The theme of friends to lovers is a favorite of mine and fuels this upcoming story of a school reunion that sets two friends on an unexpected path to HEA.  Keep reading to get a tempting taste of Shoulda by Pepper North, along with getting my impressions of it, then add this second installment in the A Second Chance at Mr Right series to your bookshelf!

Fake relationships happen all the time at reunions, right?

Harper has adored Colt since the first day of third grade. The talented athlete shoulda avoided his chubby, academically-challenged classmate, but somehow they've always been the best of friends. As they grew up together, Harper hid her deeper feelings for her best friend, knowing there was no way the handsome hunk felt the same way.

Colt's friends have always meant everything to him. In high school, he wanted to be more than friends with Harper, but she kept him at arm's length. Pouring his heart and soul into his music, Colt headed for Nashville after Harper's rejection, but when she calls to ask him to pose as her boyfriend at their upcoming reunion, wild horses couldn't keep him away.

For some, there is a second chance at having Mr. Right. Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda explores a world of connections that can't exist...until they do. Forbidden love abounds when these Daddy Doms refuse to live with regret and claim the women who own their hearts.

BUY here.

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

Harper Bensen and Colt Ziegler have been part of each other's lives since they were young, drawn to each other by feelings they were just starting to understand and held back from acting on.  For Harper, issues regarding her size and her hesitancy in standing up for herself has kept her from admitting there's more to her friendship with Colt.  She doesn't think a popular and successful country singer like him would want to be with her and has let others fuel those thoughts.  For Colt, his thoughts regarding Harper have always been of an erotic nature and he never thought she was ready for him to claim her...so he's held back for years, laughed at by his bandmates for never inviting groupies backstage.  With their upcoming high school reunion, and a moment of subtle revenge, things will change dramatically for them though if he can just get her to see herself the way that he does.  Their reunion ultimately becomes a slow-burn of him building up her self-worth through words and actions, a steamy journey full of heart and soul.

This was a quick read, a sensual read that brought two friends together in an erotically-charged web.  The overall story had a familiar feel, with a stereotypical high school villain (still being nasty), and the seamless inclusion of daddy kink.  Colt's a delicious hero who has no problem showing Harper how he feels.  I don't quite understand why he didn't return home before now, but better late than never.  Harper's a likable heroine with a big and caring heart, someone who always wants to help and see the best in others.  Her self-esteem is low though, leaving her open to being kicked around, which left me frustrated by her at times as I desperately wanted her to stand up for herself. Despite these few quibbles I still found this an entertaining read and a nice addition to Pepper North's steamy series.

My rating for this is a B-

Book Release Blast for Hero in Waiting by Shelby Flynn (REVIEW)…..

When a country music star crashes into the calm and controlled life of a rancher things will never be the same, for either of them, as what they thought they wanted turns out to be very different.  Keep reading to get a tempting taste of Hero in Waiting by Shelby Flynn, along with my impressions of it, then add this first installment in the Southern Rogues series to your bookshelf!

Avery Dawson thought she had it all figured out. A music career, a tour, and the entire world at her feet. Then her bus crashed on a deserted road and she found herself stuck...and in need of a hero.
When Jackson Pole stopped to help the country star trapped in the bus, he thought he was doing a good deed. But the next day, with Avery staying in his house and her fingerprints all over everything, he has one very disturbing realization: Now that she was here, she was going to change everything.
Life in his small town in North Carolina, on the ranch he worked so hard to buy, has always been more than enough for him. He never wanted anything more, and he certainly never wanted a woman. Especially a high-profile, high-maintenance one like Avery.
But when she leaves, intent on starting her tour and moving on from the disastrous week she spent waiting for her bus to be repaired, it turns out he was wrong.
He does need a woman. And only one woman will do: the one that just left him.

BUY AT AMAZON here.

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

With its Hallmark Channel feel this book will entertain readers from start to finish while warming their hearts as its small town boy finds an unexpected attraction to the country singer who's more than what she seems.  These two apparent opposites grow close in the short time they're together in sensual and sweet exchanges.  But just when they realize what they mean to each other, outside forces intervene leading to a rocky and hard-fought road to HEA.

This is a good read, a solid read that's also a satisfying series starter. There's much about it that's familiar though, much that's comfortable, and because of that it's a nice summer read to relax with while sitting in the sun.

My rating for this book is a B+

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THIS BOOK:

As a fan of music-themed romances I just gobble up each new release.  This third installment in the Music City Lovers series is no exception and with each turn of the page I fell even more in love with this couple.  Theirs was a journey that warmed my heart, a journey that had me cheering them on to defy the odds.

