LET'S GET TO KNOW MORE ABOUT MS. DEVERE....
TSP:  Knowing what you do now about the publishing business, would you have done anything different career-wise?
PJD:  Yes! A thousand times yes! Since publishing my first book, I have consumed many book marketing podcasts, read hundreds of articles, and attended book conferences. I had no idea how much I didn’t know. My advice to new authors is to take the time to seek out these resources before hitting the publish button. Luckily, I didn’t have to backtrack too much, but knowing how to set up the business on the first go-round is much easier than having to undo and redo it.
TSP:  Beyond its synopsis, what do you want us to know about Pour Attitude?
PJD:  Madeline Everly (Mads) is who I want to be when I grow up. She is a direct, no nonsense woman who does not take any crap off anyone, and I love her for it. Besides her boldness, she has a wild and free spirit. She has a perspective about life that most people are missing. She sees the importance of things the rest of us overlook, and she is passionate about what she wants.
TSP:  Of all the heroes you've written, who's the most heroic in your opinion?
PJD:  Henry Butler is a side character, but he is everything. He is Patrick and Jameson Butler’s father, and he becomes a father figure to most of my characters.
We learn that his wife left him with their twin sons when the boys were only two years old, and he raised them by himself. There is a story in Pour Choices where Patrick tells Dawson how he got in trouble for fighting at a young age as a result of him telling everyone his mother was dead and the other children calling him out on the lie. Patrick told her that instead of reprimanding him for lying, Henry packed them up and moved to Starkford so the boys could have a fresh start outside of their mother’s bad decisions.
Henry is slow to anger and even slower to judge, but he fiercely protects who he loves. He is my favorite hero.
TSP:  How has the digital revolution affected your career and how you market yourself? Do you have an eReader yourself?
PJD:  I have always produced eBooks and paperbacks, and I market both with a stronger focus on the eBook.
I have an eReader, and I prefer to read eBooks. With an eBook, no one can really tell what you’re doing unless they peek over your shoulder. When I’m waiting around at court, I can look like I’m reading an email or two when I’m really halfway through reading a sex scene so hot I have to be sure my eyeballs don’t pop out of my head.
The majority of romance readers prefer eBooks, and it’s probably because of the voraciousness in which we read. Our houses aren’t big enough to hold all the books we go through!
TSP:  My site's all about favorite things, so what are your favorite things/the things you can't live without?
PJD:  Books! I love to get lost in a good romance, and I don’t think I could live without them. I’m also a sucker for any comfort item: cozy pajamas, a bath pillow, blankets with a pocket for my feet, etc. Other than that, I’d have to say my passport. My husband and I love to go on adventures. Even though this pandemic has grounded us for a while, we have lots and lots of plans for future travels!

Madeline Everly wants to climb her muscular bartender like a mountain, but he seems opposed to the idea. After she starts working alongside him behind the bar, will he finally give into her?
When Madeline’s misogynistic boss, overbearing mother, and grudge holding sister become too much to bear, it’s time to let off a little steam. Mads has a wild streak, and she doesn’t apologize for it. She likes men, and she has her sights set on one in particular—Exel Kinley. If she can check him off her to-do list, maybe he won’t take up so much room in her head. As nothing in her life has ever been permanent, Mads has no problems going through men like she goes through gin and tonics at happy hour. Can she have the adventure she wants and the pleasure she craves, all from the same man?

EXCERPT:

Nate comes through the door next, but I’m the only one who notices. Everyone else is gathered around Bridget and Brynn, so I walk over to greet him.
“I didn’t think you’d show when we invited you, but I’m glad you came."
He wiggles his eyebrows at me as he opens his jacket to show the flask sticking out the top of the inside pocket. “I brought reinforcements."
I squeal in excitement like Brynn would before putting a hand on each side of his face. I bring him down to me and give him a playful kiss, right on the lips. “You are a good man!"
I notice his expression changes after what I thought was an innocent smooch. He makes a point to lick his lips. With a hand grabbing my hip, he brings his head down to whisper in my ear, “You have no idea how good I can be."
My eyes widen in shock. Where the hell did that come from? We’ve always played around, but the look in Nate’s eyes seems serious.

AUTHOR INFO:

P.J. DeVere is the author of The Starkford Series. She was born and raised in Mississippi, where she is still a practicing attorney. A life-long lover of books, P.J. finds it hard to tear herself away from a steamy romance novel. She’s had multiple careers in her life, but writing is by far her favorite. Before earning her law degree from Ole Miss, she was a fifth-grade teacher. She has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Mississippi State.
She is a wonderful wife, a terrible housekeeper, and a devoted mother. Her sons are all grown with lives of their own, and she is making use of this newfound time and freedom to get to know the imaginary friends in her head. She is giving readers a distinctly different view of life in the South as not everyone down here spits tobacco through a missing tooth hole or says “I declare” while lazily fanning herself under a magnolia tree. P.J. has found joy in creating a series of novels that reflects the Mississippi she knows and loves, and she hopes her readers will find the lure of returning to Starkford as irresistible as she does.
