in bed by a voice of a man, who spoke her name with a Scottish accent. His voice was gentle and low; as if he wanted to gain her attention, but not cause her alarm. Jocelyn had clutched the sheets to her chest and stared out into the darkness of her bedroom almost feeling his intimate presence beside her. She lifted her hand up to her ear having sworn his warm breath had brushed her skin. Jocelyn remembered she had turned her head, anxiously, toward the pillow next to her and almost thought she would be looking into the eyes of a stranger; yet she had not been frightened. This man, his voice, somehow comforted her.
Now, she stood in the airport and caught her breath as she faced the man before her. Her eyes searched his face for something; though what it was she wasn’t sure. Jocelyn felt her heart beating so fast she was certain the man could hear it as memories flooded her mind of that night so long ago when he or someone spoke her name in the darkness. Was that the reason for her vacation to Scotland? Was she unconsciously trying to find the man?