Kade Tucker is the man every woman wants and is the man every other man wants to be.  The public sees him as a playboy, flitting from one woman to another, but the truth is that Kade loves love.  He believes in it wholeheartedly but has been unlucky in it.  Seeing his brothers find their HEAs has him longing for his own, but after a slew of failed relationships he’s taking a break.  Fate’s funny though and it’s at that moment that he finds the woman of his dreams…now, he just needs to convince her of it!  Kade’s a delicious hero with a big, loving, heart.  The moment he comes to Stella’s rescue is the moment he knows he’s found “the one” and slowly but surely sets out to claim her in a sweet and sizzling journey full of heart and soul.

Stella Bell comes from a loving family, a family who wants only the best for her.  What they want for her though isn’t what she wants…and after years of trying to live up to their plans for her, she hits the road to finally make a life for herself.  Meeting a famous musician isn’t what she planned for herself, but he ends up being perfect for her in a bumpy, yet heartwarming journey to HEA.  Stella’s an immensely appealing heroine, young and ready to take on the world after feeling held back for years.  Though she’s leery of his fame, and all the things surrounding that, she slowly takes a chance on love and together they deal with his crazy ex, her overly loving family, and the meshing of their different lives in a deliciously delightful journey to HEA.

From the first page to the last this was an entertaining book with a likable cast of characters.  It was a sweet yet sizzling journey of finding the one person meant for you and committing to them wholeheartedly.  Though I hadn’t read the previous books in this series I had no trouble immersing myself in this book.  The characters won me over from the start and had me rooting for them through the few hiccups thrown their way.  On a whole this was a well-crafted romance that has me excited for what Ms. Capulet has planned next!

My rating for this is an A.

A woman at the top of the country music world finds herself stuck working with a former love she's never forgotten about despite their years apart in this intensely emotional tale of second chances and family obligations.  Keep reading to get a tempting taste of Song for a Cowboy by Sasha Summers, then add it to your bookshelf.  In honor of this second installment in the Kings of Country series make sure to fill out the form below for the chance to win 1 of 5 copies of the first book in this series too!

Country star Emmy Lou King is singing the blues...
Emmy Lou King’s whole family is legendary in country music. When she lands the opportunity to sing the American Football League anthem and serve on one of the AFL’s anti-drug charities, she’s sure she can handle working with Brock Watson even though she’s barely recovered from their breakup—and she’s never loved anyone else.
Brock Watson is feeling the pressure. From dealing with his father’s declining health, keeping their ranch running, staying in game-ready shape, and his dedication to the charity that changed his life, there’s no time for anything else. Emmy Lou included. After six years, he’d like to think she couldn’t mess with his head anymore. But one look, one smile—and he knows she’s as dangerous as ever. He can’t resist her—he never could.
The more time Emmy Lou spends with Brock, the harder it is for them to keep their distance.

EXCERPT:

“Open, dammit!” Emmy Lou pushed the button again, smacking the pink-and-white polka-dot umbrella against her thigh. It still wouldn’t open. The sky rumbled overhead.
“Ooh, language, Emmy.” Her twin sister, Krystal, laughed. “Next you’ll be saying shit or ass or fu—”
“No, I won’t.” Emmy spoke into the mic on the earbuds she had plugged into her left ear, her sister still laughing. “But this might be a little easier if I wasn’t FaceTiming you right now.” Umbrella in one hand, phone in the other, she started walking.
Krystal held her phone closer, flipping her lower lip for a full-on pout. “But I miss you.”
“I miss you, too,” Emmy said, blinking raindrops from her lashes. “Enough to walk through a parking lot, in the rain, with an umbrella that won’t open, and keep talking to you.” She kept pressing the button on the handle, but it didn’t help. Of course, the rain was falling faster now, big, pelting drops.
“Where is Sawyer? Why isn’t our bulky, scowling bodyguard carrying a massive bulletproof umbrella over your head?” There was a hint of accusation in her sister’s voice.
“Be nice to Sawyer.” Emmy wiped the rain from her eyes. “He is picking up Travis down the road—because our brother ran out of gas.” She sighed, clicking the button on her umbrella again. “And I’m getting soaked because this thing is broken. I should hang up.” Emmy laughed, peering at the stadium through the rain. Rain that was getting heavier and faster.
“But you won’t.” Krystal leaned forward. “Then again...you are starting to look like a wet rat. Walk faster.”
Emmy stuck her tongue out at her sister, her steps quickening. She was sort of jogging now, weaving around the parked cars.
The squeal of brakes had her jumping a good ten feet in the air. A truck, going way too fast in a parking lot—in a torrential downpour—skidded to a stop mere inches from where she stood. It happened too fast for her to move. Too fast to do anything but curl in on herself, dropping her umbrella and holding her other hand, and phone, out to protect herself. Which, considering the vehicle was massive and she was not, didn’t make any sense but... it was instinctual. She braced herself on the truck hood, her knees knocking so hard there was a high likelihood she’d collapse onto the slick concrete at any moment.
“Holy shit,” Krystal was saying, the phone now facedown on the hood. “Emmy! Emmy? Can you hear me? Are you okay? Answer me.”
She could have been hit... Almost was. But wasn’t. Emmy flipped the phone over. “Here.” But she was gasping for breath. Her heart pumped madly, reaching what had to be the maximum beats per minute. “Fine.”
She was vaguely aware of the truck’s driver’s-side door opening wide, followed by rapid footsteps splashing in newly formed puddles. But she was still grappling with the whole near-death experience and couldn’t process the arrival of her almost assailant.
“Where is the driver? Are they getting out? Hold your phone up,” Krystal growled. “I want to see what this asshole has to say about nearly running you over.”
“Are you okay?” said the mountain of a man heading her way.
“I’m fine,” she answered, rubbing water from her eyes. Her hand shook. Her voice shook. But she was okay.
“You didn’t see me coming?” he asked, stepping closer. “My truck?”
“Seriously, Emmy Lou, hold up the phone,” Krystal snapped. “You couldn’t see her? In her bright- yellow-and-pink, daisy-covered raincoat. Because, honestly, she might as well be wrapped, head-to-toe, in reflective tape. Asshole.”
“Krystal,” Emmy whispered into the mic hanging from her earpiece.
“Hold up the phone. You might need a witness.” Krystal sighed. “Emmy Lou, I’m serious.”
Emmy held up the phone, unable to stop trembling.
The man came around the hood of the truck and stopped. His eyes widened and his mouth opened, but he didn’t say anything. Shock probably. Complete and total shock. Not just because he’d almost turned her into a smudge in the stadium parking lot, but because he was who he was and she was who she was and they were standing face-to-face...staring, at each other, in the rain...
“Brock?” Krystal sounded just as stunned. “Is that Brock? Is that you?”
No, there was no way that was possible. Emmy was not equipped for this. Not right now. Not in the least. She should be; it had been years. Years. This shouldn’t be a big deal. Seeing him, that is. Being almost run over by him—by anyone—was sort of a big deal.
“Hey.” Brock nodded, barely glancing at Emmy’s phone and Krystal. His gaze was pinned on her.
“I’m...” Her voice broke. She was what? “I...” No better. Just stop. Pull it together. This was silly. “Hi.” She forced a smile. “So...” She could do this. Talk. Breathe. In and out. Easier said than done.
His mouth opened, then closed and the muscle in his jaw clenched tight. The staring continued. He just stood there, rigid, wearing an odd expression on his face. A face that, all weirdness and near-death experiences aside, she knew well. All too well.
Adrenaline was kicking in now. Enough to get her moving, anyway. And that’s exactly what she was going to do. Move. Away. The sooner the better. “Okay.” She hung up her phone, shoved it into her pocket, and started walking—do not run—toward the stadium door. No looking back. Just moving forward.
Did she almost slip? Yes. Did she go down? No. Had she managed to save a shred of dignity? Probably not. She pulled the door wide, stopping just inside to scan the signs and arrows for the bathroom. Her phone started ringing. She didn’t have to look at it to know it was Krystal. She waited until she’d closed and locked the door on the family restroom before she answered.
“Emmy?” Krystal asked. “Are you okay?”
“I didn’t get hit—”
“I know, I know but...it was Brock.”
Yes. Brock. She shrugged out of her raincoat and sat in the chair placed next to the diaper-changing station. Her pulse was still way too fast, and her stomach was all twisted up. “I know.” Sitting wasn’t good. She stood, smoothing her pale blue blouse and staring down at her jeans. Her raincoat had left a perfect line midthigh. Above the line, slightly damp. Below the line, saturated. She wiggled her toes in her rain boots, water squishing.
“This sucks.” Krystal cleared her throat. “I wish I were there.”
“I do, too.” She stared at her reflection. “But I know what you’d do if you were here.”
“I’m not so sure.”
“You’d remind me that I already spent too many years and too many tears on him.” Which was true. Their breakup—rather, his sudden and complete disappearance from her life—had almost broken her. She’d cried until she was sick, and Krystal knew it, too. Krystal was the one who pushed her to get up, to keep going, every day. Krystal was the one who told her it was okay to be angry with him for deserting her without a word. And when Emmy Lou was more herself, Krystal had turned all the tears and sadness and anger into their double-platinum single “Your Loss.” “And you’d be right.”
“True.” Krystal paused. “But after I was done telling you all that, I’d get up in his face and chew him out for almost running you over. And that’s just to start.”
